Well, if we continue to fail under Mullen . . .

At least it will be somebody who has done something to make a football name for himself. Herbstreit has Mullen listed #1 at playcalling based on personnel; #5 head coach in waiting. http://sports.espn.go.com...w08/news/story?id=3548678.

As this news is sinking in, I'm sitting here trying to put Byrne's effort in perspective. Outsiders from other BCS schools might see nothing special in Byrne's search. But for MSU . . .

Apparently, Byrne's pool of candidates included Petersen and Wilson. That is arguably a top 5 up and coming head coach, along with a record breaking coordinator. Mullen is running an offense playing for its 2nd title in 2 years. Wow. This search proves to me that we have the right guy leading. He didn't get his first choice, but he evidently made a good run at him. Still not convinced? Compare this hire, nationally to our most recent hires. Felker (who?), Sherrill (good coach, but . . .), and Croom (who knows if he can coach, but he's the first AA SEC head coach). Actually, nationally, the Croom thinking was more like (who cares if he can coach, he's the first AA SEC head coach).

Mullen may fail. But I can't complain about Byrne's efforts and the process that got us a head coach. Let's score some points!

much about the Felker search, do you? State offered the job to several people and got turned down. Finally, they turned to a former Bulldog hero. He was 32 and in over his head, not his fault. Damn shame Rockey couldn't have got a bit more experience before coming here. He might have made a good one.

Please explain.......just curious as to what that means . How could you applaud a guy for hiring a "failure" as a head coach ?

He is one of, if not the top, DC in the country in my opinion, and has ties to here. Would be worth every penny. Can you imagine one of Johnson's defense's with a good offense?

pays a bunch of salaries. EJ is good for that one extra win every year and more than that in most. He`d be worth the money.

As an AD, you can't make a hire that guarantees success. All you can do is go out and hire the best guy possible. I think Byrne got very close. He may turn out to be crap, but win, lose or draw, Greg Byrne did a good job with the search.

when a coached is hired and 5 years down the road he is a bust while a coach/ coaches that may have been available at that time experience success , hypothetically , fans will be calling fo rthe ADs head for not doing what it took to obtain a more successful coach.

He can only work to get good candidates hired so that they can go to work. Take Cohen for instance, great hire. It is still possible that he will be the least successful coach in MSU history. If it turns out that way, you still cannot criticize Byrne for the hire, at the time of the hire. I'm not saying Byrne has nothing at stake, but both Cohen and Mullen are good hires, before they coach a game.
