"We are not a Redshirt Program" Mullen

I asked coach Dan Mullen about this after practice Tuesday. And more specifically, I asked Mullen about the chance Tyler Russell has to come in and play as a true freshman. "We are not a redshirt program right here," Mullen said, "so when you come, if you the best guy, our best guys are going to play. He is going to come in, and he has been at a couple of practices, so he understands what's expected. I like the fact that he'll have his chance and if he's the best he'll play. I still wish he could redshirt but if he's the best he should. We need our best chance to win</font></p>

At this point we need the best talent on the field, regardless of year or redshirt. Mullen is trying to build a winning program, and to do that with a team that lacks the depth we do, we have to play freshman. </p>

he will be good enough to get more Ws than Lee? Not being a dick, just curious. There were times last year when Lee didn't look bad, but he didn't have much help, and I don't think Russell will either. I'm not sure that playing a true freshman regardless of his potential will translate in to more Ws this season.

Edited to add: Then again, I suppose he could come in, pick up the system quickly, and absolutely blow away the competition. When will he be on campus?

I think this is more likely to happen than Lee surviving the season next year. Russell already runs a variation of the spread and I know for a fact that the coaches are telling him to be prepared.

For the record, I'll say that I hope I'm wrong and that Lee does well and Relf can do whatever and Russell can redshirt.

What's that you say? That was our old coach? Oh, well then, nevermind.

Seriously though, I'm all for him playing if he's ready, and if he's not, then so be it. As long as we have the best QB at the time on the field.

But do I think it's likely Russell will be starting by mid-season? Yep. I don't believe that anyone who has watched a practice could think any differently.</p>

at this point it's not smart to put all our stock into Tyler Russell. However, if he does get to start, you can bet that he's solidly beat out Tyson Lee, and if that happens, then all the hype over him was worth it.

which WR's? Considering the majority of our '09 receiving corps is getting ready for prom or is rehabbing, I doubt Lee has that much of a head start. Also, TR has run that type of offense for 2-3 years.

I'm not saying Russell will remind anyone of Eric Zeier's freshmen year, but he has more going for him than Lee does.

1. We've had a couple of WR's participating in Spring that will start.
2. Lee ran The Spread in juco for 2 years
3. Russell played 5A- not SEC football...the game speed is just a little different
4. Eric Zeier went through Spring Practice with Georgia because he graduated early.
5. Russell is not going to be ready to start before at least the 4th-5th game...if Lee stays healthy, its going to be an even longer wait for him.
