What did we do 5 years ago?shaschboy said:I mean, didn't we do this 5 years ago? Please tell me what I'm missing. He's coached at Buffalo for crying out loud. Please, again, tell me what I'm missing.
That is what I was trying to get him to admit. If that is a case he is obviously a racist hick and doesn't warrant the discussion.BriantheDawg said:and that we should stay away from Gill because of his race? If so, I'm speechless. The guy turned the absolute WORST Division I team around in 2 years. He can obviously coach. If you were implying something else, then nevermind.

Why is that? He has proven he can win as a HC. Why would you be done?dawgfan77 said:BriantheDawg said:and that we should stay away from Gill because of his race? If so, I'm speechless. If we hire Gill I am done with MSU football, not that any of you care. DONE

Furthermore, it became clear to me the majority of Croom haters on this board - which pretty much is this board - did so based on his record and measurable qualities, which, really is the highest example of equality. It didn't matter that Croom was black. He was subject to the same critique as any white coach would have been. Which is an acheivement in and of itself.
For this thread in particular, Turner Gill has turned around perhaps the most historically ****** program of them all. His name should be considered based on that alone. Is it the best we can do? Maybe not, but he will get a chance at the bigtime, and my guess is he will kill.
Every head football coaching hire is an experiment. Every one.
every team he beat this year had a losing record except 1 who was 6-6. The teams they beat went a combined 30-53. And they also lost to a 4-8 kent st. team. Despite how bad Buffalo use to be, that's just not that impressive to me. I would rather have Dooley than Gill. At least Dooley has some SEC experience. Gill may turn out to be an outstanding coach, but the only thing he has shown me right now is that he can beat bad football teams. Why is that? He has proven he can win as a HC. Why would you be done?
Find me a Division I team that won fewer games than Buffalo during that time span and I'll condede the point. Until then, Buffalo is the hardest place to win in Divison I-A. People used to say that winning games at little Youngstown State didn't qualify Jim Tressell to coach at Ohio State either. Seems to have worked out OK for them with 1 national title and 2 other championship game appearances.Dawg in a pile said:Actually I would say it's hardly that impressive. He might turn out to actually be a good coach. But winning some games at "absolutely the hardest place to win in Division I-A (your opinion) does not qualify him to come be a head coach in the SEC. He's going to need to go somewhere else first. I'm sure there are other coaches that have done just as much as he has in crap conferences also.
