Week 4: Lincolnton @ Burns

Might as well get this one started. Burns had a get right game after 2 rough weeks against very good teams, before going against a hapless East Gaston team which we could've scored 70 had we wanted. Lincolnton coming in off a 28-0 shutout of Cherryville which I honestly didn't think would be that close. Is Cherryville that much improved?

This will be a big game for playoff purposes. Hoping for a great game and hopefully the stands will be packed! Game of the week in our conference for sure.

Thoughts?

For me Burns MUST limit turnovers and cut way back on the penalties. We had well over 100 penalty yards against East Gaston. Have to play smarter.

But if Burns can get their stable of backs of Max Davis (JR), Kolton Pryor (SO) & Markalen Camp (JR) going, they will be hard to stop. Oh and I didn't even mention the sweeps to Romelo Wells (JR) or to Ussery (SO)..... Burns has a lot of options and speed on the ground.

To me this game is a toss up right now but I'll give Burns the slight advantage of being at home.

Is this the first time these two schools have played? To be relatively close, and 2 good programs, I never remember them playing each other.
You gotta be old like me to know the answer to your question is yes. We have played Lincolnton at least once and maybe twice. We played them way back in the very early eighties at their place during the play-offs and it was a good game, close- and we won. Seems like we might have played them at least one other time but I can’t remember the specifics. Looks like as close as we are- we would had played them many times and West Lincoln too but I don’t remember ever playing West in football.

That’s correct MeanDog, I was at that game. Burns beat us in a close one and I think you’re right about we played them a couple of other times. In that particular game the Bulldogs had a player, Tim Mayhew, who also played for Cherryville Post 100’s baseball team.

I Believe Burns wins this game. I think they are cranking up. The loss to KM really woke something up in the Dogs. Yes, they have a ways to go- limit mistakes, miscues, and turnovers but they proved in the KM game that they can give almost any team a run for it. They couldn’t do anything with Crest. Even the kicking game was way off. Crest is good but they made them look Really Good. Lincolnton will be prepared, and should present a challenge but being home will help the Bulldogs pull off the win.

Burns has every opportunity this week to make a statement. I think we have learned really fast that we have more weapons than we originally thought. People are stepping up left and right. The majority of people who have formed an opinion are using the Crest game for reference. That is not the team that will suit up next Friday.

I believe this is gonna be a bigger game than most folks realize.....
This is the one I’ve waited on. We have not played them in a very long time. I think it’s a good game for both teams to measure up. The atmosphere in Lawndale should be great. I expect Lincolnton to fill their side up as I am told they travel well. Both teams have athletes all over the field. Should be fun to watch.
I was a little surprised to see they only put up 28 last week but that could be due to a number of things. The one number that stands out to me the most is 0. They can play D. Their front 7 is physical. Is it Friday yet?

They have a coach that's really good at scheming against opponents offense. Control their corners are physical they don't mind blitzing and taking on a big running back. Offensively they are very fast and shifty they can cut on a dime and break your ankles and the Lynch brothers are so small your defense is going to get face mask penalties it's hard not to. Mayfield is about unstoppable defense you will try to double team him to take him out of the game or keep him from disrupting. But then you open the window for other kids to make plays which they will

Sounds like a really good ball team. Does Burns stand a chance?

Yeah, I believe in most cases any given Friday night in high school football any team can win. Not all 😂. High school kids aren't pros and really we shouldn't treat them or hold them as pros. Lincolnton can be beat with physicality and strong fundamental technique. But u can't make mistakes or turnover ball or they will probably make u pay for it

I mean, Maiden did beat them so clearly Maiden should be ranked much higher. The way you described them, it sounds like they are unbelievable. Hope we can keep it close.

When I was involved with the program years ago we begged West Lincoln to play us and they never would. We could get a yearly scrimmage and thats it. Its wild to me its been so long since we played Lincolnton.

We played them when I was in middle school but to my knowledge I don’t remember Burns ever playing them in high school. Now they have no choice. lol

Guys, the only prediction I’ve see for this week is the Massey Ratings who has Burns picked to win by 5.

In 4A rankings. Simmons has you at #5, and MaxPreps has you at #3

In 3A rankings, Simmons has Lincolnton at #9, and MaxPreps has us at #6.

I’m guessing that most , not all, but most of you believe this will be a rout, with the Bulldogs winning by a lot.

I’ll stand by what I’ve said from the beginning. We will know where we are after this one. Each week we have improved but still a work in progress. I do not see a blowout by either.

Yall stop being cute...

Im going to say what every last Burns fan is thinking

Lincolnton only put 28 up on Cherryville who couldn't play dead in a Friday 13th movie

Burns by at least 20

At least thats the word up around Jans and the dollar tree....
Listen, it is an old thing…We stole their Ironman, we play baseball with them in the summer, and they love the Chick-Fil-A, here, and some of the older guys shop at our liquor store because they don’t want to be seen at theirs…so we’re good to them… They get PO’d very easy. A really, really sensitive matter. I don’t know if we were even able to run up the score, but if we could have, we wouldn’t have.

 Spoken like a true cornfed, hayseed tractor jockey.

Listen up there you mangy ole mullet maestro! You Cleveland County cousin kissin' cooters won't know what bit 'em when the merciless jaws of the Wolfpack commence to asserting their dominance over the inferior canines, felines, and equines found in the armpit of the NC foothills. There isn't a pasture pup over there in Dirty Ankle that can endure the vicious onslaught that Lincolnton's finest is about to unleash.

Trust and believe, there'll be so much howling going on in Chicken Coop Crossing that you'll think your best friend Leroy is preg checkin' his heifers late at night again.

The ALPHA dogs of Lincolnton...BY 50!

Safe travels to the Lincolnton folks. I expect a good game tonight and the beginning of a new rivalry. Glad we finally got Lincoln county schools in a conference. Both teams will leave the game better prepared for the playoffs.
Thank you, Bulldog02, NC 182 begins/ends on the west side of town, here, and runs all the way to and right in front of Burns high school…In Lincoln County, it is up and down hills and full of sharp curves, but the part in Cleveland County straightens out into a easy drive. For an old guy, like me, maybe it’s best to go to Waco and turn right…Just a passing thought.
