I’m gonna chuckle when UNC hires Jerry Stackhouse. His name is gaining steam it seems.
There is zero evidence of this on any reputable site. There has however been a massive surge in the betting odds for Billy Donovan on certain betting sites.

Also, UNC just suspended their plans to build a new billion dollar arena until after a new coach has been hired. They are planning to throw a lot of money at their top coaching candidates, and the NIL for their first team.

I’ve actually heard it in several places today

Tommy Lloyd isn’t coming and I’m not sure you want Billy Donovan at this juncture.

The Stackhouse thing mostly seems to be coming from “Scoop B” Robinson. He technically is an NBA reporter who’s worked for a few national outlets over the years, but he’s also something of a punchline among NBA fans for how unreliable his rumors tend to be. That’s probably not something to put much stock in at this point.

I do think Donovan might make the most sense of the known candidates right now. I still don’t think they’ll actually pull May or Lloyd even though it seems like they might have seriously tried to. I had previously assumed Donovan liked the NBA lifestyle enough that he wouldn’t actually come back to college, but there does seem to be a lot of smoke lately, including this piece that’s sort of straight from the horse’s mouth, that he’s tired of being a tank commander in Chicago and wants a chance to coach in games that matter again. The timing seems like it could be right for somewhere like UNC to have a shot at him.

If UNC ger Lloyd, it will be frustrating for us Cats fans who wanted to pursue him before Pope was hired. "He's never leaving Arizona until Gonzaga is available" many said. We shall see.
He should never leave Arizona for Gonzaga. I get that's where he made his bones, but if he's serious about titles and legacy, he should stay at an elite program in a power conference.

I can't imagine Lloyd actually making the move. Zona is a great job with all the resources to win big, with way less scrutiny than at UNC. He might seriously consider it but in the end I think Zona will do what's necessary to keep him.
I agree about Lloyd. It just doesn’t really seem plausible.

Donovan makes the most sense.

Its either Tommy Lloyd or Billy at this point
I‘m thinking May or Donavan. I just can’t see Lloyd leaving the West and moving to North Carolina.

He was raised in Washington State. Then was an assistant at Gonzaga. Then, Arizona gave him his first head coaching job. He’s a West Coast guy.

It just doesn’t make sense to me that he would give that up and move to North Carolina.

as someone who lived in Tucson, I just don’t see why Lloyd would leave. I guess the move from Chicago to Chapel Hill is a little more palpable for the Donovan family? Really sucks would love to have him at UK.

Why do people think the Pacific NW is similar to Tucson?

I didn’t say that. Pay attention. Lloyd has never lived anywhere but West, or now Southwest.

Moving to North Carolina would be culture shock for Tommy.

That‘s hard to argue.

Donovan would be UNC’s best choice.

From all accounts, Donovan won't look into this until the NBA season is done. Basically the same thing he told us. However, he also doesn't want to involve himself unless he's the #1 candidate. I can understand that as well since he has two national titles and four Final Fours.

But I'll be sick if UNC gets him because we couldn't wait for the Bulls to get knocked out of the playoffs quickly 2 years ago.

If UNC hires loyd or Donovan i might have to just become a uconn fan or stop watching basketball... im just so internally at strife with our basketball program seemingly slowly drifting into the abyss because our leadership just doesnt care or wont do what it takes to win....and UNC, Duke and Kansas will....

we offered a boatload of money to Hurley and he said no...why didnt we offer a bunch of money to a bunch of other coaches that were qualified like Carolina will.

I think the plan all along was they knew Hurley would say no and they could say they tried...so then they get to hire scott f'n drew or mark pope to fit their agenda ... mitch has this morality superiority complex and his protégé mark hill is a Mormon.

This is exactly why indiana is a nobody now, they had a bad AD and leadership who kept making so so hires. They would offer Bradford Stevenson a ton of money and he would obviously say no..then they would go make some reaching gamble hire. "We'd tried for stevens" "we tried foe hurley" ... UNC will try for Loyd, Dusty May, billy Donovan and they will keep trying for the best and best and best...they wont just skip best candidates 2 through 25 and then hire Mr nobody 50 on the list.

To me I think UNC is eying Donovan, LLyod and May. No moves have been made or short lists came out from what I know. Its been silent since then.

Still dont see why Billy is anything more than wishful thinking. He signed an extension with the Bulls one year ago, so they clearly value him. Theyre 30 win team whose best player is Josh Giddey. I think the Bulls are very aware that the roster they gave Billy Donovan isnt exactly working.

And, if they do decide to let him go (or he wants off this Bulls train), hes still got several options to be an NBA coach elsewhere.

And then theres the fact that he didnt want to be a college coach 10 years ago. Hes the type of college coach who ultimately wants to get to the highest level, the NBA. I cant see him seeing what the college basketball landscape is like noe and thinking "yeah, this looks like ot will be enjoyable".

I just get the sense that neither him nor a guy like Brad Stevens would ever even think about coming back. Lloyd on the other hand, that makes much more sense and seems more realistic, IMO.

This take makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. He’s currently coaching the Chicago Bulls! Why would that make him a bad college coach? Like what? “Why do you think this guy that’s been teaching math at Harvard would know how to teach HS math?!” Like what in the world are you people talking about
Donovan is currently 29-47, good for 12th place in the Eastern conference. He is a risk at this point. UNC recently hired a 6 time championship winning coach and you know how that’s turning out.

The NBA is a cutthroat league but id be real surprised if they fire Donovan because he couldn't turn Giddey and Tre Jone into a playoff team. Like I said above, he signed an extension in the off season and it's not like the roster was in any shape to contend. I think they know hes a top10-ish type of coach, but they need to get talent around him.

David Sisk said UNC is the only college job Donovan is interested in taking. Guess we can rule him out of future considerations.
Isn't the conventional wisdom that Donavan is going to be fired in Chicago? If so, you'd think maybe he'd rather go ahead and take the UNC job now if offered to him before that happens. Looks better - ask Calipari.

Lloyd had never lived anywhere but the Pacific Northwest... until he moved to the damn desert in Tucson.

How are you going to argue Chapel Hill is some major culture shock for a guy after that?

1. The Bulls traded away 80% of their talent before the trade deadline. They basically committed to a complete rebuild, but did it too late to get a top draft pick in the draft. So if Donovan stays, he's looking at a few years of rebuilding just to get back to where they were last year.

2. The Bulls front office has become increasingly harder to work with.

3. There were rumors swirling Donovan was going to step down weeks ago, before the UNC job was even open. Back then the talk was he might take a year away from basketball before looking for a new coaching job. But since the UNC job opened, he has talked with UNC and reciprocated interest.
