I am wondering if we didn't get that call because of the new targeting rule resulting in automatic ejection. I seriously think that was the issue.
Yeah, it's something that they really needed to work out more. When you have a really harsh penalty for a particularly call, it seems obvious to me that it's going to affect the way refs make that call.
It makes me think that maybe the rule makers get so focused on assuming that the threat of an automatic ejection is such a great deterrent that they never actually consider that it increases the chances that guys get away with nasty hits when they are made.
Unrelated to the topic at hand, but I found myself thinking a couple of times when we got really decent calls ourselves that these non-SEC refs didn't understand how calling a MSU game worked against a favored opponent. They were all measuring for close first downs and not giving them and calling back unearned touchdowns. It was crazy.
