West Columbus is in an odd part of the state. Even though they have a border that's 15 miles from the beach, they are still further west than Raleigh is. Even though they are pretty much on the beach, the shape of the state has a large portion of it further east than them. But to consider them a western team is still a stretch to me. What say you?

I mean they're in the eastern part of the state, but sometimes there is no choice but to send them into the western playoffs.

Yeah, Swain had to travel to Whiteville a few years ago in the 1AA “West” playoffs. That would make for a long bus ride...

North Duplin played in the western bracket recently. I'll let you look up their location. Completely illogical. Reidsville, to me, is clear west, but seem to flip sides every few years. Are there any obviously western schools that play in the east regularly?

North Duplin represented the west in the state championship in 2007 and played for the western championship in 2006 as well.

East Columbus played in the West playoffs in 2012 and lost to Albemarle by one point. East Columbus scored a touchdown in 4th quarter which put them up by 1 point...then kicked the extra point to go up by 2 pts...albemarle kicked field goal to beat them by 1 point. Never understood why east Columbus didn't go for 2. Game would have gone to overtime if they would have converted. Also Alleghany blew out west Columbus in 2014 playoffs 2nd round 63 to 6 on the way to final 4.

One of those Columbus teams played Elkin in 06 and then again in like 14 I think. Elkin went through the 2006 playoffs without playing a single western team. It was whichever Colmbus team, Lakewood I think, Hobbton, and North Duplin in route to playing Manteo in Chapel Hill.

Every single time I see West Columbus in the Western Bracket, I pull up google maps... I just can’t keep it in my head... but every single time I’ve checked, they’ve indeed been further west than any of the east bracket teams.

I like to go to simmonsratings.com to check the longitude for each of the NCHSAA member schools too. It’s an odd shaped state for sure!

Just isn't a good way to do it with the population density across North Carolina. 1A teams can literally be found in every part of the state now even the metro areas thanks to charters. 2A are probably the most evenly spread out. 3A and 4A are concentrated in metro areas which a few random county schools.
