His true colors were revealed when, after getting 6 first round draft picks after his first season, that it was the biggest accomplishment in the history of Kentucky basketball. My radar went up after that but I overlooked it because we were winning big. But it was always in the back of my mind. That comment pissed me off as it should've all Cat fans.
The first 7 or so years I went along with it, I figured it was just marketing and how his recruiting worked. He also emphasized succeed and proceed. You know win huge at Kentucky and do your part. Then go pro and live your dreams and get paid. I was fine with that. Somehow around 2018 or so it became all about players and nothing about winning here.

Facts. Although I will add his coaching acumen started showing itself in that Wisconsin 2015 game.
disagree, I think his coaching inability appeared his 1st year against WVU, when Huggy Bear threw a zone at UK & ccc had no clue how to attack it or stop their guard that abused UK the entire game. Best team in college basketball & he lost to a WVU team that was playing without their best player

Kentucky coach Rick Pitino said Wednesday that after much soul-searching, he decided not to let star guard Derek Anderson, recovering from knee surgery, play in the tournament.
"Derek has proven his point," Pitino said in San Jose, where the Wildcats play St. Joseph's in the West Regional semifinals tonight. "He's practiced three times with us, and it is obvious that he's ready to play. We'll continue to get him ready for the NBA camp in Phoenix on April 4, but we will not risk his pro career by playing him in the NCAA Tournament."
Exactly. If he said that was the biggest day and followed it with "this will bring us the absolute best, whoever we want to bring, which will keep us winning more games than anyone, going to final 4s and winning championships like we are supposed to do". Then it wouldn't have been an issue to us. But that wasn't true and he didn't say it and he now has to live with how his career started to free fall.
Exactly. Trashing a player who brings energy and ran all the way back and contested a fast break on a fractured foot for the good of UK? Not even worth entertaining.
Exactly, it was a ridiculous display. He lost so many freaking games like that too. We had 3 teams who should have won another title that he blew it with.
Of course a update on Butler and Kriisa turn into another Cal bashing thread. People just can't get him off their mind. By the way, I didn't see much of an update on Kriisa, other than he went in to the weight room. Said "it could be shorter, could be longer". WOW, WOW, what an update. Sounded a little fluffy to me. Glad to see he is in the weight room, but his foot is what i am concerned about. Until someone says "he is back on the court", I will wait patiently.

Not true. He was hungry and motivated when he came to UK. Big chip on his shoulders. Play anybody anywhere type guy. Inspirational.

I'm not sure much changed from Cal's perspective. He just never got the type of talent that could play the way he wanted and win big, and it didn't really bother him. If he missed out on any of the big recruits from the early years it wouldn't have been any different.
Your truth can be whatever you have it to be, but THE TRUTH is that Cal has been an *** everywhere he has been. He came here as a winning arrogant prick and he left as an old, lazy, and losing arrogant prick.
If Anderson was capable of playing, why wasn't he allowed to play? There is no way that RP would have kept him off the floor unless he believed he could do additional damage to his leg.

It sounds like he was protecting him from further damage to the leg. This might come as a shock to some, but that is exactly what a coach should do if he feels like the player could potentially do long term damage to his career. Kentucky should have won the game without him, but it just wasn't Kentucky's day. If RP had a history of keeping players off the court because of a hangnail or something, there would be a legitimate complaint, but there is nothing in RP's history to suggest that he unnecessarily held players out like Cal.
DOH! You are correct sir. It was like the 84 Georgetown game except it was three balls we were jacking up. The sign of a young, not very well coached team trying to get points back in a hurry. Recipe for disaster.
Not having Anderson eventually caught up to us because of our play style and the opponent imo.
Zona’s back court was loaded. I think we wore down. The foul calls were lopsided but to be fair we were struggling to keep them out of the lane and got caught reaching a lot that game.
Anderson was out, shepherd was red shirted, Edwards wasn’t 100%.
That left us with Epps, Turner and Mills in the back court and a hobbled Allen Edwards. And the game before against Minnesota was extremely physical. Our guys were holding their shorts at the end of that one.
We still beat zona if nazr hits just one free throw in regulation though. But we were clearly gassed.
