Welker's Hit on Talib..............thoughts

It won them the game. Forced the Pats into base coverages the rest of the game, and broke a couple of the ribs of NE's best cover guy. It was f*cking dirty, and the gif shows Welker clearly target him.
Pretty weak out of Fox, IMO.

We can sit here and talk about how Richard Sherman is a thug and that Crabtree sucks, Brady sucks, whoever sucks... but I cannot stand Wes Welker. I'm not a Patriots fan so I honestly couldn't give a ****, but this is one of if not the dirtiest plays this year... and between this and all the crap Welker says he's just a 17ing *****. The Patriots decided to go in a different direction. Get over it.
While we're on this subject, here is my issue with the garbage targeting rules that are currently in place. The officials and powers that be in the NFL can keep saying that the rules apply to all players til the end of time, but the fact of the matter is that their intent is CLEARLY to protect offensive players and no one else. It's bogus.
If Talib or any other player in the secondary had hit a receiver like that, it would have been a personal foul along with a severe fine following the game. As we've seen time and time again this year, if you so much as touch a QB on the helmet(intentional or not), it's a flag. However, did anyone notice last week during Kap's interception against Carolina that he chased down the guy, led with his helmet, and then delivered a blow to his head with no flag? I'm a Niners fan and I'm even complaining about this because the way that these targeting calls are currently being managed is a joke. If you want to protect the players, then fine... protect them all. Quit catering to high dollar QBs and receivers, though.

If John Fox actually sent his smallest, most concussion-prone receiver out over the middle to deliberately knock Talib out of the game, then he's an idiot.

Well if welker comes in head first, he gets ribs (unprotected). If any other receiver comes in head first, they hit somewhere protected

I didn't see the hit but Pats don't get alot of missed calls it seems. I remember the hate after the spying incident. Then in the first Super Bowl against Manning the "play" when the tight end made the incredible catch. There were at LEAST three major holds in the line, one on the guy that had ahold of Eli and the hold pulled him off, makes you wonder.

It looked like Welker physically got the worst of the hit, and it just so happened that he got Talib's knee as part of the collision. After watching it several times it actually looks like he's not trying to make contact and they both went the same direction. It actually goes with exactly what he said in the post game, that his job was to try to get Talib to go over the top of him and Talib was determined to go underneath.
It's football, worst case it was close to being a pick play (offensive pass interference) he didn't lead with his helmet, he hit him below the shoulders clean hit. If you want to see one that should have been called go back and look at Edelmens hit on Cromartie, it was far worse then Welkers. Also Talib is about 3-4 inches taller and outweighs Welker by roughly 30 pounds. This is just in another long line of reasons the NFL has gotten soft.
That was a pick. It was horseshit. It would have been one thing if it was an isolated incident, but they do it on almost every play. 8 out of every 10 plays there is a pick where on of their offensive receiver initiates contact with a db to stop him from covering their other receiver. I am not a Pats fan or anything. It was just very obvious Denver's game plan was to set picks timed right before the pass completion. Either legalize it or throw a flag.
They didn't 'both go in same direction'. Talib HAS TO go under Welker there - he has to. He's in trail on a crossing route. If he goes over Welker, he's 10 yards away from him when Thomas makes the catch and Thomas goes for 20, 30, or 50 yards.
Talib has to fight under to stay in Thomas' hip pocket; Welker knows that. When the contact is made, it should have been a flag on Welker. Ironically, I think it gets called if Thomas makes the catch.

It may be pass interference but it is a perfectly designed and executed play when not called. If Welker checks up a little earlier and avoids the contact until the ball touches Thomas then it is 100% perfect (other than throw and catch).
It clearly doesn't look like Welker was trying to hurt him. He was trying to pick him but offenses do it all the time and should. Its a calculated risk/reward.

Its Welker's job to force him high. It's Talib's job to get low and keep the guy covered or draw a pass interference flag.

Never said it wasn't. Reason why I said it was close to a pick play was they didn't throw the flag because Thomas caught the ball (actually dropped it) the same time the hit was made. If the hit was prior to the catch then they should have thrown a flag. But you know as well as I do those picks plays are called maybe once a game. Pass interference rules suck, there's no consistency with them. Should have called one earlier (or at least holding) on the play in the first quarter to the tight end Thomas in the end zone.
