This may be a dumb question, but why does Virginia use the abbreviation "UVA"? Alabama doesn't use UAL, Mississippi doesn't use UMS, Florida doesn't use UFL, etc....so what the 17 is the "A" for? Are they a directional school or something?*

I believe you need to reread the question. The directional states get a pass for their abbreviations are two words (USC, UNC, NCState, etc.)
