Unfortunately.....it's that time of year.

Recruiting.

This is all I have to say.

I watched Bobby Bowden's classes be ranked in the top 20 year after year during the final years of his career.

And most recently the same with Mack Brown.

If you've read the book "The System", Ricky Seals-Jones basically switched to A&M after going to a summer camp at UT and realizing the talent committed was all puffed ink.

........???? ......!!!!!

Next year is going to be very wild with three potential 5 stars in state and MSU in all of their top 2. Can you imagine Chris Jones X 3?

If we win I think it'll take care of itself.

The guy in Oxford is a bit of a puzzle to me. Although I do remember a bammer friend(actual graduate) tell me he felt the guy was a short timer because it would be a lot harder for him to make it through the league the second time around running the o he was running. So far, he's looking like he knew what he was talking about.

The 2013 Ole Miss offense was statistically better than the 2012 offense in F+. Red zone scoring percentage was the only thing that was worse, but the offense still scored more points overall due to big plays from outside the red zone. Ed Orgeron was a short timer because (among other things) he put historically awful (conventional pro style) offenses on the field for three seasons in a row. Whatever negatives Hugh Freeze has, I doubt that will ever happen.

Edit to add: I had this backwards. The offensive counting stats like points scored were better in 2013, but 2013 F+ was slightly worse (from 34 to 41). Still way better than anything Orgeron did and good enough for an overall #28 F+. MSU was #33. The teams were very close.

Only up North in Bearsville do you set the recruiting world on fire with a 6-6 regular season and blowout bowl victory.

The team is built to win now. Have a solid year next year on the field - with the better in-State talent - and the two years will average out.

How did Boise St., Houston, Vandy, etc. win recently? It wasn't on Top 20 talent, that's for sure.

Why do people continue to post as though these two facets of a program are mutually exclusive? To have a winning program you need good coaches who create chemistry and can develop talent AND get good talent (relative) to start with. If you have one or the other, you can have mixed results, but if you have both you win. Jimmy's and Joes AND x's and o's.

Name one MSU decommittment to OM who's panned out

The closest is C.J. Johnson....and he's either been suspended or injured for half his career.

all we can hope is that we keep finding diamonds in the rough. if it wasnt for our ability to evaluate talent, i would be worried, but we seem to do that consistently well. recruiting does matter...but its not all about stars. mckinney was a 2* (all sec), lewis was a 2* (all sec), malcolm johnson was a 2* (all sec), chris jones was a 2* for most of his prospect life, a bunch of o lineman that have overachieved...so there is all that, then you juxtapose that with 5*'s that have come and gone with little to no positive impact and you cant help but think that the evaluation process that recruiting sites put forward isnt the whole story on a player by a long shot. we dont have the star power, but we are getting players. i only get worried when we are in the mid 40's and on up....we usually make a late push to bump us up a half dozen spots or so. in the end, we just need bodies that can play sec football and i think we do that but we always could use some improvement. brace yourselves, there are always those ready to slit their wrists.

Did he ever commit to State, or was that in Gene Swindoll's mind?

I had heard he was from a Mississippi State family, but other than that he never committed.
