At least it will be somebody who has done something to make a football name for himself. Herbstreit has Mullen listed #1 at playcalling based on personnel; #5 head coach in waiting. http://sports.espn.go.com...w08/news/story?id=3548678.
As this news is sinking in, I'm sitting here trying to put Byrne's effort in perspective. Outsiders from other BCS schools might see nothing special in Byrne's search. But for MSU . . .
Apparently, Byrne's pool of candidates included Petersen and Wilson. That is arguably a top 5 up and coming head coach, along with a record breaking coordinator. Mullen is running an offense playing for its 2nd title in 2 years. Wow. This search proves to me that we have the right guy leading. He didn't get his first choice, but he evidently made a good run at him. Still not convinced? Compare this hire, nationally to our most recent hires. Felker (who?), Sherrill (good coach, but . . .), and Croom (who knows if he can coach, but he's the first AA SEC head coach). Actually, nationally, the Croom thinking was more like (who cares if he can coach, he's the first AA SEC head coach).
Mullen may fail. But I can't complain about Byrne's efforts and the process that got us a head coach. Let's score some points!
