There is no one left in the coaching tree that isn't retired or completely unproven.
The reported tier 1 candidates are Donovan, Lloyd, and Dusty May. I know a lot of fans also like Ben McCollum who seems to be a basketball savant. I'd be happy with Mike Malone who keeps hanging around Chapel Hill.
This isn't my conversation or anything, but I've got a question. Isn't openly trolling ban worthy? That one guy that likes wrestling has had 150 accounts in the last decade I've been around this board.

Why would Donovan be so risky. He has been out of college for 12 years after taking his team to the final 4 in 2014. He did not forget the game and he understands how to coach and coach at a high level. A 2-time National Champion with NBA coaching experience to attract players. I do not see anything risky in Billy Donovan. I just hope he does not end up at UNC. UK should have hired him when they hired Tubby. I understand he turned UK down when they hired BCG and why would he leave a program coming off back-to-back National titles. I have said many times Rick Pitino is the best UK coach of my lifetime and if Donovan ever became the UK Coach he would start out as 2nd behind Pitino with a chance to pass his past Coach. He is that good. Should have never left the college game.
Yeah, I can't imagine anyone thinking Donovan can't suddenly coach now. That's pretty silly honestly. It's not like he hasn't been coaching. In fact, he's been coaching in the NBA. And he's been fairly good in the 10+ years. That guy would kill it at UNC. My hope is, he somehow doesn't wind up at UNC and the Bulls fire him. Then it's just a year waiting on him watching Pope do whatever it is Pope does.
Unless you turned down $8M, I am not sure your anecdote applies here.
Always take the money. You can figure out your feelings later, and your family will thank you forever.

He would have to work 12 years in Ames to make the same.
There is also that pesky time value of money thing. His family should disown him if he turned down that kind of contract because of warm and fuzzies.
4 million is plenty for a lot of people. And if they won a title I'm sure they would double that. I do believe his family could disown him. I've seen it done for way less.
If only there were a way to determine if Donovan would be successful at the college level.
$4 Million is the difference between his kids having to work again.
$12 Million is difference between any Otzelberger working again.

This take makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. He’s currently coaching the Chicago Bulls! Why would that make him a bad college coach? Like what? “Why do you think this guy that’s been teaching math at Harvard would know how to teach HS math?!” Like what in the world are you people talking about
I can answer this because I've had this conversation with my daughter. It is a generational thing. The younger generation uses that word freely and doesn't see anything wrong with it. My generation considers that word to be anathema. The safe play on a chat board is to avoid the word because this is a family friendly board. Even if you see nothing wrong with the word, it is still offensive to some. Just my 2 cents.

I also did the same but then my daughter talked me into taking the positon. I ended up very glad I did. Having said that, your point is solid. It isn't about the money. There are higher considerations.

I didn't say coaching the bulls would make him a bad college coach. It's been forever since he's been a college coach. Who knows if he would be any good? You don't. You think he will I'm assuming.
What is the reason for thinking he wouldn’t be any good though? He’s literally been coaching at a higher level. What is the reason for thinking he would be worse going back to a lower level? I guess I don’t really follow the logic behind that thought.
Oats is not a tier 1 candidate. His buyout, and his players' off the court issues, have him much further down the list.

NBA is a higher level for players. Do you think any NBA coach is doing much coaching? College is completely different than it was 20 years ago. I'm not saying he will be good or bad. I'm saying it's risky. I don't get all foamy at the mouth thinking about donovan taking over for UK.
I like about 5 or 6 current college coaches before him. Maybe even more
I'm not sure on what basis he should have been hired over Tubby at that time. Billy had gone 35-20 in two years at Marshall and 13-17 in his first season at Florida at that point.
I agree but he was on the list that I saw in the top 4 for UNC. We have a lot of fans who would kill to get him here . I am not one of them. But, it is irrelevant. He took his name out of consideration but that does show that he knew his name was being thrown around by some people who said that they had inside info.

Not sure what list you saw, but he has never been among UNC's top 4.
The top 4 was Donovan, Lloyd, May, and Otzelberger.
I don’t think North Carolina will pull in any of those four. I honestly think May may end up at Indiana one day.
Byington signed an extension today. Goodman thinks Dusty May won't take it.
There's some chatter that Lloyd is the guy but if they keep winning things get iffy with the timeframe as far as the portal and whatnot.
