I suppose the home team always can set up the field to their own advantage. Remember how Kentucky used to (and perhaps still do) cut the grass really high to slow the other teams down? And I recall it working to an extent too. 3-4" Bermuda grass can be pretty thick and slick too when wet.
But I'm with you on artificial turf. I don't like it at all, although it looks good to the fans from the seating areas. The new softer stuff is much better than the old, hard-as-concrete AstroTurf though. There is no choice with a permanently closed domed field. And I understand that some NFL teams ... the Packers for one ... have sort of a hybrid where they interweave fake grass in with the natural Bluegrass.
