I wonder if Inside Lacrosse will now complete its ranking of the 2026 class? The present status of rankings for that class:

30 players evaluated as 5-star recruits with the top 10 ranked
40 players evaluated as 4-star recruits

USA beat Canada 18-11 to win the Atlas Cup (sixes format).

Chloe Humphrey, who had a game-high five assists on Sunday, was named winner of the Titan Award as tournament MVP. She finished with 10 goals and 18 points in the three games.

(Her teammates included McCool, Apuzo, Scane and North)

I am just amazed how Chloe Humphrey is the goat of women's lacrosse as she just finished her freshman year. She is playing against and with the best lacrosse players in the US and in the world and her stats are just off the charts. She makes you want to watch women's lacrosse. I am so glad that she plays for UNC. I glad I bought one of her shirts too. She is so humble, has great character, and an amazing person at such a young age. Shout out to her parents and her two older sisters who helped to make her the person she is today. Go Heels!

As good as she was her freshman year..it seems like she continues to get better with no end in sight. A terryfing prospect for college lacrosse..

At 20 years of age she's already the best player in the world.

I know fall ball is underway but I do hope she gets some rest. She's been playing lacrosse nonestop post championship.

The Heels played in a Fall Ball event against dook and Richmond this past Saturday. Did anyone attend?

BTW, the only 2025 Fall Ball event in Chapel Hill is this Friday (Oct 3) at 7:00 pm vs. High Point.

I don’t know where the Friday game is; I will keep my eyes peeled. I am not familiar with Finley; does it have lights? (the game starts at 7:00)

I have attended fall games at Finley in the past. It seems like last year they played on the practice field between the law school and Boshamer.

If I was coach Levi. I would not play our main players for the first couple of games. I would definitely let Chole Humphrey, BWW, SF, EO, KL, our goalie rest and I would mainly play the freshmen along with players who did not play a lot more just to see what they can do. I would especially play the ones who got hurt last year, EI, TC, and the other young lady, plus the transfers who just came in this year.

Finley does have a small grandstand on the near field. Bring a chair if they are using the far field. Both are lit good enough for play at night.

With the graduation of Ashley Humphrey and the record-setting 90 assists she had in 2025, the offense facilitator (quarterback) is probably the most critical role the Tar Heels will need to fill In 2026. It’s likely that this role will be filled by multiple players, similar to how the 2022 national champions played after the graduation of facilitator-extraordinaire Katie Hoeg.

Chloe Humphrey’s play with the USA sixes team has demonstrated what a talented passer she is — she was the MVP of the Atlas Cup with 10g/8a in three tourney games. She will be double-teamed a lot in 2026; we’ll see her generate offense by assisting teammates. (In 2022, Jamie Ortega, the career scoring leader for UNC, led the team in assists with 44, increasingly her assist total by 16 from the previous season.)

CH had 28 assists in 2025. I think she’ll be the team leader in assists this season, possibly doubling her total from last season. Fortunately, there are some strong finishers among her teammates. (Of course, CH will still score a lot of goals in 2026.)

If you go back and read TC information, she is sort like AH and there is another person on the team last year that was being groomed by AH to take her role this year. I cannot remember that young ladies name. They are some freshman coming in who are suppose to be great passers as well. They have some many weapons on the offensive end that it will not matter if CH is double team. With EO, With have AP, we have the transfer from Louisville, we have EI who was hurt all last year and we have some freshman that are tall that can score as well. The girl who won the MVP during the East vs West game can score as well.

Today Inside Lacrosse posted 2026 D1 Women’s Way-Ahead Rankings. Here is the write-up on the UNC women, who unsurprisingly are projected to be #1:

1. North Carolina

  • 2025: 22-0, NCAA Champion
  • Biggest Losses: Ashley Humphrey, Marissa White. Olivia Vergano
  • Biggest Returners: Chloe Humphrey, Brooklyn Walker-Welch, Sam Forrest, Betty Nelson, Eliza Osburn, Addison Pattillo, Kate Levy, Kiley Mottice, Caroline Godine, Kaleigh Harden
The Tar Heels return the reigning Tewaaraton Award winner, Chloe Humphrey — the first freshman (redshirt) in history to claim the honor. Hyped as one of the most decorated recruits in recent memory, she exceeded expectations with 90 goals, capped by an electric Championship Weekend in which she posted 11 goals and an assist.

Her sister and fellow finalist Ashley Humphrey departs, along with grad student Olivia Vergano, and Marissa White exits via transfer. But the Tar Heels’ depth remains unmatched. Sophomores Eliza Osburn, Addison Pattillo, and Kate Levy all earned major minutes as freshmen, while defensive anchors Brooklyn Walker-Welch, Sam Forrest and Betty Nelson return to lead a unit that allowed just 6.86 goals per game — the nation’s best.

(It’s somewhat surprising that the Tar Heels‘ uber-talented freshman class is not mentioned.)

Here is the entire article, which lists IL’s 25 top teams:

USA Lacrosse Magazine is running a week’s series of articles on “Super Sophs”. First up, UNC’s Eliza Osburn.

SUPER SOPHS: NORTH CAROLINA'S ELIZA OSBURN

October 2, 2025

Chloe Humphrey—perhaps you heard of her. The redshirt freshman stormed back from injury and into the college lacrosse zeitgeist, lifting the Tar Heels to a national championship with a massive (literal and figurative) assist from her older sister Ashley (and a roster stacked with a constellation of stars).
Humphrey became the first freshman to win a Tewaaraton. There’s no asterisk—there shouldn’t be, however, lest we forget about the true freshman that made an impact (including two of Humphrey’s teammates). The number of freshmen who worked their way to the top of depth charts and onto stat sheets in 2025 marked a departure from previous seasons, where fifth years took advantage of their extra year of eligibility and added to their legacies.
As our choices for the most impactful true sophomores repeatedly shared, the experiences they gained from being thrown into the fire served as one of the best teachers — and motivators — ahead of the 2026 season. We spoke to them about their rookie experiences, the work they did over the summer to stave off any rumors of a sophomore slump and their visions for their next three seasons.
Their responses showcased players who are older, wiser and as hungry as ever to carve their own legacies.

SUPER SOPHS

  • October 2: North Carolina's Eliza Osburn
  • October 3: Navy's Alyssa Chung
  • October 6: Florida's Clark Hamilton
  • October 7: Penn's Orly Sedransk
  • October 8: North Carolina's Kate Levy
First up is North Carolina’s Eliza Osburn, who just finished up a training camp with the U.S. women’s sixes national team at USA Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md.

ELIZA OSBURN

Midfield
Freshman year stats: 35G, 9A, 16GB, 10CT, 56DC
Postseason honors: USA Lacrosse Magazine All-American (honorable mention), NCAA All-Tournament Team, ACC Freshman of the Year, Second-Team All-ACC
Eliza Osburn admits she’s “easily overwhelmed.” As the No. 6 player in the Class of 2024 according to Inside Lacrosse, Osburn knew the calls and texts would hit her phone at midnight on Sept. 1, 2022, her junior year. Those closest to her encouraged her to research schools and narrow her list before the Big Day. Osburn counts herself lucky in that two of those people were in her own home. Her sister, Tess, plays at Marquette, and her brother, Truman, played at Tampa.
“That way, when September 1 did hit and people started reaching out, I would only entertain about seven schools and get to know the people,” Osburn said. “It was hard to create relationships with people, knowing they’d end if I said no and continue if I said yes.”
But that’s the nature of the beast. The predictable subjects made Osburn’s list: Florida, Boston College and UNC. She loved them all, so the plot thickened.”
“But when I came to North Carolina, they just blew everything out of the water,” Osburn said. “I fell in love immediately. [Head coach] Jenny [Levy] was so passionate and smart. She loves the game and drew me in, and I watched the chemistry on the team and thought it was special. I love the area, the history at North Carolina and how all the alumni come back and stay connected.”
While roster turnover was a theme heading into the 2025 season, North Carolina brought back many stars — including players like Chloe Humphrey and Marissa White, who sat out 2024 with injury (and had an axe to grind). Yet, Osburn didn’t seem overwhelmed by the prospect of playing time. She saw an opportunity.
“I knew that they might be looking for a change and that they were excited about our class,” Osburn said. “I had played with other people in my class at different tournaments, and I knew how special we were. The fall went great ... There was a mental game of, ‘Am I going to play with all of the people coming back? What will it look like?’ But it fired me up. There was so much potential on the team.”
There was also the potential to learn while playing, which Osburn did, seeing action in 22 games and making 13 starts. The veterans weren’t clogging the lane. They were helping her to find hers.
“Ashley was a huge voice on our team last year, so she and I got to know each other on a different level outside of lacrosse,” Osburn said. “Defensively, Sam [Forrest] and Brooklyn [Walker-Welch] were also key voices, and Ellie [Traggio] helped me in the midfield, and I had a great connection with Sophie [Student] and Kayleigh [Harden].”
Offensively, Osburn saved some of her best performances for the playoffs. With the Humphreys' faceguarded in the ACC Championship game, she netted a hat trick, earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Her three assists in the NCAA Tournament Second round against Clemson marked a season-best. She matched her season-high with a four-goal performance against Princeton in the quarterfinals to send the Tar Heels back to Championship Weekend for the first time since 2022 — technically a two-year drought, a figurative eternity in Chapel Hill.,
“The Humphreys would say, ‘Eliza, this is your draw. ‘” If you get hte ball, I want you to go down and score,’” Osburn recalled. “The second I got the ball, I’d then hear Ashley’s voice, ‘Go, go, go. The confidence they had in me, to take the ball or control of the game, gave me the confidence to go so. Toward the end of the season, I felt like I grew into the player that I am — I can take the skills I am blessed with, put them forth and show what I’ve got.”
The Tar Heels went forward and won the NCAA Championship. Over the summer, Osburn turned the page, tapping into the alumni network that had drawn her to Chapel Hill and working with Emily Parros, a member of UNC’s championship team in 2013. Though Ashley’s voice will no longer be in her ear this season, Chloe’s will — and the Tewaaraton winner was a regular in Osburn’s DMs this summer.
“We texted all summer about how we’re excited to get back and do it again,” Osburn said.
“It” includes hopes for another natty. And with redshirt and true sophomores Humphrey, Osburn, Kate Levy, Addison Pattill and goalie Betty Nelson all back (among others), it begs the question: Can anyone stop the ‘Heels any time soon?
“I don’t think we have a doubt in our minds that we can do it again,” Osburn said. “We have so much chemistry and talent. If we can continue to grow, we can probably be unstoppable.”

[Note that Kate Levy will be featured next Wednesday. I will post her article on October 8.]

I totally agree with you Airball. What is also surprising is Chloe Humphrey should be the face of women's lacrosse hands down and IL did not or would not put her picture on the way to early top 25 rankings. They had the girl from Florida, NW, etc. They did have Kate's picture I think in there. If this is not bias then I do not know what bias is. This a bunch of bull.

This article specifies that its subjects are “true sophomores.”

”our choices for the most impactful true sophomores” [quote from the article]

I don’t think Chloe or UNC would complain about the amount of coverage she has received in the past six months. As a matter of fact, Carolina might welcome that two other players are receiving attention in this article. Unfortunately for you, Chloe’s status as a redshirt sophomore leaves her out of the subject pool for this article.

Was anyone able to attend last night‘s home fall ball game?
I attended. The game was played on Navy Field, and I was at one end of the field at ground level, so I could not see much at the far end of the field. I did not have a roster listing the new players, so could not tell who was who. There were even 2 #42s on the field at the same time. BWW and Traggio did not play. I think the starting back 4 were Forrest, Roberts, Longfield and Corkins. Corkins played exclusively as a defender, and Mottice played exclusively as an attacker. I knew Corkins was fast, but let me tell you, she is FAST! On one draw control, the initial draw went into our defensive third, she grabbed it, and did a 1-woman clear running past all 6 defenders that HPU had set up in their defensive third for the draw, getting a 1 on 1 against the goalie which she converted, only to have the goal wiped away due to a failed stick check. She is going to be devastating on fast break clears. I forgot to notice whether Leonard or Ingrili played. EO looked even better than in the spring. She will be a nightmare to defend. This team is big, athletic, and fast. The ride was very good. I think Pattillo can do most of the things Marissa White did for us, and a number of things Marissa maybe couldn’t. Betty played the first half and only gave up 1 goal. Lexi played the 3d Q and Brigid played the 4th Q. Final score was probably about 20-4. Chloe did play some. Sarah Gresham took the draws for the first 20 minutes or so, and was dominant, either winning the ball herself, or sending it right to one of our players on the circle. Godine and Calabria may be the primary players behind the cage.

We were there last night too (once we figured out where it was being played, lol) and started off standing with a bunch of the CO 2026 commits' parents who were here on their official visits. They are soooooo excited about coming here and also shared that the CO 2027 is outstanding as well and pretty much locked in to commit to UNC but I didn't ask for any specifics.

Thanks, guys, for attending and providing commentary.

Nate, I think you are right about Calabria and Godine playing at the ‘X’ (behind the cage). The speculation has been that Calabria was being groomed for this position; nice to know that this appears accurate. I agree with your assessment of Pattillo; I think she is a little better dodger than Marissa White (not a criticism of Marissa, I was a fan). I think we’ll see significant improvement from the rising sophomores, who became increasingly productive as last season progressed. I really hope that Charlotte Corkins works her way into increased playing time.

Mtn2Sea - nice to hear the positive feedback about the 2026 class. They are an exceptionally solid group.

I might have to sneak over for the fall scrimmages at dook at the end of the month.

The news about Ellie Traggio is concerning; it makes me wonder whether her injury at the end of the championship game was serious. She is a three-year starter who has been a little under-appreciated.

GO HEELS!

Listen Folks, Jeni told everyone last year that CC was the faster player on the team last year if you listen to her comments. She is faster than EO. She torn her ACL her between her junior and senior year. We all know that it takes at least two years to fully recover from this injury. Marked my word when I say this. She is going to be in the rotation more this year. Also, I told yall that Calabria was being groomed by AH last year to take her spot this year. This is no surprise if you listen to what AH said last year. Lastly, I told yall that one of the reasons why MW left was because she knew that AP, and the freshmen coming in was going to really push her for playing time. She saw the writing on the wall and left. If you looked at the stats from last year AP had less playing time but she almost had as many goals as MW did with last playing time. I would like to see who had the best goal per minute between those two, AP or MW? Lastly, the transfer coming in from Louisville who played for Japan this past summer had more goals and assist than MW; therefore, this team has the players and talent to absorb the lost of MW.

Tess is a natural quarterback. She's really really good. She was forgotten about last year since she was on the sidelines while the other freshman shone. Her time is now. She did alot of damage from behind the cage at St. Anthony's. No doubt in my mind she'll thrive there. Once Godine graduates she'll take the reigns full time.

The Inside Lacrosse staff concurs. The postgame write-up following the New Balance Senior All-American game recognized Calabria as a standout:

Tess Calabria, A, St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) | North Carolina
Calabria did a little bit of everything for the North attack. A natural quarterback, she keeps the offense moving and has a clear understanding of how to attack seams in the opposing defense. A goal and two assists in the game, Calabria added a pair of groundballs and caused turnovers from working hard in the ride to regain possession.

One thing to keep in mind as the new season approaches is that the 2024 class was a special one. It is rare to have that many day 1 impact freshman, even at at school like UNC where there is an abundance of high end talent.

It is unrealistic to expect the class of 2025 to repeat what 2024 was able to accomplish. So it's better to keep expectations measured because we have been spoiled in a way.

Plus, super soph Eva Ingrilli (yes remember her?) will be returning. Racked up 16 goals in her first 8 starts as a true freshman. As mentioned, Calabria will see significant action. Potentially GraceAnn Leonard as well, who was also really good in limited action her first year.

Needless to say, that will eat into available playing time for some freshmen. I think Winkler sees the most action out of the freshman. Audrey Hurleman is a physical specimen and seems like the type Jenny loves to put on defense so i think it will be hard to keep her out of the lineup.

Here’s the USA Lacrosse Magazine’s article on UNC Super Soph, Kate Levy:

KATE LEVY

Midfield
Freshman stats: 14G, 9A, 25GB, 26CT, 24DC
When Jenny Levy — or as Kate calls her, “Mom” — texted her daughter on Sept. 1, 2022, and asked her if she would like to become a Tar Heel, it was almost a rhetorical question.
She long dreamt of being one of “Mommy’s Girls.” Much has been made of the dream-come-true nature of winning a national championship together last year — and it’s, indeed, a nice story. But Levy also dreamt of playing alongside another key cog on last year’s team: Chloe Humphrey.
The two were inseparable at North Carolina clinics, with Levy never far behind the future Tewaaraton Award winner.
“Playing together was something we had been talking about since she was about 10 and I was 8 years old,” Levy said. “She’s so easy to play with, so creative and loves the game. We were finally able to do it. We soaked it in. She was in my warmup line this year, and it was funny. We had so many conversations about how cool it was to be together for longer than three days at camp, finally.”
A true two-way midfielder, Levy officially enrolled at UNC having compiled 135 points in two years at McDonogh (Md.). The statistics from her freshman campaign show that her most significant impact came between the 30s, on defense and in the circle. Levy has no complaints there.

“On teams I’ve been on, I’ve needed to score goals and make flashier plays,” Levy said. “But that’s not how I’ve always evaluated my game. I would much rather make a million scrappy plays and score zero goals than the other way around.”

Article continues, Full article here:

IMO, the article undersells Levy. She led UNC in caused turnovers last season and IIRC, she also led all Division I freshmen in caused turnovers. Additionally, the coast-to-coast play vs. BC in the ACC tournament was initiated by an exceptional check and caused turnover.

I like the story of Kate and CH hanging together at UNC clinics when they were young. I think we can be confident that she has worked diligently in the off-season. IMO, Kate is destined to be a strong team leader in years to come.

GO HEELS!

Side note: In addition to her scoring, Chloe Humphrey was ferocious on the ride in 2025; commentators noted this at times. Last season, she led UNC attackers with 14 caused turnovers, twice as many as sister Ashley Humphrey, who was second among attackers with 7 CTs. (Players who had more were defenders or two-way midfielders.) Comparing her stats to the attackers who were Tewaaraton finalists - Madison Taylor 11 CT, Rachel Clark 6 and Emma LoPinto 6.

(Unsurprisingly, CH tied for the team lead in yellow cards (4) and led the team with 5 green cards.)

CH was a master at using her speed to snipe a stick check from behind. you could often just see it unfolding as the prey did not see the predator coming in for the kill.
That's one of MJ's old tricks to let the guy with the ball get in front of him and swipe it away from behind. They never see it coming.

I think a few of those yellow and green cards that CH got was because the other teams; especially Florida was being overly aggressive towards her and the referee's would not give them the green card or yellow card because they allow it to happen; therefore, CH got tired of being bumped, hit with the stick and she felt that she had to take matters into her own hands. I know she got bruises on her body from that. I would you feel if you got hit in the face with the stick and there was no call. Go back and look at the tape and you will see what I mean. They do not mentioned that fact do they?

Chloe was certainly really pushed around last year with a "foul 'em every time because they will only call it some of the time" mentality. Of course it did not really work because that woman is fearless in the middle of the field. Probably the most impressive part of her game to me is she has serious grit for a speed and finesse type player. She is only 5'4" and probably was the smallest player on the team.

To that end, I have no problem with her sticking her nose in there and giving back what they were serving (within reason; need your best players on the field.)

I don't have a long history of watching Lacrosse, but Chloe is one of the top defenders from an attack position that I have seen.

I remember one top team put out a couple of vids of their attacker or midfielder wreaking havoc with caused turnovers (may have been Maddie Taylor?) and I watched it thinking well we have been seeing that from Chloe all season.

Speaking of Taylor, here is another way to try and earn a green or yellow on Chloe. This BS actually worked a few times last year, even earlier in this championship game:

Here’s inside Lacrosse’s report on fall ball scrimmages that took place this past weekend in Starks, MD.

Here is the portion of the report about UNC’s impressive scrimmages vs. Navy and Denver:

North Carolina

North Carolina separated early, but Navy kept fighting them back in what was an unofficial 16-7 Heels result. (This score, as most of them in fallball, is unofficial. Scores only tell a part of the story as teams play substitute their starters at different times.)

After Navy’s Alyssa Chung started the scoring with a rollback bouncer, it was off to the races for the Heels. Eliza Osburn took a ball off the draw and went down the heart of the Navy D like an unstoppable locomotive to tie it up, then the Heels scored the next four goals. With Caroline Godine acting as the pace-setter along with Addison Pattillo, Chloe Humphrey and Tess Calabria, they put up a diverse offensive output in a share-the-ball system.

Humphrey was mirrored by Navy’s Jalin Jenkins, who did an admirable job against the Tewaaraton winner. That just freed up everyone else to do work. Kaleigh Harden had a big day, and with a delay move then cut to the middle to make it 2-1. Kate Levy had a smart off-ball cut to make it 3-1, then Pattillo scored from Osburn motion. Harden again swept to her right.

Chung was a problem on the other end, and she put in a BTB and a nice fake and finish for Navy’s first three goals. Humphrey got on the board in the second with a move across GLE.

With Brooklyn Walker-Welch in Canada for Super Sixes, the Heels' other defenders got reps, with everyone contributing. Levy was a force on the defensive end, and Charlotte Corkins had a few pick-offs; on one possession, Corkins picked off a pass, Navy got it back quickly, then Avery Roberts picked off the next one. Betty Nelson was frustrating with her in-tight saves.

A scary notion for the rest of lacrosse: The sophomores who contributed so much as freshmen all looked noticeably better. Humphrey is uber-efficient even when face-guarded, Osburn was arguably the best player on the field, Levy does everything end to end, and Pattillo was a cerebral and effective presence on offense.

Navy fought back and narrowed the deficit to three goals, but UNC had a pair of runs in the second half to take command. Osburn scored another in transition, Pattillo had a few, and Calabria looked increasingly confident with every minute.

Unofficially, UNC bested Denver, 12-5

The defense — and likely the short rest going back-to-back — gave the Heels some trouble early, but they adjusted quickly and scored five of six goals in the second quarter. Humphrey had a hat trick and was more of a shooting presence, and Harden ripped a few scores.

Reese King, the No. 13 incoming freshman, got a lot of run in the second game. Her athleticism and physicality were already creating havoc.
