I think Johnson was paid ~$1M/yr. I guess there only options are retread or young coordinator.

I don't know if pay scale would be an issue with that, but I wonder...<div>
</div><div>Other than that, I could see them hiring a young coordinator at a Big East/ACC school or something to that nature. </div>

That a team called the Commodores would hire a guy that is into pirates.

It has been done before- England hired Sir Francis Drake to take down the Spanish Armada in the 1500's, and that worked out pretty well.

You can probably get him on the cheap if he is wanting to get back into coaching. However, I'm sure his "baggage" will scare off Vandy. They'll probably hire somebody that's done a respectable job at some obscure D2 school.

What about Malzahn? Is he destined for bigger and better things than Vandy? If AU is as in deep **** as many say they are, the timing could be set up nicely for Vandy to offer $1M/yr and him take it. That would be a stretch though...

Vandy is used to winning 2-3 games a year- got to be something to all this with Johnson's abrupt resignation, and now Caldwell being let go (and yes, I know the Johnson rumor, just seems like more now)

Vandy has the largest endowment I think in the SEC...the school and the athletic program have money to pay someone if they want to- I just think Vandy realizes when it comes down to it, they really can't compete with the top of the SEC- and is not going to waste money on paying a big salary

"One and done" doesn't make much sense unless this was pre-determined prior to Caldwell's hiring...and I still fail to see the logic there.

I concur that there may be some underlying circumstances (which may very well be innocuous). I hope that it is not a health-related departure.

he knows the Yellawood is getting ready to splinter. If he feels AU is going down, this may be the best parachute available this year.

I'm not sure how Northwestern manages to compete in the Big 10, but they are the program you have to study if you are Duke or Vandy trying to turn things around.

Another year of putting up 500 yards/game as an SEC team and you have to think Malzahn could land something better than Vandy. Maybe not this year, but in the short term. If these talks are serious, I'm just going to interpret that as a precursor to Auburn getting hammered by the NCAA and Malzahn is getting out while the getting is good. Might be a stretch, but it makes for a good conspiracy theory for now...

If there's a Harvard in the SEC it is Vandy. They have high admission standards and I'm not real sure they offer basket weaving 'n ****.

Wonder if not being able to recruit Jerrel Powes is going to limit who wants to coach there. Well that and the lack of commitment to the football program.

Here's a blurb from footballscoop.com. I know, not reliable, but worth a look nonetheless.

Vanderbilt: Vanderbilt has announced that Robbie Caldwell will step aside after today's game against Wake Forest. Our sources tell us that Miami Dolphins quarterbacks coach David Lee and Miami (FL) offensive coordinator Mark Whipple are interested in the job. We have been hearing that Vanderbilt has interest in Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn and former Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden. Another source tells us that Houston head coach Kevin Sumlin would not be interested in the position.

Sumlin's next job could be at a middle of the road AQ school with better upside than Vandy, so I doubt he wants to go to Vandy. But I think the wrong Bowden was mentioned in this article. I think Terry Bowden might love to get a shot at Vandy. He's at UNA now, he's familiar with the SEC and being close to Nashville I'm sure familiar with the area in recruiting, and for a guy like him that wants to get back to a good program, turning Vandy into something more than a doormat would look really good for him.

I think ultimately Vandy would love to pull a youngSEC coordinator, but I think that these guys in the SEC know Vandy is not the place to start out your HC career if you are young because the cons outweigh the pros. I wouldgo ahead and say the Vanderbilt job is one of the 5 toughest jobs to have success atin the country. They've been to 4 bowl games in their entire career. That's just terrible.

I would take that as evidence that the hammer is coming down at Auburn and he's getting the hell out of dodge before the stink gets on him too.

I agree. Vandy is an absolute deadend job. The article below ran in the Tennessean just 2 weeks ago. Their best head coach in my lifetime, Bobby Johnson, was 29-66 overall, 12-52 in the SEC. That's just unbearable for any coach who has aspirations past being HC at Vanderbilt. They'll either get a no-name guy or a desperate guy. I could see Terry Bowden or Mike Leach getting a look, but in the end they'll probably make a less controversial hire and get some coordinator we've never heard of.
