Weekly Review of Rankings for 1/7/25

Week 8 of the Weekly Review. When all of the services have posted their rankings, I'll post a reply indicating that the Review is complete.

PSU's starters haven't wrestled during the past two rankings, so any movement is likely to be the result of how other wrestlers did since the last ranking. Also, a note that The College Wrestling Report tweeted out their rankings this week, but as of 9:15 pm EST on Tuesday, they had not posted them to their web site.

A reminder that: 1) different services treat freshman (RS or True) differently at the beginning of the season, 2) different services rank a differing number of prospects per weight class, and 3) computer generated rankings usually are off a good bit at the beginning of the season.

College Wrestling Report rankings are frequently used here. Of the eight major ranking services, I would not characterize this one as the best. For example, Luke Lilledahl is ranked at number 14 at 125. I know he's a freshman and he doesn't have quality opponent matches yet, but he's a multi-time world champion. You have to consider his entire body of work in wrestling. If you average all the ranking services together he would be ranked at number 9. RealClearPolitics takes all the political polls and puts them together and averages them to get a much more realistic view of what is going on. Wrestling needs to do that

In a week or two, I'll add the Averages to my weekly review. I've been posting the Averages for years. I could start them at any time, but the computer-generated polls frequently just don't have enough data at the start of the season to offer credible rankings, so in recent years I've decided to hold off the Averages until January.
