and the Arkansas tandem down a few and it may be right on.

Hell, the SEC QB class after Tebow and Snead sucks. Good time for Russell to make a name for himself.

There are two legitimate stars, then a bunch of nobodies. Even still, that idiot is the biggest homer in the world to think that Arkansas's QBs are 3rd best in the conference. He (and a lot of Hog fans) is going to be in for a big surprise this fall.

Also, John Parker Wilson wasn't nearly as bad as a lot of people said he was. He was a decent QB. This year, everybody except Florida, Mississippi and maybe LSU absolutely sucks at QB. Still, you're right that the SEC has been really really down at QB for a couple of years now.

we give qb's so much crap but we do play in a league with pretty ridiculous secondaries and overwhelming blitzing schemes. we use this as an excuse to bolster the offenses but ignore it when dealing with the leagues qb's?

I disagree Pat, Mallett has Stafford type arm strength and potential, he's 6'7" and very polished. Plus you can't underestimate how good Petrino is as an offensive mind, for my money he's the best offensive mind in the league and possibly the country(that runs a traditional non-spread offense)

If you say you know Snead was going to be good, you have to say the same thing for Mallett.

Also, I think Jefferson is overrated. His motion is terrible and he was horrendous vs OM and Arkansas. He had more success against GT but they got him out of the pocket, he didn't ever have to sit in the pocket and make decisions.

Cox and McElroy will be very solid though, I'd put them at 4-5; and it's possible that Crompton will rebound with a new coordinator, he's talented

Jevan Snead QB rating as a true FR at Texas = 121.96. Ryan Mallett QB rating as a true FR at Michigan = 105.69. Not to mention that Snead is much more elusive in the pocket and is a much better runner and a much better leader. I've seen both of these QBs play, and Ryan Mallett is no Jevan Snead. Not even close.

You very well could be right about Jefferson. That's why I said "maybe" about him being a decent QB. But he did look damned impressive in the bowl game last year.

You can't really compare the pass efficiency numbers since Snead only played significantly in ONE game at Texas, whereas Mallett started 3 games and played in 10.
Mallett had more hype (for what that's worth) coming out of high school, and was by far better than Clausen in the Army game.
He's got a strong an arm as you'll see, and 6'7" guys don't come along very often. Snead is more elusive in the pocket, but the main reason I think Mallett will take off is b/c he's under Petrino, who probably develops a pro style QB better than anyone in this league (maybe Kiffin or Richt could argue that)

Snead threw 49 passes in 2006. Mallett threw 141 in 2007. If Snead only played significantly in one game, he sure threw a hell of a lot of passes in that game.

How many of Petrino's QBs are doing anything in the NFL today?

Yeah, actually he threw 30 in that game, so his other 19 came in mop up duty, which is why it's hard to compare their stats from that year. Mallett threw almost 100 more passes that year, enough for 3.5 more full games.

And on Petrino, he's coached in the NFL twice and been called "the best playcaller I've ever seen" by Tom Coughlin. He's developed Chris Redman, Jake Plummer, Brian Brohm, and Jason Campbell.

I know Richt, Crowton, Kiffin, Brooks, and Spurrier have developed some QB's in their time, but I'd take Petrino over all of them as an offensive coordinator at this point in their careers.

Here is your problem with the "all the tools" argument with Mallett, he has to be able to throw it to a receiver. He hasn't shown the ability to do that consistently at the college level. Michael Spurlock had a strong arm. Brent Schaeffer had a pretty strong arm too. Having a strong arm doesn't do you a lot of good if you don't know where the ball is going. He played against a fairly weak secondary all spring, and he struggled to complete 50% of his passes.

I'm with patdog on Mallett. I honestly expect Tyler Wilson will be starting for Arkansas by mid-season this year. That's just a gut feeling I have.
