Way OT: Concealed Carry in Nebraska for an out of towner

Hey guys, my wife and I are coming out to Omaha to see family in a couple weeks. This is the first time I've come out since getting my Illinois CCL, and just wanted to see if there was anything I need to be aware of. I already confirmed both Iowa and Nebraska recognize my permit, so that isn't an issue. I know a number of guys on here carry concealed, and the Illinois Carry forum hasn't had alot to share regarding Nebraska carry law, not surprisingly, so I figured I might get some good info here.

My biggest questions are...
-If I interact with a police officer, I need to inform them immediately I am a CCL holder and armed, correct? I ask because we don't have a duty to inform here in IL.
--If I need to disarm before going somewhere, am I in any legal jeapordy if I have to disarm and put it in my trunk, necessitating exposing the firearm in the process? Here, as long as you are immediately near your car and in the process of disarming you're ok.
-We're planning on going to the Strategic Air Command Museum, are they technically on Air Force property such that I wouldn't even be able to keep my CCW in the car? I'm assuming the zoo is a no-go as well.
-Any other idiosyncrasies I need to know about?

Omaha has it's own set of rules as well. I'm not sure how long you have to register your weapon with them but I know you have to. I'm not sure how that works with travelers.

I have had mine for a couple years. Got pulled over in Iowa last Sunday night while visiting cemeteries after a baseball tourney. Sheriff was really cool. He asked what I carry after I informed him I was a ccl holder and was carrying. He liked my new Kimber 6s .357 magnum. Chatted me up for a while, and gave me a warning for being 7 over. Most officers are cool as long as you stay calm and follow courteous protocol when interacting with them. Wish more people would work with the Blue, instead of against them!

Omaha has it's own set of rules as well. I'm not sure how long you have to register your weapon with them but I know you have to. I'm not sure how that works with travelers.

Have the license on him and abide by the law and he's good (doesn't have to register it locally).

No need to inform the city of Omaha. LE, ER yes. If you do find yourself with the need of leaving the weapon in a vehicle. Make sure you are always accompanying it if the vehicle is in operation. Meaning, if somebody else happens to be driving the vehicle and the gun is still stashed ( and you're not in said vehicle) if they don't have a CCW they will be in illegal possession of a firearm if pulled over. Schools, banks, hospitals, and most likely the zoo is probably a no no.

Other than that you should be good to go.

Thanks, just me and my wife (who doesn't like to drive) coming out so I don't think leaving it in the car will be an issue as far as that goes. I'm OCD about my firearm being on me anytime it's out of the safe/lockbox.

Where does a person generally carry a gun when they have a CCL permit? I would have a hard time finding a place that wasn't uncomfortable or a nuisance. Especially if you go to the gym every night. If you are wearing shorts or workout gear, do you just put it under your seat when you go into the gym?

Usually on the dash in plain view. Plus I leave my doors unlocked so the gun can be used by anyone. It's really like a big swap meet.
Either that or a portable safe, which is the safe and responsible way. But assuming gun owners are careless is easier I suppose.

I'm assuming you mean where as in where on the body? There are holsters specifically designed to hold it inside your waistband, which is what I use because it's easiest to conceal. Others use holsters that are outside the waistband, but I've never found one that conceals like I'd like. In either case, it usually involves dressing around it, like wearing a looser shirt. This is similar to the setup I use, although mine rides lower to make it easier to conceal.

As far as working out, if I go to the gym I lock it in a lock box in my car, which is the same thing I do for prohibited places. That being said, I do have a holster that I can wear with jogging pants as well, I just don't use it if I'm lifting.

It really depends on personal preference. There are many more options in the cold weather. Tough to conceal when wearing a slim fitting t-shirt and basketball shorts in the summer.

I was actually honestly asking. I'm not sure I would carry a gun, but with what is happening worldwide, it looks more and more appealing with every passing day.

Careful. Before you even consider it, be prepared to be labeled as a: lunatic, racist, redneck, psycho, idiot.... or a 100 other things in the "playbook". I personally thank God every day that none of my guns have gone on a rampage after escaping my house.

Guessing it might be the 5.11 Tactical one of seen a few places online. Interesting concept, kinda similar to alot of the belly band holsters I've seen. I just prefer to have more retention so I've never invested in one. My Remora holster I use for wearing shorts/jogging pants is about on the edge of what I consider adequate retention.

Mine has actually worked with shorts too, but they have to have drawstring and I have to cinch them pretty tight. I have the version with the reinforced top so I don't ha e to take it out to reholster.

You're correct. I'll never understand the need to have a gun while working out or playing a pick-up basketball game. Or even jogging. Real life isn't a movie, and I see nothing but more bad than good coming out that scenario.

But I digress.

I don't play pickup basketball, nor do I jog, not good for my back.

However, I do go for walks from time to time in jogging pants and will carry when I do SO. I also have to go out to the in-laws to take care of their animals, sometimes at night when I'd much rather just throw on sweats.

All that aside, I don't think life is like a movie. I don't imagine myself getting into a gunfight and never want to, but I also recognize that the world is also not as safe as it is on Leave It To Beaver. As a correctional officer, my family and I are at a higher risk for being victims of a violent crime, and I'd rather take responsibility for ensuring our safety. I totally understand the decision not to arm yourself, I just see no reason to mock those of us who choose to.
