by throwing out a 65 at 59 years old

**edited to add*- the guys were talking about the final round in 1977 when Watson beat Nicklaus in a shootout by throwing out a 65. Jack shot a 66. In Tigers 12 years, has anybody ever thrown a 65 or 66 at him on the final day to make him earn a major?

Els, Mickelson, Singh, Goosen, or Harrington shooting a 65 in a major when they are 2 months away from their 60th birthday...they arent that good.

Bob May in the 2000 PGA Championship shot 66 to force a playoff. Tiger shot 67.

Also, Duval shot 67 in the 2001 masters on the final day and tiger shot 68
In the 2006 British, Dimarco shot 68 in round 4 and tiger shot 67
I believe the 06 pga was close too.

Moral of the Story: Play good on the first three days and you don't have to shoot 65 on day 4

Trying to invalidate Tiger Woods because an old man shot a low round on the opening day of a major.

Coach, don't you think it's a testament to how intimidating Tiger is that you are basically guaranteed to NOT win the major if you are paired with him in the final round?

The guys that play with Tiger in the final round rarely even shoot under par on that day if they both start the day in contention. He puts that much pressure on his competition. A lot of times his playing partners on the final round will balloon up and shoot an 80+.

I think I remember that, and maybe all it means is that the Open courses level the playing field for guys that don't hit the ball as far anymore. Watson was always a great putter, and half the time, scoring well on the Open courses depends more on playing from the fairway. You can't overpower most of the courses they play on for that tourney.

Tiger is facing plenty of guys that are damn good that are over 34.

So yeah, its hard to think that 1 round makes the comp back in the day so great.

that shows the players of today have no sack and arent as good as the top guys of the 60's and 70's...Jack intimidated the tour when he came along as well. But good players dont give a **** and will go out and do their thing. 2 things are constant on tour right now:

1. Nobody paired with Tiger on the last day ever throws out a 66 or 67 on the final day to make him earn a title. It may have happened once.
2. Tiger has never won a major when he isnt leading going into Sunday

I don't think he is trying to invalidate Tiger, rather show that anyone paired with him becomes a mental midget on the final day. Lee, Arnold, Tom and Seve to some degree...none of those guys let Jack do to them mentally what Tiger does to the current tour players..even the best ones. And the reverse is true also, Jack came in and was HATED because he didn't bow down to Arnie and his army of fans. I think plenty of players have Tigers game, they just can't compete with his mind.

he wins a lot. claiming the competition is worse is retarded. never in any time of this sport has there been so much emphasis on being in shape, mechanics, high tech equipment to study one's swing, etc. it is a damn science for most of the guys on the tour.

face it, tiger is just that damn good.

Pardon the formatting. I'm a yuku retard. Anyhow, I just put together the chart above to show the lowest scoring average dating all the way back to 1947. You will notice that Tiger isn't on there. I replaced his scoring titles from the years 2007, 2005, 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, and 1999 with the 2nd highest score from those years since we are comparing to his competition. In 1988 scoring averages were no longer simple scoring averages. The PGA began adjusting them - so to take out any bias in the new scoring, I added an entire stroke to those scoring averages. Why 1? I don't know, but it's alot, so deal with it.

The chart above is sorted by adjusted scoring average lowest to highest. I've summarized the lowest 20 scoring averages by decade to the right.

Jack started playing in 1962. So for all practical purposes, you can consider his prime as anytime in the 60s, 70s, and 80s - most of which was in the 70s.

Notice which decade garnered a goose egg is the 20 low scoring averages? The 1970s. The height of Jack's career where he won 8 majors.

I know the stats above aren't an exact science, but my point is, don't suggest that Tiger's domination is skewed because of poor competition. It's a broad generalized statement that really can't be backed up.

Golfers today are every bit as talented as they were in the past. The problem with today's golfers is they all have zero personality. They just aren't as likable as the golf heroes of past. Basically, you can probably just chalk this up to you having man crushes on Arnold Palmer and Billy Casper.

"I think plenty of players have Tigers game, they just can't compete with his mind."

the mind game is part of being great, just like the physical part....How many QB's had Joe Montana's skills, but were unable to perform like him when it counted? And numerous other examples

Fact remains- too many players on tour today dont have the sack to make winning shots. This wasnt the case in the 60's, 70's, and 80's....

I'll agree that no one can match Tiger mentally. However, I also don't think anyone can match his game physically. There are a lot of good golfers out there, but none of them have the shot making ability he has. He is better than anyone on the tour at getting out of trouble. He's one of the longer hitters on the tour, and he's got one of the best short games on the tour. There are plenty of players that can compete with him in one or two areas, but none of them have his level of game in all areas.

He's not been at the top of his game lately, and he's still in the Top 10 every week because he's able to carry himself with another part of his game when one part of his game is struggling. No one else out there has that right now.

Either way, I don't think you can compare golfers from era to era for multiple reasons. The competition is one reason. The technology is another. I realize that all golfers use the same technology, but different eras of technology have made the game easier for players with different styles of games.

Who is the greatest golfer ever? That's impossible to answer. You can make a list of the greatest for each generation, but that's where it ends. Is it Woods, Nicklaus, Palmer, Snead, or is it even Bobby Jones? We'll never know, but it's fun to debate. Right now, Tiger is unquestionably the best in the game, and he may dominate this generation more than any other golfer has dominated a generation. Does that make him the best ever? That's up for debate, but impossible to prove.

trying to say that Tiger isn't as good as the golfers in the past because of the competition that he faces is probably one of the weakest arguments i have seen.

nobody is saying Tiger isnt great. He may actually be better than Jack. I'm saying his competition is not as good as Jack's was among the top players. I'm saying Mickelson, VJ, Goose, Harrington, and Sergio arent as good as Player, Palmer, Snead, Watson, Trevino and those guys. And that helps Tiger be as dominant as he is.

Its pretty amazing that nobody paired with Tiger in a major hasnt thrown a 67 or 66 on him to make him earn one. Its also shows that these guys on tour are ok as long as they are ahead. Its easy being the frontrunner, character and toughness show when the going gets tough.

I agree that the top guys behind Tiger aren't as good as Player, Palmer, Snead, Watson, and Trevino's, but I think Tiger faces a deeper and more talented field every week than Jack did. Outside of about 6-10 guys, Jack didn't have much else to compete with every week. There are a whole slew of guys every week that have the ability to challenge Tiger. Guys like Singh, Mickelson, Els, Kim, Harrington, Furyk, Villegas, Weekley, Austin, Perry, Jiminez, just to name a few. No none of them are the caliber of player that Tiger is or the caliber of player of Jack's top competition, but all have won and competed in their share of tournaments. I think Tiger faces a deeper field than Jack ever did.

Can you please put this to rest? Bob May while paired with Tiger in the 2000 PGA shot 66. He was one shot back. Tiger shot 67. They went to a playoff and Tiger beat him. Your statement is false.
