We should consider breaking down prospective coaches by price

I think that, instead of just throwing names out there and trying to determine which prospective coach might be best for RU, we should break down our list of coaching candidates by price. We could even indicate what we believe a prospective coach is worth, rather than what that coach may in fact demand.

Here's my list of candidates from the perspective of what I would pay these coaches.

$1 million or less
Mario Cristobal
Bob Diaco
P.J. Fleck
Joe Mogila

$1 million to $1.5 million
Matt Rhule
Al Golden
Greg Schiano

$2 million and up
Mark Richt
Chip Kelly

Suffice it to say, I really don't think I'd be terribly excited by anyone in the < $1 million category (although, Diaco is starting to turn UConn around, so that's promising). If we were to actually court any of those coaches, I wouldn't want to see RU spending anything more than that. In the next category, I would be interested in Rhule and possibly Golden (GS .. not so sure). The topmost category .. well, of course. And, Barchi did say that money wouldn't be an issue. Although, I don't think anyone really knows what he means by that.

I'm sure I left out a bunch of candidates, so who would you like to see on our sidelines next fall and how much do you think the university should pay?

You're not going to sign anyone from list for what you offered. Hell, Schiano was making $2 million the last time he was here.

Lol, Schiano, Kelly, and Richt would easily cost over $3 million if not more. No way in hell would they work for less than that.

Price doesn't matter at this point. RU can't be penny wise and pound foolish. $4M/ y at least for Richt, and RU needs to do it to compete in the B1G east.

Diaco is making over $1,400m now at UCONN ....why would he take a huge cut to come to RU ?..

I didn't say that's what I would pay those coaches because I thought RU could sign them for that amount. I am saying that's what I think those coaches are worth. I know that GS was making more than $2M when he left. But, i do not think he is worth anywhere near that. You mean that I can pay him $2M/year today to get us 7-8 wins a year? Flood got us 8 wins last year for half that.

I do not want to see RU overpay for coaches who haven't proven anything. I would rather pay more for an established, successful coach. That's why I only put Kelly and Richt in the category of realistic salaries. None of the other names people are floating around are worth it. Otherwise, find a coordinator or FCS coach and pay him somewhere in the Flood neighborhood, and he'll get you 6-7 wins a year.

A lot of people don't realize how coaching salaries have escalated in recent years. Fleck is making $800K at WMU that runs through the 2020 season. It will probably cost $1M to get him away from there. RU got about what they paid for out of Flood.

you would need to double those numbers (and possibly more) for the associated assistant staff - not going to cut it with those prices.

Newsflash: Rhule already makes close to $1.5MM, and will certainly be making over that when we renegotiate his contract.

Why would he leave TU, where he is on his way to having a stadium with his name on it, to start fresh at Rutgers for the same or less money? Rutgers?!?!
