If he thinks he's still healthy enough to play, he should transfer somewhere where he can play. He's getting a free 4-year ride in college and doesn't have to do anything to get it. It's not like Saban is leaving him in a bad situation here.

Take the medical and get a free education for doing nothing or transfer to another school and play there. I sure he would release them from the scholly just the same....

He is still getting his education paid for. He better hope he doesn't piss off Saban to where he says "OK, you don't think this is fair, well, we'll just take your scholarship away and you can pay your own way through school".

If he felt like he could play somewhere else, and beat SEC schools, he could go to Jacksonville State.

Also, I would take Jeramie Griffin right now if he still wanted to play football, bad knee and all.

I've never paid attention to this and don't feel like reading the NCAA manual - I'll ask here:

Let's say Mullen wants to cut Brauchle because he's terrible at kickoffs and we found somebody else that's going to do the job better next year. Do we get to use his now open scholarship for any player (incoming or current) of our choosing? And if so, is that limited to a certain number of occurrences each year? I was thinking scholarships are renewed on an annual basis, but am not sure how that affects the program should they decide not to renew and cut a player.

I don't care about the individual players - they can cry me a river while getting their free education - they wouldn't be playing regardless even if they haven't been cut. They should be grateful they are remaining on some sort of scholarship and if they miss playing that much, then transfer to UAB. However, if this allows Saban to skirt around other scholarship regulations, then I'd have a problem with that.

They can still only sign 25/year. So, either he can cut their no-talent sorry *** outright, and the kid doesn't get ****, or he can "gift" them a medical RS to keep a scholly.

Obviously, this POS should have just been cut outright.

they do this so they can get around the 85 limit. Its Saban's way of gaining an advantage if other teams aren't as willing to do it.

What sounds better to a recruit: 1) "If you can't cut it at Alabama,
you can always transfer to another school"; or 2) "If you can't cut it
at Alabama, we can still arrange for you to get a full scholarship with a
free education and all the other perks of an athletic scholarship?"

What makes this seems so fishy is the combination of over-signing with
the use of these medical hardship scholarships. It is one thing for a
kid to get injured, be placed on medical scholarship, and then have his
football scholarship given to a new recruit the next season. It seems a
little different when the school oversigns by 10 to 15 players, and
then hands out these medical hardship scholarships to get back under the
limit.

He may be doing it more often and more publicly, but it happens at pretty much every school.

then its absolutely an advantage. Im not ready to assume that all schools are completely misusing the med scholarship. I don't believe we have. If Im reading correctly, the article says the SEC schools have used it 25 times in 3 years and that 12 of those are Bama.
