Us vs Vanderbilt football

I’ve been saying this forever because we’re not far off from Vandy with regards the the rest of the SEC historically. Vanderbilt changed their scheme approach and philosophy. Clark Lea and Tim Beck know in order to have a chance to be successful at Vanderbilt, they have to be different. As do we. Quote from the article

"We dont want to be like everybody else," Beck says. "We don’t want to run the same exact plays as everybody else, we feel like we have to be a little bit different. To turn things around here I think it’s extremely important to be different. Beck has embraced that reality as he's made an effort to overhaul Vanderbilt's offense…”

Most State fans, especially on this board, haven’t embraced the same reality yet. To be different also can include the other side of the ball that has been forgotten as well, along with every aspect of the game.

Not to mention, take advantage schematically as an underdog of the new running clock rule last year. Make the game shorter, limit the other teams possessions ect, give yourself a punchers chance.

Lea is 5-27 versus the SEC in his 4 years as head coach.

And that won’t change much no matter how long he lasts there.
The success is really about the hiring of Tim Beck. They went from 2-10 (0-8 conference) to 7-6 (3-5 conference), with close conferences losses. Lost in double overtime by 3 to Missouri. Lost by 3 to Texas. Lost by one score to LSU. But props and credit to Lea for understanding Vanderbilt’s situation and making the hire. That’s what head coaches do.

I couldn’t stand Leach. He coughed too much at press conferences.*

It’s one season. A 7-6 season. They won’t win 7 this year. Or next year. As has been said even Croom won 7 games given enough years. Lebby wont though.

What should we do? We decided to compete in the SEC for over 5 decades without giving a crap about the forward pass. That took some balls but I’d rather not re-live that philosophy.

Why dont we worry about having a good offense to start and see where that takes us? In order to compete in this league you need to be able to average 32+ ppg. Gimmicks aren’t going to get us there. We saw that with Leach. We were able to move the ball but getting in the end zone was still a problem.

We need legit QB talent and competitive RB and WR. That’s about all we can do.

They would have beat our *** last year and this year. That should be the point. Then my prediction is they’ll win 6 or 7 games and go to a bowl game again. Not to mention they’ll put up way more fight in some other games they lose. None of which I predict from us. Again, that should be the point as well.

It goes without saying they would have beat our a$$ last year. They would this year too if we played. And probably will next year if we don’t fire Lebby. But we should aspire to be better than freaking Vanderbilt.

Petrino is a pretty good weapon to have for talent evaluation/portal. Offensive coaching.

Brings some of the same skills Leach did to combat nil disadvantage

I watch their portal strategy. Smart

I hate to tell you this, but we had the best red zone offense in the SEC in 2021.

Yet we were 9th in the league in scoring. That was my point. You can nitpick the stats all you want. If you don’t score enough you don’t win in this league.

We actually scored more in 22 without having a 400 ypg team. But we should be aiming for 450ypg and a 30+ ppg. It starts with balance and a good QB. We will see what happens this year and then hope that Taylor is the answer for the future.

What’s the ultimate stat ? 9 wins in 2022

Yet we were 7-5 heading into a bowl game. I’d take that all day every day over what we have going. We were better then that we are now and have been since, because we had a coach that was outside the norm. Exactly my premise of this thread.

Where's our participation banner for "Best Red Zone Offense In the SEC" hanging? We were still 7-6 overall and 4-4 conference.
At some point you have to say being 9-4 is better than being 2-10. I mean if anything less than a National Championship is trash, then I don’t think you are ever going to be satisfied.

Only thing I can deduct after reading all this is us and Vandy are basically about the same. If Vandy finishes ahead of us again this year, then that will show the sad state that MSU football has reached.

Vandy went from 2-10 to 7-5, and was 13 points shy from going 10-2. We are not the same. They made a fundamental and physiological coaching hire last year in Tim Beck. We are still doing the same things.

Again, last year was Tim Beck’s first year.
Look man... last year was a flash in the pan. Tim Beck has historically been a terrible OC and got canned from his HC gig at Coastal so fast I didn't even notice....

Wait this is a different Tim Beck. Yea, gonna call him Timothy. Tim Beck is the guy ruining Coastal's program. I don't understand how that dude keeps getting jobs. Maybe one day Timothy will have control of the name.

7-6 isn't 9-4, especially when one of your losses is to Memphis

Yes there are two different Tim Beck’s that coach football. I get your sarcasm, but don’t confuse our people, most are dumb enough when it comes to football matters.

The majority of our people are dumb. Especially the big influencers and decision makers.
True, the bigger issue I see with our fanbase is just sheer insecurity. We want to be liked and included with top part of the SEC, when we are really nothing like them.

Croom wouldn't in this era of college FB. Anyone that tries to liken Lebby, as a first year coach, to Croom is just filled with ignorance. Nothing about Croom or his teams resembled competence. He had so much more talent on his teams over the years than Lebby had last year and at any point in his career did anyone ever think he or his teams looked competent. When a coach is hired at the transfer portal deadline and the players from the previous year gone to the portal, what did you expect? Last year sucked and this year may also, but I'd bet we look way more like a FB team than anything Croom put on the field.

It is gonna be tough. We got better through the portal & NIL, but so did everyone else.

It's a sliding scale.....and we are on the wrong end of it.

Again, there is one way to crawl out of this. For us at Mississippi State to realistically balance the scales back out, we are going to have to be different.

I wrote the first half of my response before i went and hit checked myself. Left it like that for other people to recognize there's two of me and Vandy might have a good one.

We’re what 9-23 over the same period? Clearly we have advantages over Vandy though. But we’re much closer to them than to Texas.
I get your point but why is everyone using texas as the bar in the SEC now?

Its alabama, georgia, lsu until texas proves otherwise.

Fair enough. Texas is just top right now and have the resources to be there a long time.

Definitely have the resources but i'd say they aren't even at the top right now. They always get tons of preseason hype and their schedule was a joke last year.
