I don’t understand why they are trying to assign him to a different position so he can’t leave. Why would they want to pay out the contract and pay another coach? Is the buyout that much?

Yeah that makes NO sense. That’s going to cause drama city down there. If you have the gonads to fire someone you then don’t say “well wait a minute....” and reassign them elsewhaere to cause trouble.

Man that's cold blooded. I thought they would give him one more year but nope. I can see a case for him being fired but I thought boy wonder would definitely charmed his way and convinced Vandy for one more year.

Dude went 16-38 in SEC play in 3 seasons. 10 of those 16 wins came in his first season there. [laughing]

Yeah. But it’s Vandy. You’re a wonderful academic school. If you expect to compete on the level with UK and Florida while you are a smallish private school you’re kinda delusional. Only private school that truly competes on a national level consistently is Duke. And that’s only in basketball and only because of K.

Villanova ... Duke is not the only school.

How 'bout this snarky tweet from UNCcheat apologist and Dook slurper Bilas?
Damn Jay Bil is feeling like a King these days - His righteous opinion for everyone. Stay in your lane bro....

UNC - wrong opinion. DUKE houses Zion's family - nothing. Kansas and Self - nope. Arizona and Miller - nah. Small SEC school firing a coach who goes winless in conference play - "THE SEC AND VANDY SUCK AND SHOULD BE THE BANE OF ALL COLLEGE BASKETBALL - THE VANDYS OF THIS WORLD ARE THE PROBLEM WITH COLLEGE BASKETBALL".

Asshat.

Vandy Baseball is tremendous and Stanford is great at almost every sport besides basketball. And Notre Dame football is okay. Elite academic private schools can compete. Just REALLY hard in football.

You have to have the right combination. Stanford plays in the PAC-12. Which of course recently is not all that good. Notre Dame doesn’t count for consistency mainly because they should pick a dang conference lol.

And you have to have the right coach like K or Wright.

School size counts too. Stanford and Duke are larger schools than Vandy. Nova is half their size though. Which I was kinda shocked tbh. Nova has only 6500 students, I mean just dang. Talk about small.

Regardless, Vandy is in a very sports heavy conference. Much like Duke. I just don’t see them able to compete on a consistent basis.

why in the world would they give a coach another year who had a historically bad run?

Does anyone think Bryce Drew has a final four in his future if Vandy retained him for another year? Another 5 years?

The players quit on him. Admittedly the AD should have met with him very early into his job, but that really has no bearing on a coach that needs to go. Its unfortunate but if you go 0-18 in the SEC you aren't going to make a case about how they can't get anyone better.

I would bet money they paid for Shittu and probably Garland. Shittu begged for an offer from UK but we never did. Same scenario with Naz Reid and we know what they were doing. Garland chose Vandy over Duke and they have been buying players families million dollar homes for years. I’m sure he went to Vandy for the education lol.

I mean, I see both sides of it.

You can't have a season with no SEC wins and plan to keep your job.
On the flip side, he's gotten talent there. You lose a lottery pick and you almost can't expect to have a good season.

Lastly, who do they get? It's Vanderbilt. Who wants to be there?

What would be funny to me--is if they call up Avery Johnson and have a better next few years than Alabama.

So Vandy’s AD has had the job less than two months, has never even met with Drew to set expectations, and just fired the guy.

Either the new AD is a boss from Hell or Drew has been found cheating or something.

I know if I’d been fired by a boss I’d never even had a meeting with Id be pretty ticked.
I agree. Drew's successor is going to demand a big severance package or a provision that allows firing only for certain causes, or both. Of course, Vandy could hire a coach so young or bad that s/he will take the job under any terms.
This situation is like, but less severe than, Martelli being fired at St. Joe's 2 days ago. He was there for 35 years (head coach for 24) and put St. Joes on the national stage.
Martelli had the last perfect regular season before Wichita had one in 2013-14. Jill Bodensteiner became AD last March and fired Martelli 2 days ago. He's 64 and was 1 year away from retirement. He did just have 2 mediocre/crummy seasons. She said he was fired because the school wants to build on its "glorious program and storied history." They funny part is, Martelli IS that history. It seems far more likely that is not the real reason.
When jill bodensteiner was hired, she said that she wanted to put her stamp on the athletics programs. Clearly, firing Martelli in this manner sends a message to everyone who is in charge. She may also be the insecure type, who wants those under her to be beholden to her, which Martelli clearly was not. Then too, jill is a 40+ year old homosexual, and she may hate old, white, traditional family men.
I diverged on this tangent because when firings seem really suspicious, personal animosity, greed for power or misconduct are usually the hidden causes.

IMO it has nothing to do with 0-18 this year in the SEC. If they had won a couple, how would that have made a difference.

Something else involved ( not necessarily improprieties) and it may never be known.

With all the jobs opening up, maybe they just wanted to get their hat in the ring, especially with RP wanting to make a comeback.:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

If Rick Jr wins another game at Minn he may be on someone's radar.

That is a good question, the same could be said for Alabama,TAM or several other SEC schools.

Sure.

That's the tough part with a lot of these names being brought up to go from Power 5 school to power 5 school. I guess MN is cold and sucks. But I'm not sure Vanderbilt is a place Lil Ricky is going to put on the map.

Same thought for me with Prohm to Alabama--I think Iowa State is a little bit more of a basketball school. Going home is nice and all, but you're putting yourself in a tougher position to succeed IMO.

Here's the problem when a new Athletic Director comes in they want to put there own people in there they don't want to be stuck with the old coaches from previous regime it usually happens all the time.

I'm a Valpo grad, so I have a little admitted Drew family bias, but I just can't imagine Bryce having any involvement in anything wonky regarding recruiting. I don't think the guy even swears. When you see him at his bench clapping and smiling and trying to be positive with his kids, that's just who he is. When he gets in front of a microphone to talk about his firing, he will be 100% positive. Class guy and great role model.
