It wasn't an easy win, but Louisville Volleyball prevailed and took a five set match over host Arizona State last night in Tempe. 25-15, 24-26, 25-17, 24-26, 15-11 was the set results, as Louisville got 18 kills from Assumption sophomore Anna DeBeer. She was one of five in double-figure kill numbers.
It came down to the crucial fifth set for the Cards, who were plagued by service errors all night. Louisville had to endure a late rally from the Sun Devils before winning 15-11 in the fifth set. UofL held a 9-3 lead midway through the final set and Arizona State had already burned both timeouts. UofL went up 13-8 but had trouble sealing the deal as ASU got within three at 14-11. A kill by DeBeer gave the Cards the 3-2 win as Louisville stays undefeated after the opening weekend.
DeBeer was named to the All-Tournament team and Tournament MVP honors for the three wins for the Cards. Joining her on the All-Tournament team was Anna Stevenson and Amaya Tillman.
This was a good, early road test for the VolleyCards. #13 Louisville was the only ranked team among the four participants, but got tough tests from Cal Poly and ASU.
UofL hosts the Cardinal Invitational next weekend, with Northern Kentucky, South Dakota and Missouri opening the home slate in L&N Federal Credit Union Arena
