Purdue buddy of mine said Painter had to take him off of the recruiting trail, because he sucked at it. Just FYI. I still don't get it. Payne, Jones, and Davis, yet we hire an assistant from a 16-15 Clemson team plus turn down Nike money??

They said the reason he left Purdue was that they couldn't match he money Clemson was offering.

He got canned at Purdue because he couldn't land the players he recruited. While we are at Payne makes 750,000 at Kentucky. We basically turned down one of the best recruiters in the country that has connections all cross the land for guy that can't sign anybody. Unbelievable. This is another Croom hire that is for sure.

If you check is resume you see that he was a serious contender when recruiting the Chicago area, I would also point at Purdue's success the last 3 years those are his guys that were there. I know him personally and knqow that he can win in the living room I would feel very good about this hire because the best in State kids will stay home with this guy on board.

There
is a rumor floating around that assistant coach Rick Ray is heading to
Clemson to take an assistant coaching role under head coach Brad
Brownell.

We don't have much to verify this quite yet, but it sounds like it may be a done deal.

If so, this will be very unfortunate as Rick Ray has been a huge asset for recruiting.

We'll keep you posted when we hear anything 'official'...</p>

It looks like this post is the source of a bunch of idiots saying he was fired at Purdue. You people suck.

being at KY was the ONLY, or perhaps THEreason those guys signed with KY?

help Payne get the job at Oregon then Kentucky you do the math. We would have signed Pollard if we hired Payne. Don't be surprise if Kentucky comes after him now.

Payne may be the real deal but come on, recruiting to UK with Calipari as the head coach? That is a hard freaking job! And forgive me but I will trust what I read in print from former coaches, writers, and players instead of someone here's friend.

Go check out Oregon's recruiting while Payne was there. And they have advantages we don't have. Anyone who thinks, since Payne is friends with WWW, we would have been pulling in loaded recruiting classes like Kentucky, is insane. WWW is helping his friend get coaching jobs by throwing out his own name; he obviously isn't helping him actually land many of the recruits. The reason UK gets the recruits is Calipari; he was doing it at Memphis, too. WWW helps Calipari; there's no evidence he helps Payne. Hiring a basketball coach based on supposed recruiting connections alone is absurd.

Anyone suggesting that Kenny Payne, Mike Davis, or Stan Jones would have definitely been a better hire, simply because we know those guys, is insane. They're the same people who would have killed hires like Dean Smith, Coach K, and Billy Donovan, and praised hires like Trent Johnson, Tommy Amaker, Quin Snyder, Stan Heath, and Buzz Peterson. The first list of names were 'no-name' hires at one point; the second list were 'big-name' hires at one point. Funny how the only thing that determines how long the name lasts is whether they sink or swim once hired at a bigger school. We just don't know. Kenny Payne may be the next Tom Izzo, but I'm guessing he's far closer to the next John Pelphrey.

Payne makes $300K at UK not 750K. He took a pay cut from Oregon (where he made 400K) to come to UK. This just proves you have no clue.

But you're right about Payne. He recruited so well at Oregon he got the 1st coach he worked for there fired. And to say Oregon has advantages we don't have is an understatement if anything. They're practically a subsidiary of Nike.
