[h=4]I don't care if State wins the CWS every year....[/h]

as long as we have a better football and basketball
program than they do. College baseball is insignificant IMO and to about 98% of
the population in this country.

[h=4]Re: I don't care if State wins the CWS every year....[/h]

i agree with you totally.

i don't think it
SHOULD be this way, but even if they win the college world series, our
recruiting class is a bigger story than their national championship. people
across the country know the names nkemdiche, tunsil, treadwell, connor, and
golson. few people outside of starkville know rea, holder, renfroe, graveman,
or pollorena.

again, i don't think that's how it should be, but that's
how it is.

that said, as little as i care for baseball, i want us to be
competitive and win everything.

[h=4]Agreed....[/h]

It's not how it should be, but it just is.

I
want us to be competitive in everything too, I just care way, way, way, way,
way, way, way more about football and basketball. And so does just about every
other single sports fan in the country.

It really cracks me up how bent
out of shape people round here get about baseball. My theory is that it's the
only thing they have been able to hang their hat on as an Ole Miss fan from so
many years of sucking in football and basketball.

You're right Beard, my
interests are football, basketball, and then baseball. That said I would sure
like our baseball team to be a big winner every year. We have put a lot of time
and money into the program and should get better results. Omaha or bust next
year.

I would say Mike Bianco and the baseball Rebels have been
more than just competitive.

Spoiled babies around here think that if
you build a nice stadium and pony up for some expensive box seats for baseball,
you are automatically granted a championship team. Not so.

If the administration shares the opinion of the main
sponsors of this thread, I think that the potential season ticket holders in
baseball should be notified that we have officially de-emphasized baseball.
That's only fair, don't you think?

Please note that whatever I have posted
above is of extremely small importance in the grand scheme of things. As my

distant 3rd. I still go to games in basketball and have
for a very long time, but my expectations are still the same in hoops as when I
saw Coolidge Ball many years ago during the Weltlich days when I was in college.

Of course, my expectations for baseball are not very high either the
last few years so baseball and basketball are about even on my expectation
scale!

[h=4]the point here is not personal preference[/h]

that's not what this is about.

i don't think the
university should "de-emphasize" baseball, or football, or basketball, or track,
or anything else. i want ole miss to strive to be the absolute best it can be
at every team it fields. i want ole miss to strive to be the best it can be in
everything it does - academically, athletically, whatever.

i fully
understand that some people like baseball more than basketball or football.
again - that's fine. personal preference is a wonderful thing.

the
point is that nationally, baseball isn't that big of a deal anymore. college
baseball especially isn't that big of a deal. no idea why this is, but you
don't have to look hard at all to see it.

if state wins the college
world series, good for them. it will be a great accomplishment and a feat
worthy of respect. it also will not be as big of a deal as college football
recruiting. it will not be as big of a deal as the NCAA men's basketball
tournament.

yes, it sucks to see them win, and it sucks especially for
the ole miss fans that love baseball. but very few people will notice.

If college baseball is insignifiant, why do we draw
larger crowds in baseball than we do in basketball? That happens often when the
baseball team is competitive. I think you are underestimating how many people
care about baseball. I will admit that many more people care about football and

Since the bears don't care about baseball they should make it a club sport.

We should ask Oregon State how they got Oregon to get rid of baseball in 1982.

I like how some in the thread they say they care a lot more about basketball. Apparently not enough to patch the roof of their facility though. Keep spinning.

Poor delirious bastards. If you keep telling yourself something long enough

you'll eventually start to believe it's true. They are in absolute denial. Here's something else, their basketball program hasn't passed us. One season doth not a program make. Matter o' fact, I'll take it one step further and say that we will be the better team again starting next year.

Funniest thing I have read all day. I guess that is why 95% of TSUN fans were wanting Bianco fired after their season ended. Everyone of those sweaters tied around their neck, loafers without socks wearing egotistical, self righteous, holier than thou pricks would trade places with us in an instant if they could.

These are two quotes from the thread suggesting that if State wins an actual, on-the-field national championship, it will still be less impressive than a ranking of HS players who have signed letters of intent to maybe play for Ole Miss at some point in the future. Amazing.

You can buy recruits in football, but you can't buy wins in baseball...

...so they probably won't ever make it to Omaha. (I hope this burns deep.)

Also, Marshall Henderson is a turd.

I met some folks the other day that were introduced to me as big Ole Miss fans. I told them I had to get home to watch my team play in the CWS...to which they immediately reminded me how great their recruiting class was, and it was MUCH better than ours. Well, congrats 17ers, on that huge accomplishment. Hang a banner.

This did give me a god laugh.

I'm so glad I didn't grow up in the late 50's-early 60's when these loudmouths actually had a top 5 football program. I bet I would have had to dig my own eardrums out with a rusty spoon to drown out all their pompous boasting. People say LSU and Alabama has the worst fans, but I think Ole Miss has the worst, especially in the rare occurance (Eli's Senior Year) when they have some tangible success to talk about. I'm glad my Dad and Grandpa made the swap from Rebel to Bulldog fans back in the late 70's before I was born...

Hilarious -- one decent season -- in which the stars aligned for them to run to the Elite 8 and they still shat the bed in the round of 32 and they suddenly "care" about basketball? But we have a good year and they are average and they suddenly don't care about baseball?

I think most of us, and most of them too, agree that football is the number one sport by far. But I don't see how they can honestly think that a football recruiting class can even come close to the actual accomplishment of a national championship in one of the big 3 sports. I don't think they do.

And their FB season wasn't all that successful ... 7-6 as I recall. That's not really very good. Do they base success on one single game as some of us do? Maybe they do, but I'd consider a win over Alabama much larger than a win over Ole Miss ... that is, until that recruiting class turns them into another Alabama-type powerhouse. **

Since when does Ole Miss care one damn bit about basketball? Definition of fairweather fans.

Look, baseball is my least favorite of the 3 so I get where they're coming from, but whether they want to say it or not MSU winning the CWS is a big deal. We'd be the only team in Mississippi to win a national championship in any team sport (yeah, I'm not counting those 3 football championships... they never finished better than #2) and the legacy of this team would kick their door down in any "Ole Miss is better than MSU" elementary argument for anything.

Let me repeat: No Mississippi team has ever won a national title game.

But they're right... not a whole lot of people care about college baseball. Exactly 0 give a **** about recruiting championships though.

I worked in NYC and my entire office congratulated me on my alma mater getting such an impressive recruiting class... because they saw Ole Miss on TV, ESPN.com, and twitter. Had no clue what a recruiting class was, but saw it was a big deal. Thought Ole Miss was Mississippi State. These are people who are huge fans of BC football and a bunch of fancy pants school. It's not like they don't know what college football is, it's just that the southeast is the ONLY SEGMENT OF THE WORLD WHO CARES!

I read RebelGrove last night after our game. 11 of the first 15 threads on the page were about MSU being in Omaha. Believe it or not, some of the posters there are actually rooting for us. Then there are the stupid ones...and they have some really stupid ones.

This thread shows a mix of both. Enjoy.

Some of you need to wake up and realize its real.

They've positioned themselves in the cat-bird seat to win a National Championship in one of the 3 major sports.

Bianco just doesn't have that special thing that taps into kids ability to play at their highest level when it counts the most. Solid coach, but doesn't know how to use the pressure.

That's funny because a few years ago I was reading post after post on this board from Rebel fans about how they didn't care about basketball, just football and baseball. Guess whatever is convenient

So true, just a few years ago they were a Baseball school.
They got lucky one year in basketball, we could easily have a better SEC record than them next year, Henderson can't score 60 every game.
They won 1 out of the last 4 Egg Bowls, and I don't see huge success coming this year for them either in football.
But Hey, keep on counting those Recruiting Championships...Congrats..

I think its a MSU fan's duty to pull against Ole Miss...

and vice versa, but must admit my animosity is not as hot in baseball as in other sports. I may pull against the team, but really only want them to do worse than us. In other sports, I want them to utterly fail. I also appreciate the quality of a good team when they have one and feel no ill will toward any individual player, often following and pulling for those guys that get to the majors.

Most of the ones that I'm close with align more with the Rebelgrove perspective...

They respect our run -- may not be pulling for us, but aren't really pulling against us -- but it makes them sick to see the intangible difference between us and them...

This is my favorite post. Comes from the dumbest poster in OMSpirit history.....FearTheBeard." "if state wins the college
world series, good for them. it will be a great accomplishment and a feat
worthy of respect. it also will not be as big of a deal as college football
recruiting
. it will not be as big of a deal as the NCAA men's basketball
tournament."

I think that about sums UM's ideology up right there. Myth > Real life...
