The new EPA emission standards didn't go into effect until 2014. Look at the graph above and tell me with a straight face that the EPA is to blame for the decline of coal. Furthermore, Clean Air Act Amendments went into effect in 1990 and the coal market went down after that but fully recovered. Anyone that believes the EPA is to blame is either uninformed or is genuinely trying to mislead people.
I'm not sure of exactly when; I think within the next 60 days. I was thinking like you, but maybe, the only reason one of those families hasn't taken him out yet is that they are waiting for civil trials. He'll probably declare bankruptcy and hide his money if they bring a civil suit against him.

The graph shows a sharp decline starting in 2009. The plan to kill coal was designed to begin way before the full effect of the EPA emission standards in 2014. The EPA's regional haze rule, MATS rule & clean power plan all hurt coal some not going into full effect until 2014 but other hurtful policies which began at the beginning of Obamas tenure.

You mean to tell me my supplier of electricity was being dishonest when they added a surcharge to my monthly bills to cover a, non-existent increase in their cost . I do not believe the state regulators would have allowed them to pass that increase, that you say did not exist, on to the customers.
I am reasonably certain all the customers would be entitled to a rebate and Duke will be assessed a substantial penalty. I have faith in the accounting profession to uncover such deceit via annual audit. The utility is charged with verification of all increases passed on to consumer.
The only changes in 2009 were the ones to the standards for SO2 emissions that were released in Nov 2009. I doubt that a regulation that impacted SO2 emissions at the end of the year was significantly responsible for the drop in production. If you plot the price of natural gas against that same timeline of coal production, you'll see a sharp drop in the price of natural gas occurring at the same time (2009). I think you could easily argue that cheap natural gas had at least as much impact on coal production as anything else. That's the free market at work.

Sure, the politicians didn't do the state any favors by failin to diversify. Sure, some coal Operators were **** heads. Sure, they ravage the beauty of the state during operations. They employed and provided which is a hell of lot more than our Gov't has done for them in the last 7.5 years.
While other factors have indeed contributed, the DNC's green movement has been a major driver as well. They are as complicit into the decline of coal, the forcing of 1000s of families into squalor, and now they try to act like the ends justify the means and even have the audacity to convolute the situation by somehow trying to blame he industry itself. All the while, it was their agenda which contributed to its demise.

It is amazing that a vast number of people in our free country thinks government provides jobs. Yes, loosely stated, some jobs are created by government. But the payroll for government work is not perpetuated by the product that is produced by govenment. Only industry produces a product that can be consumed by paying customers that produces more payroll to produce a product of service and a system that perpetuates itself. Government could not survive without industry to pay the bills. Government would have to close without industry. Industry perpetuates itself in a cycle and can survive without government.
Unfortunately liberals want an ever-enlarging government to provide for them. In the long term, government of growing consumption cannot survive in realistic terms. Even in governments that are socialist(government run industry) will not prosper. They can not keep up with changing market systems. They control supply, but not demand for any standard of living beyond subsistence.

We have already clearly shown in this thread that the decline in WV coal production is not lining up with the timing of the implementation of changes in regulations.

Actually was an oversupply. When world economy struggled, so did the China demand for coal. WV has a better quality of coal and can charge more per ton. Western coal is poorer quality and can be mined cheaper. WV demand decreased and Western increased. During better times, WV coal(better grade) will be in greater demand during better economic times. It burns hotter and cleaner.
