Also, loved seeing the WBB team at Carmichael last night taking in the game. Between VB, WBB, Gym Heels and Wrestling, Carmichael should be rocking this year!

What are the practicalities (expense aside) of a temporary taraflex floor for volleyball? VB and WBB both use Carmichael, and the seasons overlap.
The biggest one is that these floors are built with shock absorption, which leads to significantly less injuries for its athletes. The other piece of it is it's now required to have a taraflex floor to host the first round of the NCAA tournament (top 16 seeds).

I thought we earned the win more that UF played poorly, but reading those comments sure sounded like Gators were a mess. The match could have gone a whole lot different at 23-all in the first set. Team has gotten mentally tougher; that's a set, and possibly match, that we drop in prior seasons.
Agreed. Our game plan was solid and we executed it very well.

I was not asking about the benefits of taraflex. I was asking if it is practical/possible to have a floor that you keep putting down for VB and taking up for WBB.

I saw what you saw: a well executing UNC team. I am still new to volleyball fandom, but my basic take is that winning volleyball is:

About staying in phase: getting that dig, then set, then spike in succession as often as possible. doing that is how you play competent volleyball. It gives you more total attacks (spike attempts) And even on the top D1 level it can be noticeable which teams can do that well on any given day. FL had more problems with staying in phase than we did, so in that respect, yes they were the instrument of their own demise. But the point that I am making here is that this is almost always the case: the better executing team wins. We did better than them. Both are true.

Other than staying in phase, the two main factors that allow you to score more while you are serving (harder time to score) are:
1. Service pressure: getting the other team out of sync with aces or hard balls to get set properly.
2. Blocks at the net.
Teams that can do these can score in bunches even while serving.
FL is a better blocking team than us by my eyes. But on this day, we did a much better job creating service pressure which directly lead to much of the out-of-sync digging and setting mentioned above.

Their fans of course are going to focus more on what they are doing wrong than what we are doing right, especially when they are favored.

In the first set, they did indeed get to 23-23 and I was worried a bit. but in the ebb and flow of the match that was by far their peak whereas we stayed in a commanding lead most every other moment. Kudos to the Tar Heels for not folding, but by then I think they knew they deserved that set and were playing better than FL.

I laughed at this comment on the volley talk board: "Are the balls properly inflated? I mean there is someone in the athletics staff that knows how to manage that."
Yeah, me too! I watched the officials check the pressure of each ball prior to the match; I'm sure they would have said something had they found an issue. :)

Then, yes... a lot of P4 schools, and smaller schools, in the country do it. State does it in Reynolds even.

I hate when people and fans try to make excuses for losing. Florida got beat and that is all to it. I do not want to hear they had a bad game or day. When one of our team's lose, nobody makes an excuse for us losing. Two years ago when our women's lacrosse team was getting beat, no commentator or fan stood up and make excuses for them losing. Nobody (commentators, other teams, etc) mentioned that they majority of our starters were injured. Coach Levi did not make any excuses. They just kept the receipts. I notice last night that the commentators who were on call were trying to make excuses when Florida fell behind. Stop it, Stop it. UNC took it to them and they just got their butts beat. The same way that FSU beat Alabama in football the first week. FSU took it to them and our volleyball took it to Florida. Some people are trying to tarnish our victory from last night. Go Heels!

One thing being overlooked is how relatively young this team is..2 seniors on the entire roster. Potential to be really really good next season. Let's hope we don't lose anyone to the portal..which is a high possibility.

UNC travels to Columbia at 6 PM today to take on the Gamecocks. The game will be streaming on SECN+. Stats here.

South Carolina has traditionally been a UNC level team, but we are trending up this year after making the 2nd round of the NCAA tourney, while SoCar is in a rebuild under a new coach after getting ousted 1st round last season.

SC was picked 14th out of 16 in the SEC preseason poll. They are currently 3-4 with wins over mid-majors ETSU, Campbell and Coastal, but lost to all the P4 teams: 2-3 Clemson, swept by FSU, 1-3 NCSU, and throw in an AAC loss 1-3 USF (a team receiving votes in the AVCA poll). None of those teams are ranked, the 3 ACC teams were well below us in the ACC preseason poll.

They have a good Libero (Harris), their best OH is Johnson, and Thompson returns as their best setter. They have 3 mid-major transfers with 1st or second team all conference honors.

Would be a solid road victory for the real Carolina.

We should come out really fired up. We got swept by them in Columbia last year when we really shouldn't have.

Safi can’t pass today and our hitters are only hitting angle. Need hit down the line to make blockers setup near pin. And we’re not using our middle hitters either so scar is getting easier blocks.

Thanks for sharing. For those of us who like Field Hockey and cannot see it or cannot not attend the home game. The score is 5-0 in the 3rd quarter. We are up. I had a feeling that we were going to come out flat. As you mentioned TAHeel, the other players are going to have to step it up.

Nice 4th set and then an incredibly sloppy start to the 5th. Down 5-2 and not sure they’ve done anything to earn it

13-13 and we commit a service error and the set too close to the net. 15-13 South Carolina wins. Bad loss. Not unexpected given the road game after a huge win, but disappointing

Let’s chill. I started watching at 10-7 USC jr 5th set and it was close. Nod to home team with good crowd. Some mistakes we can improve upon. This tough schedule should help come ACC play. This is a process, like with football, and the team already looks good.
lets give them some time. Go heels

I agree with all the comments. This team is relatively young with a lot of new faces and players. They are still learning how to play with each other. They will be fine. Someone stated that they were over confident. That could be true. Sometimes a lost like this will bring a team back down to earth if they were over confident. I also agree that one lost does not define a season. They will have to bounce back the next game.
