I put their guitar player down as an underrated player and he was also their singer so I have to put the band in this thread.

April Wine

Also, Blue Oyster Cult, Head East, The Guess Who

Traffic - infused different style of music, one of the first jazz-rock bands.
The Small Faces
Free
Atlanta Rhythm Section.
James Gang - With Joe Walsh. After he left, they should have just given up
Good ones - Free and James Gang were 2 of my favorites as well
Traffic (Low Spark album was worn out)
Never pictured Walsh as an Eagles kind of guy but I must say it worked extremely well!

U2 and Greta Van Fleet- kidding Stardust!!

Saw the Smithereens back in the day. They were outstanding.
Dixie Greggs
Driven and Crying
Fog Hat
Three Dog Night
The Clash
Siouxsie with the Banshees
Simple Minds
Dope Lemon
Foals
Krunghbin

For me The Clash are a well known part of Punk music. Right there with the Sex Pistols

An unknown from The Clash would be

Big Audio Dynamite

Other good bands who were a mix of well known bands.

Audioslave
The Firm
Power Station
Electronic
Velvet Revolver

Unfortunately these mixed bands only produced one or maybe two albums

One of my all time favorite bands. Somewhere I Never Traveled is one stellar album. Unfortunately for them they got labeled as a balladeer/yacht rock band due to their big hits You're The Only Woman, How Much I Feel, Biggest Part Of Me.

Agree, good music. But the "fruit salad" name didn't help things.

Back in the early 90’s there was a band in the Blues Traveler vein that I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why they didn’t catch on or at least become a little better known called The Hatter’s, John Popper helped out on their one and only album I believe. The entire band was stellar, but guitars and organ in this song exceptional, every song is good!

Nazareth- only 2 hits but a ton of good deep cuts

UFO-never huge in the US, but awesome and influential hard rock band. They're such a well kept secret that I didn't know of them until the Interwebs made it possible to hear any band you want.

Mountain-most massive guitar riff ever and lots of good non-hits

Ambrosia would always stick a couple of radio friendly ballads into their albums but everything else was some of the best prog rock anywhere particularly for an American band.

Having Alan Parsons helping out on your first 2 albums certainly helps

He put out a few awesome albums as well! Firefall was another Ambrosia type band that just cranked out solid album after solid album!
I had forgotten about Firefall. Was a fan of them as well, however Firefall was more in the country/rock genre, unlike Ambrosia.

The Shins' former bassist, Neal Langford, has died aged 50.
Neal, who co-owned hot air balloon company, IBX Balloon Flight, and was a balloon pilot, was pronounced dead on July 21, after being found in Bath Creek in South Carolina, near a private dock, WITN reports.

I don't know if they're underrated, or just not thought of anymore. Regardless, one of the most influential bands (if not the most) of the 80's:

New Order

Lead singer for Firefall was Rick Roberts formally with the Burrito Brothers. He also attended USC in the late 60’s- early 70’s. Was a member of the band Speed Limit 35 who played around town a lot in those days. Saw them many times.
