What are the practicalities (expense aside) of a temporary taraflex floor for volleyball? VB and WBB both use Carmichael, and the seasons overlap.
throw in UNC gymnastics and wrestling at the same time as well.
I actually was curious on this recently and went down a rabbit hole.
Ore St shares their arena with other sports:
Installation vid for Ball St in their BBall gym:
Nebraska coach discussing his moveable floor:
Moving Nebraska's court.
UofW shares their arena with WBB and MBB, and only had one match in 2018 where they could not use their floor due to logistics.
The load in and out for the portable taraflex does not appear to me to be any more laborious than setting up the gymnastics apparatuses.
According to the Taraflex website there are now over 100 D1 universities that have a Taraflex home court (and a handful of lower divisions ones as well). This is now a norm for a P4 level team, not a splurge
In the ACC this includes:
- Clemson (2013)
- Notre Dame (2016)
- Georgia Tech (2017)
- Pitt (2018)
- Boston College (2021)
- Florida State (2022)
- Stanford (2024)
- Syracuse (2024)
- Virginia (2024)
- Louisville (2024)
- Wake Forest (2024)
...that is out of 18 volleyball teams
The late adopters
- SMU plays on hardwood, shares floor with MBB and WBB
- dook plays in Cameron, uses the wood floor.
- NCSU plays at Reynolds on a specialized temp floor, but not sure what it is. shares facility with WBB, wrestling and gymnastics like UNC does.
- VT plays in Cassel Colosseum on the MBB/WBB court
- Miami seems to have a dedicated volleyball arena, but no Taraflex floor.
- Cal plays volleyball on hardwood on a court they share with MBB and WBB (Haas)
- and...UNC
As you can see in the ACC list above, the adoption of Taraflex has increased at a very rapid pace the last few years, this is a national trend. UNC, frankly, is behind in this respect.
The only issue I can possibly see is the logistics of storing the floor when not in use and/or transporting it to the practice players can utilize it optimally. Is it useful if you team only sees it in game day? No clue if Carmichael/Woolen offer specific obstacles? Would we need to buy a second court for the practice gym?
