Unfortunately the weather messed up a number of games after they started last night. It looks like most will resume on Monday.

Meadowbrook starts their season by going 2-0, scoring 101 and not giving up any points. Best start since 2011. (Thanks for the info, Matt)

Amelia leading TJ 21-7 at the time of the lightning suspension. I think the new Coach has really had a huge, positive impact on the program. But, I expect TJ will right the wrongs and come back on Amelia when the

Petersburg put a pretty good whipping on I C Norcom. Speaking of new Coaches, Coach Jerome Mathis at Petersburg is the real deal. He steps into the job behind another really good coach, Coach Scott. And Coach Scott is still helping with the team. I expect good things to happen in Petersburg.

Speaking of Monday games, it will feel a lot more like football weather by nightfall on Monday. YEA!!!

More after the games tonight, and be sure to add your comments.

My mistake. I saw AHS and wrongly assumed it was Amelia High School.

I’m still a little surprised that Armstrong had pulled out to a 14 point lead.

Thanks for the correction.

BTW, I think the posting of game updates and scores on this new format is working out ok. Do you agree?

I was going to go watch Lake Braddock against Madison but had something else come up. Saw that Madison was up 31-13 in the second half and didn't feel too bad about missing it, but just checked again and LB came back to win 34-31 with Madison missing the tying field goal at the end. Oh well, none of the regular season games are actually that important anymore.

Loudoun County with a 47-yard field goal in the final seconds to beat Sherando 15-14. Sherando had the ball at the LC 10-yard line with under three minutes left and fumbled, allowing LC to drive for the winning score.

Osbourn Park beats Hylton 27-14 to go to 2-0 for the first time since 2006. The last time they won more than two games in a season was 2017.

This ain't like King George dropping b2b games this early
KG is in deep trouble this year. The loss of a veteran coach and his complete staff, and the loss of a key player or two to transfers. Before the season got under way, there was talk that they may be so low on numbers that they couldn’t field a team. That proved to be absurd speculation.

Sure have gone from the penthouse to the outhouse in just a couple of years.

Wise move to not throw lambs to the slaughter. Nothing of real value is gained by that.
Did not have enough healthy upperclassmen, didn’t want to throw youngsters out there against Graham I suppose .

Giles beating Radford the way they did. Appo over Rustburg. Gate City in a narrow miss against 6A Tennessee Powerhouse Dobyns Bennett raised some eyebrows. DB is on the level of a Salem, Lafayette, Highland Springs, Varina type. They were expected to have a running clock by 2nd qtr. Gate City actually outplayed them. Back here in SWVA, number 2 state ranked and WV 3A Princeton throttled Bluefield, WV 51-6, a week after Bluefield, WV, beat crosstown rival Graham.

The GMen have to play at Princeton this season as well as hosting Union. Graham better get it together quick or they will find themselves 7 and 3. Talent is there. Young, but raw, but starting QB is hurt and the starting WR and LB who is a first team All State type player is hurt. Not good for Graham with Union coming to town (actually the game is at Tazewell High) as Graham is still building its home stadium.

looks like Bird has taken a large step back as MBK has taken a large step forward.
A coincidence?
I think not.
Bird has been raiding MBK's school zone for years.
Since they are side by side it was very easy.
Is MBK benefiting from the new regs?

What was the final TD Bird score?

I see it, 21-0 Thomas Dale over Bird.
LC Bird starts the season with two straight losses. And have scored 0 points.
We are talking about a team that made it to the state semifinal game last season.

Kudos to both Meadowbrook and Petersburg but let's see what they do when they play good teams. You can only play who is in front of you but they haven't had stiff competition yet. IC Norcom is 0-2, Henrico is 0-2, Clover Hill is 0-1 and Kecoughtan is now 1-1.

Meadowbrook is benefitting from a head coach in his third year with a team that is now used to his system and has bought in.

LC Bird's big issue this year is the fact that they only had 3 starters return from last season. Bird is hurting unlike at any other point. With the shutout today, Bird has been shutout in back-to-back games for the first time ever!

Yes but we are talking about a team that only has three starters back from that team that reached the state semifinals. The program has taken a tremendous hit. After today, they have been shutout in back-to-back games for the first time ever.

Highland Springs hanging tough with Hough.

Franklin County looking like the Franklin County of old.

this is a program that used to reload rather than rebuild. Since I live in the MBK zone there no sympathy for them here. I am however elated that the new coach is retaining the kids in the MBK zone..

Let’s see, what else notable caught my eye?

A solid win by Stuart’s Draft for our buddy Gunz.

Culpeper getting the win over Eastern View for the first time ever. Thanks for the heads up Navy Nation HQ on that one.

Churchland beating Bethel was a surprise to me. I figure the Truckers are a little above the line of being called a “decent” team, but in my minds eye, I’ve got Bethel competing at the upper tier this year. I just don’t know what conclusion to draw from this game.

I was a little surprised that Hampton got the win over Lake Taylor. But it was so close it could have gone either way, I guess?

Congratulations to the Prince George Coach, Coach Hall for picking up his 200th career win.

Culpeper over Eastern View for the first time ever is huge! Think we’re going to see a shift in Culpeper County.

I've never done a game at Meadowbrook. I'm actually hoping Deep Run beats Lake Taylor this week so they and Meadowbrook meet as undefeated teams.

Meadowbrook is not bad now, but for years half the field lights didn’t work and they set some temporary construction lights up that shined into to eyes of everyone in the visitors stands. Until they put in the turf field, any cow pasture in the area was smoother.

But, all of that is in the paste and it’s a really nice stadium now.

PS: I don’t give DR much chance of beating LT, but that is why they play the games.

Agree - this program is lost! Can’t keep coaches or players around
Things change, people get older and have to retire, but…!!!
When Ray Long retired they had a rock solid program and a staff with tons of experience. And instead of embracing what was already in place, and doing the usual tweeks to keep up with times and implement new ideas, the new coach cleared house and implemented he own grand ideas. And here we are 20 some years later and they are still struggling to find their identity.

Absolutely spot on. Coach Rudd played at Meadowbrook, understands the challenges his kids face, and has wrapped his arms each and every one of them. You can't beat loyalty, trust, and hard work. Proud of Billy.

It’s great to hear some positive information about what is happening in a football program in our area. You cannot overstate how important it is to our kids out there everywhere, to have positive influences in their life. Whether it be a coach, a teacher, a guidance councilor, or even the custodial staff, our kids need and WANT role models and mentors that love them and support them, and show them the right way.
