Is it safe to say that Tyler's play dropped when he took that helmet-to-helmet contact when he was trying to slide? The refs considered a personal foul, but then decided against it. It seemed to me that contact was more violent than the helmet-to-knee that put him out of the game.

I wouldnt be surprised if he got a concussion on that play. He was not the same after that. Having said that, TR last year was Hot and Cold.

Yep the hit on the first or second series was a penalty. I believe they waved it off because they did not want to eject the player. A QB sliding feet first is a defenseless player by definition. The rule is called targeting of a defenseless player with the crown of the helmet or with any part of the body above the shoulders. That was by definition a penalty. My second issue that I think the NCAA is going to have to address is the OL of these fast paced teams being set before the ball is snapped. It did not happen all the time. Third, OSU was holding on the corners on almost every play. This did not affect our poor offensive play, but did score them the second touchdown.
Yeah, it's something that they really needed to work out more. When you have a really harsh penalty for a particularly call, it seems obvious to me that it's going to affect the way refs make that call.
It makes me think that maybe the rule makers get so focused on assuming that the threat of an automatic ejection is such a great deterrent that they never actually consider that it increases the chances that guys get away with nasty hits when they are made.
Unrelated to the topic at hand, but I found myself thinking a couple of times when we got really decent calls ourselves that these non-SEC refs didn't understand how calling a MSU game worked against a favored opponent. They were all measuring for close first downs and not giving them and calling back unearned touchdowns. It was crazy.

The hit that put Tyler out looked more like a hit that would aggravate an existing head injury than cause one. That`s why I asked below if he had been hurt this past spring or in August camp. At any rate I hope he`s OK and can come back soon. I still think if Mullen would get his head out of his *** he could make Russell and Prescott a hell of a two headed monster to prepare for.

That was a total BS no call. Tyler was sliding and he got helmet to helmet....
Contact. Minimum personal foul 15 yd penalty if not the targeting ejection penalty. That was a huge play against us and could've led to the later hit that put Tyler out. He may have already had his bell rung from the first hit

I didn't think that first hit to the head truly deserved a flag. I did not think the OSU player did anything egregious. If it had been a State player, we would have been pissed had he been ejected.
Now, there were multiple times where an OSU lineman was not set for one second prior to the snap. Deserved many penalties yet none were called.

Plus the defender lowered his head to make the hit. He didn't lead with the shoulder. They missed that call.

The new rule would have made it an ejection if they called it because it was above the shoulders on a defenseless player. Calling just helmet-to-helmet in that scenario wouldn't work anymore, unless a sliding QB is not defenseless.
So instead of getting the personal foul call we got nothing. They didn't want to have to eject him. I believe the on field guys can say they don't want the ejection but then it goes to replay and a decision for ejection or not has to come from the booth.

I am definitely not taking up for our offensive (non) strategy but Tyler did not
seem the same after that hit to the head.
You can bet your sweet *** if it had been our guy doing that to an OSU QB they would have been ejected without fuss.
