@matthewcstevens: Unfortunately, I was terminated from The Commercial Dispatch. I accept this as a consequence for my comments & I’ll always be remorseful.

Okay, so 'who' is Stevens backup? ... looks like we may have to break in another beat writer.

So he talks trash about MSU its ok but you better not say anything about ULL.

I thought the guy should have been fired after accusing Redmond for receiving a car. At least ULL did something for us.

Said many disparaging remarks about Lafayette and what got him fired the people of Lafayette on BSR. He has apologized to every on over and over and knows he was wrong but can't take back what was said.

The worst thing he even said

was that cajun should be taught as a second language. I have to believe that all of the (likely inconprehensible) complaint calls the Dispatch got were actually mad about HD6's comments, not Stevens's.

I could understanding a suspension or repremand but firing him over it seemed a little much to me. I guess it's the society we live in today.

I thought perhaps what he said was a little over the top (especially the missing link comments... Even though he didnt say it, he sure didn't pull back the reigns)... But I think a suspension or public "punishment" was warranted. I'm not sure firing him was necessary unless there were other issues perhaps that weren't public knowledge. It was still quite classless of him to say.

Timing see strange to me. Didn't this happen last week - did they need the weekend to figure it out? Seems like there must have been some new developments.

What a douchebag

I've got no problem with the firing. He's supposed to be a professional journalist and he goes off ranting like a Paul Finebaum Show caller. Makes the entire newspaper look bad. Also find it interesting that we're so sensitive about people talking bad about Starkville and MSU fans but have no problem ripping other places and people.

I seriously doubt he would have been fired if he had been a good journalist otherwise. Offending an out of state fan base generally won't get you fired if it's a first offense.

I hate to see anybody get fired............

no matter how much I may dislike them. There's always collateral damage. I don't know anything about Stevens. He may have a kid for all I know. I'm sure he has rent and utilities and a phone bill and so forth.

Any of us could find ourselves in a bad situation.

I'm not a huge fan of it, but that's ridiculous. He said nothing that was worthy of firing.

I am just shocked they fired him. I didn't really like him but damn - he didn't do anything wrong. He commented on how he didn't like Lafayette.

These days, it doesn't matter what you do. It's all about what you say. Can't hurt anybody's feelings.

This had to be just a convenient excuse to fire someone they already wanted to fire. There are worse things said by sports journalists on the radio every day across the country.

I've

always (somewhat) enjoyed his baseball info. Everything else, not so much. As has been suggested, I think what got him fired was a number of offenses.

For one, he was always acted like a child on Twitter. He would continously get in "internet fights" with kids (and adults). He has to realize that that type of behavior wasn't exactly attractive for someone in his spot.

He came off as someone that was extremely self-conscious.

The irony is that due to these comments, he was probably the only writer for the Commercial Dispatch with any notoriety. And it is not like those comments on Lafayette would hurt advertising or readership. It's a bit of head scratcher from a business perspective, unless as suggested above, he was soon to go anyway.

Its funny to me...

That so many reporters write negative and, often times, insulting comments about Starkville or MSU and nothing...NOTHING is done. I'm talking local/regional guys. But this guy says something negative about another school and he is fired. Whatever.

He is gone.

Period.

End of discussion.

If I had to guess, it was the "Missing Link" comment in reference to the Cajun people that got him canned.

You won't get fired for running down a town, but if you make a comment about the people that could in any way be construed as including racial or cultural bigotry, you are in a danger zone.

Like it or not, that's the world we live in, and calling a group of people (Cajuns) the "Missing Link" will get you every time.

Damn. Full Court Press 2 on BSR was really good mobile radio. (I'm assuming it ends, unless he gets on with another local rag).

Agreed. It was far and away the second best program on BSR.

I do have faith in Hadad to fill the void, the amount and quality of programming since he took over has increased tremendously.

Speaking of BSR, what hapened to the Rivals/247 show? I heard HD6 and Robbie Faulk talking last week and HD6 told RF at one point that you had a show on this network and are welcome to come back any time. RF joked that Paul was moody (or something). What happened to that show?

I do feel totally responsible.

You may have seen Robbie saying that he was leaving Rivals, that's why the show ended. Now that's he sticking around, I would like to get him back in a full time capacity. If he's open to it, he's welcome back whenever he likes.

While you're at it, could you so kindly tell Steve to not make so many gross sounds and to put his phone on silent while recording?

My only exposure to him was Full Court Press, and I thought he was a very fair host. I don't get all the hate.

He was a giant condescending dbag to his cohost. I listened to it 2, maybe 3 times and it's all I could take from him. I'd almost rather listen to bo bounds.
ETA: he was not a good representation of what you get on bsr. I listen to both shows hadad does, recruiting shows and others when driving and they are all pretty good.

I think Joel deserves a lot of the comments. He's Mr. Sunshine pumper and Stevens adds a realistic balance to the show. I welcome fair destructive criticism. This site was basically founded on it.

And BSR has a really great product. I regularly listen to B&B, TIOS, & FCP. All are great. I hate that Stevens will be leaving.

Cultural bigotry? Holy crap. The ENTIRE southeastern half of the US is bashed constantly on TV, movies, talk shows, radio shows, etc. If it was cultural bigotry against Cajuns that was the primary reason for canning the guy, then the upper management has lost their minds.

Good thing Adam Sandler is funny. His Water Boy character must have really pushed south Louisiana people over the edge: a mentally handicapped Cajun boy who lives with Momma and a horse in a swamp, eats baby gators on the grill, wets his bed, married a tramp who just got out of prison, played football for drunk Cajun cheerleaders and an assistant coach that not one person could understand, his college teammates admittedly couldn't have passed a GED test, and he has a daddy with a lisp named Roberto in New Orleans with a big ol crossed eye. Wait... That was for entertainment, much like sports radio shows.
