I hope Kennedy and Malsom fly back tomorrow. USA dominated possession with that endless back and forth between the center backs, but they couldn’t finish up front despite many decent chances. NED goalie looked far superior to ours.

Very disappointing match. I'm sure the girls will fly back as soon as they can. Our goalie looked lost.

I think you must understood why I said a great win. When you have been losing the way this team has this season getting a win helps you mentally from just throwing in the towel and giving up.

Man, that is a brutally disappointing loss for the USA U17s. Netherlands were 1-2 in their group stage games and outscored 4-9 in those 3 games combined. What the hell happened?

No Thomas today (head injury or concussion protocol) means we are now down 5 starters.

Mentioned during game that Alvarez is out for the year with a foot injury. Malsom and Kennedy did return for some minor spot minutes late in the game.
They had Aven on Facetime in the huddle just before breaking to take the field. OT was wearing concussion glasses. NCSU was working Ulmark pretty hard, so the boom ball had to work this time. I get tired of watching it, but it was the right call for this game. Eres is a very hard worker and has played well this season, but she didn't get any favorable bounces last night. Tessa and Pennie have developed a really good working relationship in the middle, but they still don't do a great job advancing the ball. Speaking of Pennie, I think she's been banned from shooting. That's the only explanation that I can think of. She has had several good looks this season but just won't take a rip even when it's 100% the right thing to do. In the second half last night, she was practically in the 6 yd box with a look but tried to pass it off.

Great stuff and I agree with all of this. The NCSU defending mid should have been warned on the first hard tackle that clearly took out a UNC dangerous opportunity after she got beat on the wing. And then she should have been carded on numerous pushes on Ullmark or when the stepped on Gaetino’s Achilles from way behind the play, decleating her.

my main gripe is all of the mids and some forwards repeatedly passing backwards or to the sideline when they are under no pressure and could easily turn and advance through the middle. Happens a dozen times every half. If they are facing their own goal, they will pass backwards, no matter what.

I love that they played direct to Faasse rather than the stagnant slow build-up style. The goal was a highlight play and she also had 3-4 other excellent open opportunities. Give us more of that! They did look tired in the second half but worked hard to hold on.

Related to Pennie, not sure she has any power when shooting. She should at times, to keep them honest but the ones she has taken have been very easy to gobble up by keeper

Thanks for that information. I forgot about the scandal. It is sad that the NCAA will not let this go. Louisville men's basketball had strippers, etc. when Rick Pitino was the head coach and the NCAA has forgiven them. Heck, one of the strippers involved wrote a book about this and made a ton of money. This is just plain hatred by the NCAA. Grown ups acting like children. Rick Pitino has surely been forgiven. I do not know how he is still able to coach in college basketball after that scandal.

To be fair, the baseball team was once #16 in RPI and didn’t make the tournament (while RPI 1-15 and 17) were all regional hosts. That was soon after the academic “scandal” was ended with no violations so it seemed like the ncaa was taking it out on our athletic department in other ways.
cute. u mean the second straight year we set the record for highest rpi ever to not make the tournament? mere coincidence i’s sure

I cancelled my Disney bundle last week because somebody needed to be just on principle. But YTTV has until next Friday to sort this out before I cancel them and get the stand-alone ESPN.

Oof. A 14 seed? Seems like the committee was a bit harsh there. SOS was 24, I think?

Clemson got an 8?? Wake is 7??

This is absolutely insane. By pairing us with a 3 seed they are effectively placing us as a 14 seed and saying that

13 seed Houston Christian (161 RPI) 12-8-2
12 Seed South Dakota State (75 RPI) 11-2-6
11 Seed UTSA (63 RPI) 9-5-6
10 Seed Illinois (41 RPI) 13-5-2
9 Seed Liberty (45 RPI) 14-3-4

Are all better than us, within our own bracket? We have a 25 RPI and went 12-6. It is very clear that all of these other teams were reasonably ranked according to RPI.

And all except Illinois are automatic qualifiers. We are the only at large bid IN THE ENTIRE TOURNAMENT who is seeded as an 11 seed or higher. This has to be an error.

If we can somehow get past Tenn we will actually be well positioned getting the 6 seed next. But most of all Tenn should be PO'd what a horrible draw for a top 10 team in the 1st round.

Well, I am surprised that we made it in. They are trying to make sure that we are knocked out of the tournament early. Go Heels!

No there is no surprise that we made it in. The metrics they use put us as a 7 seed. No prognosticators considered us a bubble team.

I am convinced our seeding is an error. Like they moved pieces around the board and forgot where they left us and turned in their homework assignment before proofreading it. I will eat my hat if there is any other explanation.

This will be talked about nationally for the next week.

FYI after the top 1-32 are seeded they prioritize geography, so we aren’t pencilled in as a 14
Look at the RPI of everyone else in our bracket they are neatly ordered to their seed. Does not compute. Does Liberty have different geography than us? Their RPI is significantly lower than ours and they are in our bracket. Plenty of room for a 3-way swap.

Is a plane ride to Memphis different than a plane ride to Knoxville? Swap us with Illinois.

Lipscomb is in Nashville. Seems like a car ride to Knoxville. Their RPI is 20 points below ours. Send us to Starkville.

7 seed UCF got paired with Maine. We are 500 miles closer to Orlando.

Mirganton WV is not that far. Switch us with Wagner

There is no other at-large team in the entire tournament paired with another team lower than a 6 seed. We got a 3.

Bottom line: we had to be one of the first 4-6 teams not in top 32. we should have been at the very front of the line in finding a reasonable seeded foe.

More importantly, in terms of fairness, Tenn was screwed with a borderline top 25 team who is the defending champion and is likely returning a couple of starters for the tourney. They should be expecting a 5 goal blowout round 1.
