Was OM so confident that Lane was staying

I would say naive. Because they actual thought he might stay.

As a result Carter was too scared to interview others in fear of forcing Kiffin into the decision to leave. Carter screwed up not picking up the subtle hints of........a contract going unsigned for months.... and moving forward with a plan.

I think Carter had to know he was gone. But couldn’t really do anything about it until he left. I think he thought he had Sumrall lined up. But when he got the Florida offer it was an easy choice. Then Carter panicked. No reason to name Golding as permanent so soon. Could have easily made him interim then tried to make a “real” hire. And fall back to him if nothing better was available. There was no danger of losing him as an assistant.

As weird as it sounds, I almost wish Auburn had won the Iron Bowl to send OM to Atlanta. This saga could still be dragging on yet another week.
That could have been a bloodbath. Maybe enough to knock Mississippi out of the playoffs, but certainly to a road game.

I was at a gathering tonight attended by several well-heeled bear sharks (the types that sit in the sky boxes) and, to a man, they all told me that they were “scared to death that Auburn might win the Iron Bowl” and prolong the agony.

Carter was misled bad by Kiffin which Carter was stupid not to have a better backup plan. Carter and Ole Dixie fans are delusional and gullible beyond believe! Arrogant and Kiffin's Ego kicked Ole Dixie down!! Every Ray Charles and Stevie wonder fan in America saw this coming! LOL

No way I'd want UM in Atlanta or this to have dragged out another week. It might have had a different and much worse outcome. They could have won the SEC championship and Lane could have ended up staying. I'll take things just the way they are.

Word on the street is that kiffin was waiting for the outcome of the iron bowl and would have been on the way to tuscaloosa had alabama lost
I think the street was wrong here, my understanding is that Kiffin burnt some very prominent bridges during his time in Tuscaloosa, but sports can lead to strange turns for sure

Their backup options were 2 guys that took better jobs. They were a victim of not knowing where they fall in the pecking order of the SEC so instead of doing a search where they could find someone qualified that wasn't talking to programs that were more attractive than theirs, they continued to talk to people who were never going to come to OM in this hiring cycle.

All in all, this has to be the biggest crash and burn ever.

From what I was told it was one bridge in particular that could NEVER be rebuilt.

Are you telling me they think more of themselves than everyone else does? No way!

Sumrall was never a possibility for them. Don't believe their "he preferred Ole Miss" spin.
He might have preferred ole Miss to his offers before Florida. If he wasn't on Florida's, LSU's, Auburn's, or PSU's radar, don't know what other jobs are out there that would be clearly better. But it does seem like he was a hot enough name that somebody was going to pick him up before Ole Miss, particularly if they had to wait for the Lane drama to unfold. Definitely should have had a few people lined up. I'd like to see what ethical rules Jimmy Sexton supposedly agrees to as far as negotiating with Ole Miss for Kiffin while Ole Miss is having to reach out through him to line up back up plans.

which makes me think that the moment that door cracks open at Bama, Kiffen will drop LSU like a bad habit and bolt
And the door will crack open if DeBoer keeps losing 2 or more games each year. Or even one game each year. Fans are already antsy. When they lost to Oklahoma, the ones I know were ready to pay his way to Penn State, and I'm sure that was reinforced by the close Iron Bowl (oddly, none of them have even mentioned the game since it was over).

If he’d was ever going to get a chance to coach Alabama, DeBoer wouldn’t be their coach today.

I know right? I can’t believe the school stupid enough to not know Kiffin was not really mulling over the decision to leave for one of the best jobs in the country would do such a thing!

Sadly, OM will never defeat LSU again, that is an L every single year, as well as the Oklahoma game.

Most likely right, but OU offense is Mateer, after he leaves they my struggle. Venables would be on the hot seat if Mateer had went elsewhere.

It kind of appears with all that is leaking out that some of them felt they had enough dirt on him to keep him in Oxford.
