Never happened before. Brewers manager coached at Arizona St. but he had been in the minors 15 years before being named Brewers manager. Vitello is the first.

Dick Howser left Florida State to manage the Yankees in '80.

Howser had been Yankees 3rd base coach for 10 years, then their manager in 1978. Went to FSU for 1 year after he was fired. Then went back to Yankees in 1980. So technically, he went from D1 to MLB. But not the same.
