All of us have our own personal inner-struggles. I can't imagine having to wear those struggles on my sleeve to a national audience every single day. Most of the time we all forget these are just kids.
Indeed, it’s a nice piece but i couldn’t help but think of all the crap that Grayson had to bear while at Duke while reading it. Regardless of whether or not he brought some of it on himself he’s just a kid.

You see a guy with one leg, and immediately think "poor man." But you can't see what goes on inside someone's head. I used to not think anxiety or depression were fully real.

Knowing how to deal with anyone that battles mental issues can be just as challenging.

I think all the points everyone made are excellent. I guess I wondered why we had chosen Guy to harass with the UMBC kid in the crowd for the Cavs game at Cameron. Sure I remember him burying his face in his jersey, etc....Obviously his situation was more traumatic as he carried it with him. Hes had his own demons to deal with from it, death threats, etc....

However after reading and processing this piece I can't help but feel a bit sorry for the kid considering the "welcome" we've planned for him.To Guy's credit I have to say kudos for the way hes embracing the challenge, and I hope it doesnt bite us in the rear.

Btw, the references to Grayson are very much on target. That young man went thru awful chants, signs, etc after his actions at Duke. However I think he is stronger for it today....Thanks-

I can't help but to see a few similarities between Guy (UMBC), and Bobby Hurley (UNLV) about their struggles after a humiliating loss.
I hope Guy is able to keep his life in perspective, and finds peace...but when he and the Hoos meet Duke, I want us to squash them all.

Dirt ME TOO on the "squashing." I just hope Guy DOESN'T go off on us and lead Cavs to win due to ADDED INCENTIVE! OFC

I hope he doesn't either, Hart.

One thing I'm a little quizzical about is why someone (Guy) who seems to have some type of mental toughness problem would address the Crazies stunt (of bringing the UBMC player to Cameron) by trying to exhibit bravado by donating money to the fund to bring the player. He better hope that he (and UVA) play well, because if they don't he probably escalated that mental shitstorm to a CAT 5. If you can talk the talk you better be able to walk the walk.

Dirt great point. I am only thinking hes trying to embrace it as part of his therapy/strategy to overcome his demons. Dirt, I am no doctor just merely thinking out loud from reading the piece. However your reference is very much probable.....OFC

Yeah, you could be right, Hart. I think I would keep my mouth shut, and if things went well...then take a victory lap around Cameron, and perhaps throw an autographed cap (or two) toward the Crazies and the UBMC player. But that's just me.

My friend I think that WOULD be the best philosophy. Just hope he doesnt get to take the "victory lap," and hoping this situation somehow diffuses itself prior to the actual game. OFC

I'm sure Kyle Guy is a nice kid based on what we read but also feel Grayson had it much harder getting through his career at Duke than Klye has had at UVa since last seasons loss. Grayson was the most hated player on probably the most disliked team in the country because his on court antics and emotional collapses and I would think he had many death treats from non Duke fans across the country. Kyle sounds like he has it pretty well figured out though and that UMBC loss will become less and less dramatic to him each year. Im watching the UVa-FSU game an don't look foward to having to face his shooting when Duke plays Uva.

I’m watching the UVA/FSU game too and he killed it from 3 in the first half.

Good story. Anxiety and depression issues in "every day" people are way too under the radar in our society. Lots of people we all know and admire/respect suffer without our awareness.
