I don't know why we even care. <div>
</div><div>We have one of the best coaches in the country, some of the best young talent in the country, and what happens? We get half of them injured, then play a Top 10 team close with one of the best performances in program history, and lose.</div>

No one we'd rather have on the mound and he blew it with the double and WP.

Both teams with a lot of pitching left for the rest of the weekend. Should be a tight series.

we don't have one of the best coaches in the country and we don't have some of the best young talent in the country. I wish we did, but we just don't.

We're probably the 3rd most talented team in the state Mississippi right now. We just need to try to steal a few games until we're back healthy.

We won't be winning many SEC series this year.

Almost everyone on here has given him a complete pass for four years. I know the program sucked when he took over but we're four years in and are still wobbling along in the middle of the pack. Cohen is supposed to be this great hitting coach, but we can't hit. And before anyone uses the injury excuse, we couldn't hit before we had the injuries. So when does the free pass end for Cohen?

But the problem is by the time those guys return....we may end up being a better team in late April....but by then, it may ("may") be too late. I hope these young pups can eek out a few wins to at least keep us respectable and maybe even stay close to .500 ball in SEC play.... Then we might have a chance when the injured get back.

giving Cohen a pass and saying he hasn't done anything. The answer is in the middle, as usual, and that's where most posters are saying we probably are. We need to be winning games and series, period. But that doesn't mean that losing 4 starters right before the start of SEC play doesn't have a significant effect on the lineup.

If Cohen doesn't get the team competitive soon, is there any doubt that he should (or would) be canned? Who's denying that?

We have elite young talent, no matter what a few uninformed posters on this board think. Had we not had the injuries we were a regional team this year, maybe more. It's just unfortunate. I hate it for Cohen, but he knows there are many idiots out there. He won't get discouraged. <div>
</div><div>Even if Stratton goes pro (which he will if he continues to perform like he did tonight), we still have a host of pitchers coming back. Couple that with our freshmen and sophomores in the field and we have a national championship caliber team. You may also look at Norris' injury as a blessing in disguise.....he would have been eligible for the draft this year....now maybe he'll stay another year.</div>

I'm tired of just slipping into regionals as the 3 seed. Polk did that for almost his entire second tenure here. We haven't hosted a regional since 2003. That is just inexcusable with as much tradition and fan support as we have. I was all for the hiring of Cohen, but I am getting discouraged very quickly with the lack of results we are seeing on the field. A few years ago we could hit but couldn't pitch. Now we can pitch and can't hit. Since it seems like this year is slipping away quickly, we'd better be top 20 good next year or Cohen's seat better get extremely hot.

Cohen's brought in some real nice recruits the last couple of years. Just don't have the depth to replace 4 starters. Life sucks sometimes.

Cohen has had two winning SEC records in his tenure as a head coach (including UK),he has a career SEC winning % of around .380 (that's an average of losing 2 out of 3 every weekend), and has only won two SEC series again teams that went on to make the NCAA tournament (South Carolina and Ole Miss in 2009) since he's been at State. And let's be fair regarding last year, there's no doubt the team was talented, experienced with strong leadership and got hot at the end, but as close as they were to Omaha, it also took a walk off win against LSU in the last series just to make the SEC tourney and keep the season alive. So what's my point? Quit judging a coach based on what he did in '06 with UK and look at his whole body of work. Also look at the non conference schedule he plays to try to offset the lack of SEC wins.<div>
<div>So, what kind of coach is he? He's a very knowledgeable one that has had a tough time getting players at State to buy into his system. He constantly tinkers with hitter's stances and approaches and can ruin a kid's confidence with the best of them. His philosophy is to get guys on base by walks, errors and HBP's. Some what of an Oakland A's money ball approach that has yet to pan out. Will it ever? Time will tell. And finally, everyone wants to say he took over a bad program. He took over a neglected one but not necessarily a bad one. He was hired less than a year after the 2007 team was in Omaha. If Croom had gone to an BCS game instead of the Liberty Bowl the year before he was fired, would we not be looking at the football program differently when Mullen took over? I hope that you will judge the program from facts rather than emotions.</div> </div>

1. Cohen took over a program that had the fewest top 10 round draft in the SEC in the 5 years before he was hired.

2. Cohen took over a program that the previous head coach hadnt left campus for the last 2 years to recruit

3. Cohen took over a program that had 2 commitments by recruits when he got the job in June

Who gives a **** what our SEC record is? We havent won the SEC since 1989. We havent won the West since the 1990's

When did getting hot in May become a bad thing? Isnt that when you want your team playing it's best- at the end when it counts most?

We went H2H with LSU tonight with a brand new team position player-wise from last season- plus injuries to 3 of our best players- and lost because our AA closer blew the save.

There is your facts for ya

If this one is still true then we have more problems than I thought:

He's a very knowledgeable one that has had a tough time getting players at State to buy into his system.

I couldn't tell you the first thing about what Cohen did in '06, but we were 6 outs from CWS last year whether you want to admit it or not. That's not "good enough" long term, but it's not chump change. The Croom comparisons are complete garbage across two very different sports. 7-5 in football is nothing compared to a Super in baseball.

To what emotions are you even referring? The original post said "wow, that sucked," which is quite factual.

How far removed was Polk from an actual CWS game when he was removed? Maybe a year or so?

And you have a hard on for Cohen because he got so close?

I like to dick with you because your ego makes you aneasy target. Let's agree with something. Polk > Cohen. Agree?

and then got pissed because LT didnt have the power to make that happen.

We have a very young team position player-wise and then add injuries to that- but when we go H2H with LSU and their 1st round draft pick- our closer needs to do his job

rather than looking at who he's beaten over how many seasons...and I'm happy to admit that they were extremely close to Omaha. That would have been huge for us.<div>
</div><div>Coach, valid points but Polk had signed Devin Jones, Nick Routt, Caleb Reed, Tyler Johnson, David Hayes, Frank Rawdow and maybe one more. No doubt it was thin but the first three have been pretty good. However, you can't win on three solid recruits per class so I can partially concede that point. And look at last year's team and you'll still see several Polk guys contributing (Collins, Brownlee, Reed, Jones, Routt, Freeman, etc..) As far as recruiting goes, please keep in mind that Burroughs and Thompson are the one's going out and bringing this talent in. Cohen just fills in the gaps to make the families comfortable to send their kid to State.</div><div>
</div><div>However, you also said SEC wins don't matter but want to bring the draft into it like that always translates into winning? Vandy has led the league in top 10 round draft picks for a while now (had 5 first round or eventual first round draft picks from the 2007 team) and never made it out of a regional until last year...There's facts to both sides.</div>

Elsewhere yousaid: "We havent won the SEC since 1989 in baseball- but we have more NCAA success...I'll take that anyday"

You have more NCAA success? Wasn't Polk one year removed from the CWS when he was replaced by Cohen. That is the standard, isn't it? The CWS? One year removed. Hmm.

How do you think Cohen will compare with Polk when the it's all said and done? </p>

No team in the country can lose FIVE starters and not feel it. 5 starters in baseball is 20% of the 25-man roster. In football, that works out to losing 17 players from the 85-man roster. To translate that, you'd have to lose all but 5 of your 22 starters. aGAIN, there isn't a single team in America that can lose that many quality players and keep going. Further, the position guys we lost were our most experienced players - Brownlee, CT, Norris, Stark. It's also our entire starting outfield and starting 3B. Name one team in the country that can lose 20% of their roster, specifically their entire starting outfield & starting 3B, and keep winning and I'll tell you who's going to win the CWS that year. No one has the depth to replace that number of injuries.

Now, with that said, should Cohen get a pass? No. But you'd also be a fool if you didn't consider the injuries when evaluating our performance. We'll get CT back next week, which should help. He'll gives us a boost on D and the dynamic leadoff hitter we're missing right now. Hopefully we can move Demarcus to the IF when CT gets back next week to replace Britton. If we do that, I still like our chances. We've just got to weather the storm until Bracewell & Norris can come back. I think we need to take last year's approach: "Don't get swept." If we can do that, and win our home series, we should be right in the thick of things at the end. And that's really all I was asking for this season anyway with so much inexperience in the lineup.

But they would never run into as many outs as we do.

I want us to have a more prototypical strikeout closer. I've just never been a fan of pitch to contact closers. I was hoping Bracewell could fill that role this season, but we're apparently hellbent on him being a starter. If he does step up in that role, I'd like to see Evan Mitchell get a shot at closing. Kid brings serious heat and can rack up some Ks. Butch said he wouldn't be surprised if Mitchell is hitting 97-98 at some point this season. That would also give us the flexibility to use Reed "as needed," which is where his real value is, at least to me.

We are 14-7. We lost one GD game and the season is slipping away? Tonight, despite 4 major injuries, we hung with a top 10 team and only lost because we blew it. If we're 2-7 in the SEC in a few weeks, then yeah, it's slipping away. Can't make that call when we're 0-1.<div>
</div><div>We may not have a winning SEC record, which sucks, but anyone who thinks we won't make the NCAA Tournament just doesn't know much about college baseball.</div>

Dubs brought good stuff...maybe with an exception on the croom comparison. This is year 4 and its starting to sound a little like an Obama excuse tour still blaming Bush. 17 having to sweat out whether or not we get into the SEC tourney. I'm over that ****. Strick needs to tell Cohen to either start playing .500 ball are take a pay cut.
