Alex Smith ran for 631 yards and 10 TDs his final year at Utah. That's more rushing TDs than Chris Relf ran for in his entire career at MSU.
I'm confused by how we define "pocket passer" and "dual threat" -- because statistically, Alex Smith was about as much of a "dual threat" as there was at the time, Vince Young notwithstanding.
And I'm sure a significant amount of those yards didn't come off of designed plays. And that's really my point... He doesn't have to be Manziel, but we just need a guy with the ability to evade the pass rush. Colt McCoy did it. McCarron did it. Luck did it (I can recall him running for like 50 yards on a scramble off the top of my head and he is NOT a dual). Practically any successful QB I can think of did it. The ability to stand in the pocket but rush for the 1st when **** hits the fan was always what was keeping TR from turning the corner. He had the same mobility as Ryan Mallett without the excuse of being a giant.
And Alex Smith hasn't had a designed running play called for him until that pistol this past season where he faked it to a ghost before running in for the TD. Not a dual.
Again, the pocket passer can thrive under Mullen, but he's going to have to have some raw athleticism that TR just didn't possess.
