But shouldn't a goalie be prepared to take a hard shot to the face? Looks like if he hadn't flinched he might have blocked that shot. Maybe he would have broken his nose, but isn't that his job?

I have seen similar flinching by non-goalies who could have helped block a shot but instead protected their face or body. But I expect a goalie to just nut up and take the hit.

There was nothing that keeper could do. You can't exactly practice taking point blank shots in the face so youcondition yourselfnot to flinch. Even if he had stopped that shot, he would have had to come out of the game because there'd have been blood all over him, not to mention that it might have knocked him out cold.

with an emphasis on the word tried- to use his hands to knock it away. I would have been really impressed if he took it off of his face and was still standing. That would mean he is one badass Slovenian.

I have taken a soccer ball off of my face before at close range- it didn't feel very good. And this was off of the foot of one of my friends- not a pro like Donovan who I imagine could kick a ball a lot harder.

He just didn't have nearly enough time to react. He probably had something like 0.03 seconds to react to that shot before it was past him.

And anyway, he could have taken it in the ear. I know it would have sucked, but I just figured that was his job.

No keeper in the World woulda saved that shot. Point blank, crank into the top of the goal...I don't think so. And yes it was going at least 70mph maybe close to 90ish.

what a bunch of gay posts. yes he should have made a better effort. of course you put your face in front of any ball at the world cup or in any top level games. what the hell. hockey players put their teeth in front of 150 mph FRIGGAN HOCKEY PUCKS. Keepers should be conditioned to flinch toward the ball, not away from it. I'm not saying the guy should have made the save, but the first thing you notice about the play is how shirked away from the ball like a dam coward. a broken nose aint **** compared to advancing out of group play in the world cup, which is what that goal may have meant for them. you put your body in position to cover the largest area of space, hoping, praying that the ball will crush your dome rather than going in the goal.

the main thing he should have done differently is come out on the ball and not stood there like an idiot waiting before the firing squad. it was a break away situation. donovan might have passed it to another for a goal, but you have to take away the path of least resistance. thats like getting scored on near post.

nothing but ****** goal keepers in this world cup. its embarrassing the level of play thats been going on in goal. dude from japan just got made to look foolish a little while ago on a relatively easy save.

and another thing, the only reason donovan got off such a crank was because they let him come right up and just tee off. the ball would not have had near as much on it had the keeper forced the shot earlier.

I bet Medearis is some fat out of shape 15 year old who thinks everyone is a ***** even though he has never put himself in one of these situations he just described.

He adjusted closer to the post when he saw help coming, and he had the near post covered up with his body. If he didn't have any help, you would have seen him go prone as Donovan moved into the box. Donovan just located perfectly...if he shot any lower, the keeper's body would have gotten a piece of it. I don't know if you played any soccer or not, Medearis, but that ball is traveling a hell of a lot faster than it looks. I played keeper for years but don't think I'd be man enough to take on a point blank blast from a pro. The Slovenian keeper did about all he could.

And you might be a grizzled veteran of the pitch, I don't know. It's kind of like watching a curve ball or a changeup on TV to where it looks somewhat predictable and easy to hit, but the best batters in the world routinely whiff on them. A shot on goal is rarely a straight shot, or at least it wasn't when I played. It bends and dips and never comes off the grass like you think it will. The grass doesn't slow the ball down, either. The cameras are very deceiving in that regard...I can't imagine what those shots look like to a World Cup keeper on the field.
