Nice week 6 wins by Herscher and Manteno. Manteno (unless they have a huge letdown) just punched their ticket to the playoffs. Streator gets their 5th loss and wont be getting in. Here is week 7:

Herscher (2-5) @ Reed Custer (1-6): Herscher picks up a big win. Not sure if they finally got healthy but they picked up their second win against Streator. No surprises that Wilmo rolled RC. Tigers start a win streak here in a competitive game. Herscher 30 RC 20

Manteno (3-4) @ Streator (2-5):
Manteno wins a big game against rival Peotone. Streator might of already packed it in for the year. Manteno keeps rolling here. Manteno 35 Streator 13

Lisle (4-3) @ Peotone (5-2):
Lisle got dominated by CC and Peotone laid an egg against Manteno. Not sure if Lisle will have their QB back but if nit they are pretty much one dimensional. Peotone needs this win with Wilmo waiting in week 9. Devils squeeze one out here. Peotone 21 Lisle 14

#1 (3A) Wilmington (7-0) @ #3 (4A) Coal City (7-0):
Big game, big rivalry. Conference title at stake. Wilmington really hasn't been tested much this year. Racking up huge yards on the ground. Looks like they have even have been slinging the ball around. Their D has been good but have been scored on. They have had three opponents score over 20 points on them. They have a healthy Shaw and Rodowald so they will be at full strength. After a tough two non conference games, The Coalers haven't been tested in the ICE. Jezik has been on an unreal run. Already well over 1000 yards. Hutchings has had a great season too. Looking like a three year starter at QB. Defensively they have given up 14 points in 5 ICE games. They have been dominate at times. Their front seven is as good as it gets at the 4A level. They will be tested by the ground and pound this week. Wilmington will try to slow this game down, three yards and a cloud of dust and control the clock with long scoring drives. Not an easy task against the Coaler defense but it has worked all season. Coalers have been much more balanced on Offense. Now that Jezik is only playing offense he hasn't slowed down during the game. Both of these teams know each other very well and it will come down to which team can control the line of scrimmage. I think Wilmington doesn't have the athletes to match up with the Coalers. I think the Cats will score on the Coalers and at least control the time of possession. Both teams know how big this game is and the atmosphere will be electric. I think the outcome will be similar to last year. Coalers 34 Cats 13

Herscher young bucks keep getting better, will be surprised if RC scores 20, older Jones kid coming out about week 5 has really helped the defense as they get healthier. Also sounds like some kids that chose to not play this year have said they are going out next year.

Week 7 was a wild one, 2 "upsets" in the ICE...The Devils & Panthers played most of the first half like 2 teams who wanted to get of of the cold...And just read in the Vedette article that Ballmer missed the game in an ankle boot for the Devils, which helps explain some of the offensive issues the Devils had...
Edit...Vedette said he was in an ankle boot, Journal says Ballmer played...

Herscher @ Reed Custer... Tigers coming off the upset. Comets not impressing anyone. Tigers going to overpower the Comets...

Lisle @ Peotone... Somebody check the MASH unit, both teams apparently have injury issues with key players. Lisle needs their QB back, as their line isn't nasty enough to rely on the double wing. The Panthers slammed the door on the Devil rushing attack without Ballmer. But I saw more out of the Devils defense...Who would have thought week 3 that these 2 would be limping towards the playoffs? I think the Devils will punch the trident thru the heart of the Lions defense for the win...

Manteno @ Streator... Tigers stole the Bulldogs dinner last week. Panthers broke the Devils trident. Manteno has developed into the team I never would have expected...they ran an I formation play last week, for pete's sake. But Haines has made some interesting decisions - w/ 7 min to play inside the 10 on 2d down he slams Borkenhagen on a pure QB run to the middle of the field like he was setting up the FG, but then throws the int into the ez...10 point lead there is probably the end. But I suspect that the Tigers broke the Bulldogs backs...Panthers swipe the Bulldogs bacon...

AND IN THE GAME OF THE YEAR IN THE ICE:

Wilmington @ Coal City... The pickax against the claws. The Wildcats have smashed everything put in front of them. The Coalers have buried all their opponents. These two could be headed for DeKalb...The unstoppable force v the immovable object...CC is the boring, logical pick. So... Wildcats leap over the Coaler's hole and win 35-28.

It will be close. If Wilmington can win up front they can cause problems for the Coalers. I’m just not sure if they can. It’s going to be interesting

There’s a difference between a loyal fan and an idiot lol

Loyal fan took Manteno in the Rumble, same idiot took Herscher week 7...and hit them both...

I should have gone to the boat after that daily double on Friday...

After years of watching these opponents, one thing is generally true...other than for Manteno, the team that is more physical is usually the winner. That is usually the truth with power run teams...The 'Cats line has been salty, pass D pretty solid. At this point this team has shown me more than the '14 title team had, which I wondered if it could stop Manteno week 9 in the battle of division champs.

There are no surprises here. This is the unstoppable force (Cats' rushing attack) against the immovable object (Coalers Defense). The gimmicks like the Wildcats in the spread are cute, but...this game will be decided by the big uglies in the trenches. The key for the Cats will be keeping the physical mentally under control - personal fouls for late hits, roughing & the like will kill them this week.

This team is nowhere near the 14 team. That team was outstanding

I didn't say this team is better than the '14 team. In '14, I didn't know if the Cats could defend a good passing team at this point. Herscher, in the 21-18 Cat win, could do little on the ground but the 6'8" receiver couldn't be stopped. Or was that the '15 game? Nonetheless, they played 8-0 Manteno week 9 and I wasn't sure if they could stop the aerial assault. And it was the typical Wilmo-Manteno game - Panthers looked good first Q, D got run into the dirt late...

This Wildcat team has played a better variety of opponents styles...They've shut down running teams. They've shut down more balanced offenses. They intercepted the heck out of passing offenses. Are they as top end talented as '14...no. are they better tested? probably.

Regarding the 14 team, that year they had probably their best passing offense ever. Even though they didn’t need it much it came in handy against better teams. Gave them diversity to loosen up defenses.

Thoughts on Wilmo and CC: CC is CLEARLY the favorite. Bigger, more tested, more experienced, at home...
If Peotone can hold them to 20, I’d think Wilmington is capable of a similar effort.

Wilmington better offense than Peotone. Either RB has potential to take it to the house.

Wilmington will have to play a clean game and maybe get a break here or there, but it’s doable.

Either way it’s a great measuring stick for Wilmington heading into the 3A playoffs.

Hoping for a good clean game and both sides come out healthy.

I’d say Coal City is more battle tested this year so far

The Coalers, without question, are more battle tested than the Wildcats...

I did say in my pick that the Coalers are the boring, logical pick...

But nowhere is it said that the boring logical pick is the one to always take...

These kids have been playing against each other forever...nobody's intimidated...no system surprises...its gonna be a slobberknocker...old fashioned tighten the chinstrap and hit'em as hard as you can...

People don't realize that McWilliams, the senior all-state wingback in '14; was probably the 4th best wing on that team - and he didn't play defense...Zlomie got hurt against Dwight in '13, which forced '15 all-stater Hawkins up as a soph, and they decided to move Zlomie to end. And '16 all-stater Weaver was brought up full time in the middle of '14 - but primarily played linebacker & special teams in 14...

Zlomie, a career wing, was a nightmare for defenses at end. Tackling him one-on-one was nearly impossible. On any given play he could overpower a corner and take it to the house. Teams started having to shade a safety towards him as well to help tackle...which obviously helped the rest of the offense.
