A solid offensive line. That's why I think he succeeds in changing the way the MSU QB is viewed. He may not be a first rounder, but he'll be a successful QB who wins some games and puts up some yards. <div>
</div><div>We have no seniors on the offensive line this year, but at the same time, most of them got experience playing last year. We all know that experience key to the effectiveness of the offense at schools like MSU. We'll struggle a little bit this year, but the talent is there. Day, Smith and Jackson are solid. A slew of 2nd and 3rd year in the program type players to take the other spot, along with two solid JUCOs, one of which has already just about nailed down a starting position. An emerging diamond in the rough in Justin Malone.</div><div>
</div><div>Then, every single one of them will be back next season, along with the running backs. Hopefully, the senior receivers can even out the maturing process of the OL this year and then vice versa the following year when younger, but talented receivers take over like Morrow, Lewis, Johnson, etc.</div><div>
</div><div>Think back at the last few QBs that we thought would be the next big thing:</div><div>
</div><div>1) Relf: He wasn't that great, played better behind the line in '10, regressed back to true form behind a younger line in '11.</div><div>2) Fant: We don't need to talk about the horrific lines he played behind.</div><div>3) Madkin: The lines that did Fant in did Madkin in his Sr. year.</div><div>4) Taite: When the dozers from '94 left, so did his efficiency.</div><div>
</div><div>Just my opinion after reading the CL article this morning and getting fired up. I know the haters and rebels will say, "well the offensive line sucked this year and you lost 2 seniors lolol11111!" and I acknowledge that. But we also have a wealth of experience coming back that is now a year older. Clausell is now a year older and stronger. Day established himself. We aren't counting on completely new faces....just sophomores who were freshmen last year. Plus two stud JUCOs.</div><div>
</div><div>Simply put, Mullen has been stockpiling OL depth starting with the 2010 signing class, and I think we start to see the benefits this year. Robinson, Muniz, Clausell, Lawson, Day....those guys are about ready to take over. The 2 classes since then have had at least 4 OL in them. The future of the OL is bright, even if they do have some bumps next year.

I was not under the impression the offensive line looked too damn good. From what I read in the first few practices, it was actually going to be another major problem this year. Reading the scrimmage notes, it sounded like the 1st team D got to the quarterback with ease multiple times to the point that the coaches finally stopped calling the play dead just to see what Tyler could do if given time.

Maybe I have read all this wrong but it sounds to me like this O-line is going to have its hands full again this year and they better get the ice ready for Tyler after the games.

that will also be the year that we lose our experienced secondary and WR's. We should still be solid at D-line next year, but we really needed the O-line to be good THIS year in order to have the potential for a special season. I really feel like with a solid O-line we could be a 9 win team or better this year(based on the experience and depth at other key positions)....but from early practice reports I'm not thinking we are going to have that.

But I agree, I wouldn't exactly call our OL a strength right now. I do think it will be better than last year though. Where I really think Tyler Russell has the advantage over a lot of other semi-hyped QBs we've signed is that he hasn't had to be the man until his redshirt JR season.

I'm probably being a little bit overly positive. At the very minimum, I expect this OL to stand tall and dominate against the OOC patsies, UK, Ole Miss types. So we're really only asking them to rise above in 2 or 3 more games. Who knows what can happen.<div>
</div><div>Also, our DL is going to be pretty damn good. So the OL is seeing a solid SEC type competition every day in practice.</div>

We dont have 2 juco studs- we have one. Siddoway will be a good player for us at RT. Clausell has improved and is alot more ready to play LT. Day is going to be a good Center- he is just plain mean, He will have a juco backing him up, so that's a plus to have an experienced back-up. We'll be pretty good at Guard with Jackson and Smith if Tobias can stay healthy. Also, the longer Tobias stays healthy, the more game experience Malone can get so he can get ready to play meaningful snaps.

Damien Robinson gives us a solid back-up at OT...Malone at G, and Holley at Center. So we should be ok with having 8 guys that can play.

Goat is obviously on his happy pills today- we will be improved over last year, but we wont be great on the OL. But I do agree with him that 2013's OL could be really good.

and has some depth...and Russell being able to mature and grow will do nothing but help him this season. He is ready to get out there now and play SEC football

But we will still take our lumps, particularly Clausell. He is improved from last year but not yet there. If we can dodge the injury bug here we should have a decent line by the end of the year. A lot of Tyler and Daks completions in scrimmage would be sacks when the qb is live. All that said, if 1 group could overachieve we need it to be the OL. Could be the difference in 6-9 regular season wins
