Looked like Long Johns with iron-on numbers , sew-on names, and pampers for under pants. YUK...

One thing I will never do is question Miami's ability to be the cool place for recruits to go.

You ever see the letters Miami sends out to players? They are so distinguished, as are many of the great recruiting schools out there. Unlike Rutgers' recruiting letters that go out, which are among the most boring uninspiring mail merge I've ever seen.

Miami may be a "cool" place to go and the dreaded recruiting rankings usually are very good. It doesn't show up on the field though. I think a combination of coaching and overating HS talent.

I'm not at all impressed with their disorganized mess of a "letter". But I'm also not a 17 yr old...

That's the problem in a nutshell. Need to know who the audience is. If I'm trying to recruit a hot shot 17 year old, Miami has it right. If I'm sending a cover letter for a premiums check to my insurance agent, then for something like that I like the RU letter style.

Know your audience.

Miami nailed it.

That said, I would think a formal letter from say Notre Dame or Stanford would be up there as well. Rutgers just doesn't have the juice for it.

I think this is a good point.

You have to know two things:

1. Who are we? what is our brand? And what messages reinforce that brand?

2. Who is our target audience?

We recruit Florida hard. This type of letter works with that audience. It works in the NJ metro area.

I think Notre Dame or Stanford (to borrow your examples) can play to a more understated, classic branding. But they have a century of athletic and academic excellence to back that up.

Upstarts need to take risks when trying to break into the big boy conversation.

If our current letter is a 1 and Miami's is a 10 on the flash scale, our perfect opportunity is probably in the 7/8 range.

For example, the whole 305 area code thing wouldn't play up here. And obviously we don't have 5 trophies to put on the thing. But we could weave some of the messages we sell recruits into the letter in a graphically pleasing way.

The Birthplace
FAMILY

etc.

Clearly, these conversations we're not had before settling on the letter that does go out. That's my biggest problem with the post Schiano era. There is no attention to detail whatsoever. And I would think an offer is not just some mundane detail. A lot of effort should have gone into making it an appropriate correspondence for the audience and something that might inspire them to pick Rutgers. It's the one thing they have to look at over and over again next to comparabl correspondences from the competition. There needs to be better organization and more thoughtful people involved in the organization. It is silly for us to ever criticize how Miami shapes its image. They could write a book on it.

King High nailed it. The attention to detail both on the field and off the field seems to have slipped with the present coaching staff.

I will add that the words "therefore" and "contingent upon" should be nowhere found in a f****** recruiting letter haha

Do we know what Schiano's scholarship letter looked like? I'm not saying Miami's doesn't kick ours *** but I doubt we had a really cool one and then decided to make it boring just because. It's probably the same stock letter.

The Devil is always in the details. Ask Tom Brady who was willing to risk his entire legacy over a couple of pounds per square inch.

Seems like we need a position created to improve our marketing...

Maybe we can add a "Director of Indoctrination" - why can't flood come up with this???!???
