Again......never said ANYONE was too lazy. I'm all for retraining.....but we need the business commitments so we have jobs for those being trained.

This would be what the democrats would call job retraining in WV. They would spend billions to train WV coal miners to grow pineapples on our mountain sides knowing full well that you can't grow them in WV.[sick]

If everyone thought like you think, there would be no environmental laws and all humans (and much of nature) would be at great risk from polluted air, water and soil while we're busy burning up the cheapest fossils fuels available. Sometimes government has to step in to help us do what is best for ourselves right now and for future generations.

I would also say that the courts are places to rectify some of these abuses.

You do not know what I think just because I said govt has no place in picking winners and losers. I think business should be responsible and not dump toxic chemicals into our water or into the ground. I think that coal burning electrical plants should strive to scrub the smoke to eliminate toxins. I do not believe the govt should ever say, we are going tomake it too expensive for you to build a coal plant. That would be like conservatives getting into power and saying that we are going to make it too expensive for liberals to drive their prius by charging you twice as much in taxes and increasing the cost of the Prius by double for being so stupid as to by a coffin to drive on the open road.[winking]
Did you raise hell when the Fed mandated that ethanol be added to gasoline? or when CAFE standards were raised? or when asbestos and DDT were outlawed? or when lead was taken out of gasoline? There were losers with every one of those actions.

Don't we also need an investment in education and workforce to invite new business. Hard to sell anything with city leaders refusing to even meet with anyone that thinks different from them.
That is brilliant, but do you want to be a little more specific. What are the jobs that we should educate ourselves to do. Engineers, business, or is this a good time for the "underwater basket weaving" that we hear about on college campuses. History, political science that make wonderful avenues into Law. We don't have enough lawyers in Mingo County. Know CPA's who are doing payroll to make income. Engineers who are drafting. Got a grandson who wants to get a PhD in Greek Mythology..

Medical profession? I mentioned the reduction of 200+ students attending Gilbert Elementary School. Two parents for each gives 400 people who are available. How many nurses does Gilbert need? Most who have that degree now are having to go outside to find employment.

What were the other suggestions. There is a small town that has never had collective heads in the sand regarding industry outside coal industry. You are simply wrong with your commentary and have been for quiet some time. Most who are disrupted now have a variety of skills and are as good of employees as any this side the Miss. River. They need some help if you have anything resembling a reasonable thought to offer.

From the governor....I wish him well on this one.

1. Ethanol should not be in gasoline. Bush did it for the corn lobby. Ridiculous.
2.Let people buy what they want. Let the car companies build what the people want to buy. The more gas that is sold, the more money for roads. Except the politicians who spend it on things it wasn't meant for. see previous comments about govt's screwed up preferences.
3. I believe that there are now some unintended ramifications from the outlawed DDT use.
4. No reason to continue to use asbestos.

Actually ethanol probably created some jobs. Think of all those small engine tools that were fuked up because of ethanol and had to be replaced.

All of you brilliant people who want the alternate jobs, here is your chance. Gary has found a way for a site that would accommodate nearly any industry that the mind can imagine. Remember Hillary's billions. People, this is the best opportunity I have heard for the Southern counties. The highway system is available toward Charleston and it would certainly hasten I-73 to the South.

Even the dumb assed people could get started here. All you need is a plan and many different sources of Federal money would be available for start-up. I thought this was BS when I first started reading, but it is doable. I have been reading of alternatives to coal for 50 years. This is the opportunity for all those who have made the "alternate" cry. What do you have to offer now that the highway has been built to your dream industry?

If you can not come up with viable plans to utilize this, it will be like the good man said for that part of the state. "Turn out the light, the party's over".

Now, who will be the first to come up with a wave maker so we can develop a serf-board business?

Amazing. I say absolutely ***** amazing. We have unlimited geniuses who want to expand WV beyond a coal industry. The Gov and a real mover and shaker offers a venue that would allow those demanding expansion of industries a chance to put pen to paper and share those brilliant new industries. Amazing how quiet it got. Absolutely ***** cricket sounds quiet.

I honestly cannot tell who has blocked me, but do appreciate the peace from the liberal bastards. Can you not figure out how it works? Definitely glad that those ******** from PARKERSBURG have quit attempting to relate how they are so superior to everyone who posts. That cuntryboy is just plain stupid. And the White fellow is just too damned hard a target to converse with. He never settles on the topic being discussed until his leader directs him. As time goes on, he will end up attempting to steal your position as his in most discussions. The first thing he attempts is to enter by calling names in an attempt to disarm or change the discussion. These guys are not even entertaining.

And you are very good. Your method is to tell people they are wrong without elaborating and go away for a week or two. You just take too many firm stances that you cannot verbally defend. Then you go on sabbatical rather than face "hot seat" when you are asked how you defend your position.

If you disagree, refer to what you have offered here. You will never offer anything concrete as alternative to coal mining. But you are quick to criticize those in the industry who lose jobs. You always offer quick solution of an alternative, but you have nothing to offer when asked to expand on the alternative is that you suggest. Your quick fix to world problems would be solved in your world with simple "alternative" but never offer explanation. You are a fraud.

The only candidate that I have lashed out at is the dumbass that said businesses don't create jobs. I also have listened to what Jim Justice has said about making WV a destination for tourism and developing the proper business climate for our state.

I've always wondered why WV has dropped the ball here. I go to the NC or TN mountains, and I see beauty and commerce because they've attracted people to the area with nice cabins, things to do. WV is so much more beautiful, and nothing like the sort.

Are there loaded coal trucks running past those nice cabins?

The answer is simple........the WV Democrat leaders were getting their pockets stuffed for years and years.

I feel sorry for the people of southern WV. They're so stupid they can't help themselves. They've been duped into believing lies that corporate America feeds them. They aren't smart enough to figure out that the coal barons only care about money and don't give a damn about them and their safety. They are blaming Hillary (not smart enough to spell her name correctly) for the demise of coal when she isn't even in the White House or a member of congress. They aren't smart enough to figure out the abundance and low cost of natural gas has killed coal.

There was video on the local news of coal miners shaking Blankenship's hand and taking pictures with him like he was some god...while he was responsible for killing 29 of them.

I don't think I've seen more than a dozen coal trucks in Pocahontas County, where I would start.

Spent the weekend in Blowing Rock, NC, which was beautiful, but not WV beautiful. Most of their downtown roads are tore up with (expansion) construction, and construction equipment. Noone cared.

I agree, they are dumb as rocks, look what years and years of voting for Democrats has done for them. After looking at Moe's post I'm not sure that coal is dead.

Yes........look at where WV ranks in any measure of quality of life measurements. Did you just wake up from a coma?

Looks like coal really boomed under the Clintons. Glad we're shutting them out this time around [laughing]
I really believe Clinton was in office in '93. It was too deep for small operations to survive. Get what you can and get the hell out. Toward end of first term, he was convinced to move a little to middle. Most of second term was pretty good. Of course the Tech Bubble burst on his way out and some got *** kicked around a bit.

If coal is in such decline because of the free market, then why is it necessary for the EPA to implement rules to effect the coal industry?
Making it hard to resume operations if the fundamentals were to change? Appeasing the stupid liberal base? You'd need to ask them, but that is not evidence that the market hasn't crashed WV coal.

I don't disagree that the market has had a huge impact on coal but I also believe that the EPA has contributed as well.

On the other hand, you cannot correctly assume that EPA did not impact the demand. Regulations had a hell of an impact on cost.

Contributed? Sure, however nothing near what many in WV (and in this thread) seem to believe. Market fundamentals are killing coal. I think the EPA makes for a good scapegoat by the Coal Corp.s

I actually do think some of the EPA's rules would hamper the start of a new coal boom, but the 10 year outlook doesn't look too good for that market. We have other things to worry about.
