We will have a new coach. How optimistic are you about it?

I admit, I was against running Stans off, but when it happened, I took the balanced view that it would be okay. Now my confidence is wavering.

I'm cautiously optimistic that our program will be better over the next 10 years than it was the last 10 years.<div>

We just need 7 or 8 guys who play hard and the fans will be packing the hump. I think the next guy will be able to recruit just as well as Stansbury did.</p>

I saw that Craig Sword and Pollard got Gatorade Player of the Year honors for Alabama and Mississippi. It made me realize how good the recruiting class that we've put in doubt is.

Also, I'm more skeptical that we'll be able to get a proven coach. What I originally saw as a smooth transition is feeling to me now like a total blowing up and rebuilding of the program.

I do feel that Stans had been here long enough. I thought he'd lost his mojo two years ago and was starting to get it back this season. But, as somebody else said, ten years or more in the same job is always danger time. I just wish the transition felt smoother. Unknowns are natural in this instance, but I still would prefer to have fewer of them than we do have now.

Not making the Sweet 16 sucks, but I don't want to be Auburn, Georgia, Ole Miss, South Carolina, LSU, Tennessee, or any of several programs that have not won or competed with our regularity.

Say what you will about Stansbury's failures; with his teams on the floor we felt that we had a chance in every game against every team. I don't want that to go away.

it's pretty unlikely that we will match the last 10 years in overall success. It was time for Stans to go and I think the future will be better than it would have been if we'd kept him, but I think we've seen the second golden age of MSU basketball.

Stans has proven in the last few years he can't get us to the tournament even with talented players. If we're going to miss the tournament anyway, I'd rather do it with a team that doesn't completely embarrass our university nationally. In the last6 years, Stans is 1-2 in the NCAA, 1-2 in the NIT, and missed posteason twice.

Make the correct hire and we should be able to remain a top SEC program, perhaps even improve. Make the wrong hire and we could sink into long-term mediocrity or worse, with less hope of recovering for some time. What we have going for us now is a solid rep as a winning program for the past 20 years. We should be able to use that to get a better coach than we could if we become a loser.<div>
