Very OT: But an interesting spontaneous science experiment I just did

I just went to the office breakroom to heat up my lunch and noticed that when I put my Tupperware container in the microwave that fly just flew in. After a few moments the fly refused to exit the microwave so I decided he sealed his own fate and closed the door and set the timer to two minutes. When the microwave dinged I opened the door and to my surprise the fly exited the microwave as if nothing was wrong. I now thing we may need to add flies in with cockroaches as the animals that could survive a nuclear attack. Oh, and if you start hearing reports of mutant flies 20 feet long around the Golden Triangle area you now know the cause.

Microwave ovens work by causing water molecules to vibrate....

...which causes friction which generates heat which causes the food to cook. Microwave ovens have 'cold' spots where the waves do not reach very well which is why almost all have a rotating or moving tray. My guess is the relatively tiny fly happened to land and fit comfortably within one of these cold spots maybe upside down at the top of the unit as the magnetron is positioned to direct the microwaves onto the bottom tray. Thus the fly did not heat up and survived the experience. Has little to do with how tough they are to kill.

It was actually on the door near the bottom. I knew they caused the water molecules to vibrate which is why I thought I had a better than average chance of watching his little butt explode.

I had a somewhat similar experience. I shut the microwave door on a fly

and when I opened it, Jeff Goldblum walked out, seemingly none the worse for wear.

I nuked some ants in a microwave recently, they were walking around normal the whole time and afterwards as well.

I will tell you though, I had an Oscar (fish) one time that was as big as a large bluegill and i came home from work one day and he was floating upside down but still flipping around. I decided to put him out of his misery and dropped him in a butter tub and set it for 1 minute. I don't think he lasted 30 seconds till I heard a sound like you had dropped a tomato off a 5 story building when it hits the ground. Opened the container and it looked like a tomato that had been dropped from a 5 story building too.

And that's why we have engineers. And some people thought Napoleon Dynamite was merely a movie character.
