I noticed that we already have Cathey a WR out of Westwood High School committed in next year's class. Last year we got Redmond and this year Gray. We need to get more quality guys from this area. Memphis is like an extended North Mississippi. Yes, you have your share of UT and UPig fans but it's a long way from Knoxville and Fayetteville. You can make it from Memphis to Starkville in 2 1/2 - 3 hours and that has to appeal to many recruits families. We have a large Alumni base in the surrounding area. I know Bama does a great job of recruiting this area as well but we need to step it up a notch. I feel the same way about the Pensacola area but we don't have the same advantage in that area due to distance from campus.

I agree with the OP....I'm glad to see us making a presence in Memphis now. I think Gray will be a good one, and it's always good to pull recruits out of an area that OM usually recruits well.

Damein Robinson and Ferlando Bohanna. Before that, Devin Jones and K.J. Wright. I don't see that our past successes or failures there should make a difference. Logistics dictate that we HAVE to recruit there, Jackson and Birmingham. I'm talking metro areas here.

The Coast, Mobile and Pensacola should also be a focal point of our recruiting, and this staff has made it a priority. It's no man's land....no real loyalty to any school from Bay St. Louis to Panama City. Outside of those you get into LSU and Florida State/Florida obviously.

Robinson and Bohanna are not...

big time contributors and Wright was a Crooms recruit. Both get PT but one could argue that Robinson has been a bust. Technically they are from Olive Branch, Ms, not Memphis but close enough I suppose. I agree about the Gulf Coast area but Pensacola has a ton of Bama fans and they sign players each year from that area. Trent Richardson ( Pensacola) comes to mind...Mcdawg can probably shed more light on the make up of the fan-base/loyalty in this area, but I think it's more of a Bama and Auburn stronghold in FL Panhandle than any other SEC schools. More so than UF and FSU...

The high school talent level has always been extremely high in the greater Memphis area for both basketball and football, but there's a reason that the SEC is real picky about who it recruits from here. With a very few exceptions, the recruiting scene in Memphis is about as shady as it gets. It's really a shame because there are a lot of good athletes and good kids here, but a lot of college coaches have backed off a good bit in the last ten years due to not wanting to get involved in the shenanigans unless there's an elite athlete at stake.

You are correct on Auburn and Alabama. I've noticed Alabama more in Pensacola as well, then Auburn everywhere else. Out in the counties, it's usually UF or FSU. Lower Alabama is obviously primarily Alabama and Auburn. But there again, the influence is not near the amount as other areas of Alabama, and no team is dominant anywhere. Yeah the big boys will probably still get the 4 and 5 stars but the point is that the concentration of good players is high. Sort of like recruiting South Florida, Atlanta, New Orleans or Houston - there's plenty to go around.

Southern lived off the 2 and 3 star types from Mobile for years. I know they don't play the same competition, but MSU could certainly use the 3 star types down there with the occasional 4 star.
