UT @ UM: What opponent in Davis Wade would create same buzz? Saints, Cowboys....

Packers, 49ers?

I'm honestly having a difficult time buying into all of the hype of this game for multiple reasons.

1) Texas is not even a relevant team when talking about national title contenders. Given, when the game was scheduled, UT was a national contender and battling Oklahoma for Big 12 Supremacy, but the past 2 years they have been irrelevant in the college football landscape (but so have the bears) even missing a bowl in 2010.

2) Texas has clearly much more talent and depth than UM and should put them away easily. Who exactly have the bears beaten and they haven't exactly looked dominant, especially against a Southland Conference opponent?

3) The allure of the grove and UM is overhyped and much overrated. To make a huge deal about the UT fans all flying in on their private jets and overloading the Oxford airport is ridiculous. Their fans do this for every game they play. They are the wealthiest university in North America. To say they are flying in to tailgate in the Grove is a stretch. I've tailgated at just about every SEC school (not UK or Vandy) and I can honestly admit that Tuscaloosa and Athens tailgate scenes blow the grove out of the water. Still don't understand the allure of tailgating half a county away from the stadium, but then again when your fans care about the tailgate more than the game it somewhat makes sense.

I live in New Orleans now and have met numerous people from numerous universities and states and they all have the biggest misconceptions of grove and UM as a whole. The perception amongst people who've never been to or experienced UM or Oxford is simply mind boggling. When you speak to someone who has been there, they will tell you that the actual place is much different than that which they had envisioned.

The same goes for Starkville as well. People think it's a one horse, stop sign town. But after they visit they cannot believe that it's nothing like what they see or heard in various media outlets.

I think the Horns win this one easily, and the Vaught is cleared out by halftime.

I have to agree about the grove.....

It's not tailgating if you can't fire up a grill. It's a picnic.

I go a few times a year when we have away games and it's really not that different from any other tailgate I've been to. They just make a big deal because the get overdressed and the tailgate is centered a round some trees. The only difference between the junction and the grove is more trees. I concluded that I get just as drunk in both places.

I think it's mainly two things.

1. It's pretty much the only "game in town" this weekend for Mississippi as far as the colleges go with us going to Troy, so I guess they expect a bigger than usual crowd and probably will get a few MSU alums who either want to watch or have spouses that are Mississippi fans and would otherwise go to Starkville or Hattiesburg.

2. They are desperate for any kind of excitement and relevance regarding football. Now, that may mean creating their own. Sort of like recruiting rankings.

Texas has a pretty big walk-on faction- even in Mississippi I'm sure. I know I've seen a few burnt orange Texas car decals here and there in Jackson. The biggest thing that sort of amazes me is that they seem happy that Texas fans are taking over their town. I hate it when Tennessee came to Starkville and parked in all of the Bulldog Club parking under LT back in the day, and I hated it when Tim Tebow's cult members showed up, and I hated it when LSU fans show up en masse and poop everywhere. When I go to Starkville, I want to be around my MSU family. Now that we've gotten better, the opponent takeovers have gotten a lot better.

There is nothing special about Ole Miss, the grove, or the square. These people want everyone to think they have something better than everyone else. They have done a masterful job of promoting this. They also would have you believe their school is the "Harvard of the South"; however, we know this is far from the truth. Tell the same lie long enough and even you will start to believe it.

I don't think the relevance is the game..it's the pregame party that started....

...last night. My guess is that a bunch of drunken Bear fans and drunken t-sips have embarked on a 90-hour lost weekend that we'll be hearing about from blogs and message board rumors for years to come.

Oklahoma, USC, Notre Dame, Texas, Michigan, pre-downfall Penn State, Stanford, Miami, etc.

Anyone thinking Starkville would not be hyping a night game at home with Texas this weekend is not being honest with themselves. We'd be telling everyone how the perception of our one horse town was about to change after they experience the junction, campus, and an improved town.

Texas

I hate to say it but they have a media following unlike almost any other school. People still talk about the MSU-Texas game when Jackie was here. Sometimes for other reasons but it's still discussed.

What? You can't be serious? The Grove bans grills? Hahahaha that is ridiculous. The Junction is better just by that alone. You can't win best tailgating scene if you can't grill. Just can't. This is so Ole Miss. Thank you for this, this just made my day. Hahaha Dudy Noble is better than the Grove now.

It's simple math...

The grove has grass and trees.
My backyard has grass and trees.

Therefore, my backyard = the grove.

Um, only OMU people are hyping it. Nobody else really cares...

about a ranked team playing the worst team in the SEC.
