The Stanly News and Press is reporting that James Johnson has resigned as the head football coach at West Stanly High School. He leaves after two years, and seemed to have the Colts headed in the right direction in a tough conference.

Any thoughts on who's next?

Kind of what you expect when small schools with weak football programs hire assistants from very successful large high schools. Principals see applicants from schools like Rich Co, Butler, Pinecrest, etc and their eyes light up. These guys, who are good coaches, quickly become frustrated and overwhelmed when they have to do everything in the program. Huge difference between being a position coach in a major program and having to wash, mow & paint the field, fund raise, run the scout team, monitor grades, deal with delusional parents, etc. Then you get some moron board member cut the supplements & suggest the county do away with paid faculty coaches altogether. Totally different profession!! I would imagine the stress level on Johnson has been lowered tremendously!!

West Stanly will be lucky to win more than 3 games next year. I see the Colts at the bottom of the RRC with only a slim chance of beating Central Academy or Parkwood. The only gimme game on the schedule is South Stanly while the Colts are probably even money with North Stanly.

Also if the board does what they want an closes Albemarle an South Stanly, West Stanly already a large 2A will become a mid sized to large 3A if not a small 4A an that will hurt there performance in any sport but the athletes they get from Albemarle an South Stanly may help but how much is the question

West has really only been competitive in baseball and girls softball for several years. They are a large 2A school now and couldn't even field a JV football team last year.

I don't know why everyone thinks West Stanly is a large 2A school. The ADM reported in October was 822, which is very average for a 2A school. For comparison, Parkwood was 999, Forest Hills was 934, Central Academy was 803, Monroe was 1,000, and Mount Pleasant was 831.

For the record, Mount Pleasant played in the 2A and not the 2AA playoffs.

West Stanly has seen their ADM plummet over the last 10 years. Once a school that was close to 3A levels, it is now a school that is average-sized at best.
