You guys need to get off this jump thing - based on the results of this defense in the first two games it is not an over reaction to say we have real issues

No kidding? I thought Diaco would come in year one, game one, with the roster he inherrited, change schemes, and we would be top twenty. I'm shocked we have issues. Sick
This is the guy that supposedly read about Diaco, knew his philosophy at Notre Dame and UConn but for some reason expected him to do something totally different at Nebraska.
I will admit, I thought this defense would be better than it has been in the first 2 games, I don't think this is as good as its going to get though. I believe as the season progresses the defense will get better and better as they get more comfortable in their assignments and as the opponents become more B1G football type offenses.
Of course the defense should improve - to what level is my concern. And yes I thought Riley would have more influence on the defensive scheme - Diaco failed miserably with this defense his last stop, I thought it would be a little different. I did like his enthusiasm and I liked the the overall scheme just not the passive part of it.
This line of reasoning that we should have expected the defense to be among the worst in the nation after two games because of scheme change and talent - is an excuse pure and simple and neglects all the other teams doing better with new coaches and less talent

You hire a coach for what he has done in his past. You sound like the chick that marries the bad boy, party guy and is surprised when he is out womanizing and drinking.
He was what he was, he has never had teams that put up big sack totals. His total defense rankings were typically 30-50, his teams give up 5 yards per play, and 340 yards per game, but they were typically much better in scoring defense and were typically ranked in the mid 20's.
You expecting him to be different or expecting Riley to influence him to be different is all on you. If you want a coach that is going to put pressure on the passer, then you hire a guy whose defense is designed that way.
Adapt or die. These RPO offenses are designed to put defenders in traditional defenses in cross conflict. Need to re-design to alleviate this as much as possible. The way I see it, you have to either have superior athletes where 4 can consistently blow up 5 or 6 or creatively attack the mesh point in different ways so that the O-line and QB are always thinking (I.E. playing slower).
You have to have a base defense to "re-design" This is no different than Pelini creating a defense designed to slow down Big 12 offenses. Who did they struggle against? Diaco's defense is designed to be successful against the Iowa's, Minnesota's and Wisconsin style of offense.
And as I said later, if you wanted a defense that was designed to stop the spread offenses of the PAC, you needed to hire a DC whose defense is predicated on stopping those offenses.
I agree with your base defense argument. I think we thought we could handle ASU with the superior talent angle. Our 3/4 can blow up your 5/6 so we are going to sit in base and get our back end some much needed experience.
This idea that you can only have a defense that can stop one type of offense and all teams in a conference play one style of offense is complete bs. There aren't any spread offenses in the B1G? Every team in the B1G hasn't incorporated some spread concepts/packages into their aresenal?
you may be right but that assumes the Big10 does not have QB's that can torch us the same way. This notion the assistant coach runs what they want when they want to is nonsense. Using the Pelini example when after his first game against ASU at LSU he sat in his passive defense and was torched Les Miles reamed his *** and told him to change and he then blitzed a heck of a lot more and the defense responded.
I think you will have Riley in Diaco's ear this week. He is not going to fire one of his friends just to see the defense take a step back
Cornnation has their lies and stats column after games. The stats tell the same story that we see in the games, our D is outright bad. Now Diaco wants to keep the opponents out in front of him (i.e. limit big plays), so our D must be up in the stands because other teams are putting a lot of points on the board.
If you believe our talent level matches our output on the field, when you lose a tooth, leave it under your pillow and the tooth fairy will leave you some money.
If you went hook, line, and sinker on Diaco's crying about RPO and ineligible man down field rules, I'll try to let you down easy, magicians don't really do magic. They just use distraction.
Diaco has things to fix. He can choose to be like Pelini, and let things continue because he knows "best". If he chooses to follow this path, at the point we've been over the pain threshold for too long, he'll be gone. OR, they'll continue working on the problems and make adjustments to account for weaknesses (this is what I choose to believe).

you are going full extreme on my comment. Diaco's defense is designed to shut down the run and force teams to pass. That works best against teams that like to run the ball. That doesn't mean that you won' be successful against spread teams, just that you will have more vulnerability against the spread.
I think there is some merit to thinking that the plan against Ark St was to out talent them. But if you watched any Ark St games from year's past, that wasn't their base offense they ran against Nebraska. Call it outcoached or what have you, but Anderson adjusted his offense to take advantage of young CBs and inexperienced OLBs. It almost worked.

Did we ever check the interest on Leavitt before he flew the CU coop to Oregon? I know we officially fired Banker after the bowl game but obviously we were thinking about that last December? Oregon doubled his salary to $1.15 million. I'm not sure we would have gone that high.
Sam Mckewon said the defense would be pretty good before the season. He also said get ready for a top 10 defense in 2018. There are some real jokers writing at the two major newspapers in Nebraska.
At what point do we recognize that some of that talent was developed? ARE we comfortable saying this staff is developing the talent they have at the same success rate?
You can talk about the physical attributes such as speed, height and weight with players but there are thousands of high school and college athletes a year who get passed over to the next level because they weren't coached up.
Unfortunately it is the way it is. If he comes out and says........I don't think we are going to be very good then he gets crucified. Kind of like coming out on these boards 2 years ago and saying you don't think MR is any good.
The problem I had is he was talking about a 2018 top 10 defense before even watching a game this year. That is stupid journalism.
